Next stop…Fakarava…and don’t worry if you have never heard of that atoll before reading this blog…Rangiroa…Fakarava…these are the Louboutin and the Jimmy Choo of the diving world….and if you are lost here, it’s ok, since when divers know about beautiful stilettos! So 45 minutes little hop to Rangiroa, and here I am in Fakarava. This time staying at Marama pension, managed by Jacques. This place is a small world, I’ve been bumping in the same people over the last few days…that said…there are those in the know…and those who are not. Find out today that some people did get charged a huge premium on what I get charged….for diving…for lodging…who say we are all equal in this world…in the Tuamotus…here it’s all about…contacts...good level diving…and speak French…good luck fo... read more

Geo: -17.52, -149.56Sunday is a non-event in Papeete. Very few places are open as most people, women dressed in blinding white dresses, go to church. So it was another rest day for us. At lunch time we ventured out to find an ATM and had lunch at one of the few restaurants open, Le Retro. I had a ham and goat's cheese salad which mainly consisted of fruit (pineapple, mandarins, pawpaw) surrounding a stack of lettuce tied around with prosciutto and then deep fried goat's cheese balls dotted among the fruit. Very delicious. We spent the afternoon again reading, updating blog etc and at 5-30 Bob Snow came to our room for a predinner drink and then we walked to Le Mandarin Chinese restaurant which Fletcher and I had spotted during our walk. Geo: -17.52, -149.56Friday was a rest day for us. After so much activity we needed a break especially as those famous shonky knees were rather bad. So I slept in and we spent the morning reading and updating the blog for me and ranking lists for Fletcher. At lunch time we ventured out to find sustenance and walked (or in Fletcher's case) limped to Les Trois Brasseurs, a micro-brewery and cafe just down the street a little. There we had a Tarte Flambe each and spent a pleasant hour or two watching the world go by and sampling the brew. We then walked to Avis and organised a car for tomorrow an one for Monday on Moorea. After an indolent afternoon we returned to La Villa for dinner. This time there were 21 of our group there and ... read more

I know, some of you have read my last post less than 10 days ago...in South Africa...and what now...Rangiroa...oh yes, and I'm sorry to have to admit it, I enjoy it tremendously! So after a week home, I took few more flights, from Buenos Aires to Rangiroa. And it's only the third time over the last few years that I spent my night "camping" in Papeete airport. I landed just after 1am, and my next flight was at 10am...not the best 9 hours you can dream of, but even by night time, it's a cool 24 degrees around in the open-air airport! I have to admit, you won't see any images of Bora Bora this time...don't worry, I went twice to Bora Bora...the first time I was not a diver and on a short round-the-world ... read more

Geo: -17.5327, -149.838Today the local organising committee had arranged for officials to have a day trip to Moorea, an island about 30 minutes by ferry from Tahiti. This is a volcanic island with majestic green peaks rising sharply skywards. We walked to the Ferry Terminal and departed at 9-15am. The ferry was a large one with comfortable seats and a capacity for vehicles as well. The trip over was fairly smooth and we had a quiche each for breakfast on board. On arrival there were two buses waiting for us and they took us first to a Viewpoint overlooking the Sofitel Resort. The sandy white beach was beautiful and the bures stood over the shallow water of the lagoon. Stunning. We then continued along the coast around two bays in which Cook had first anchored in 1777. ... read more

Geo: -17.52, -149.56The Championships started on Monday but not until 3pm. Fletcher and I went for a walk along the waterfront and to the market in the morning. The harbour is interesting with many different boats of all shapes and sizes. It was different to see the roller shutters up and the shops offering their wares. The big focus here is on Tahitian pearls. These are cultivated black pearls, very beautiful but also expensive. The market had a variety of tourist wares, fruits and vegetables as well as fresh fish. The Athletics has been fun but busy. On Monday I had to take the warm-up for the Pole Vault by myself as the rest of the team were finishing a Long Jump. This involved looking after 7 athletes, finding their foot position, catching poles, all the ... read more

Geo: -17.52, -149.56 The third and final day of competition did not begin well. It had been announced last night that all officials were to be at the track at 8am. So I dutifully had the alarm on for 6-30 and reluctantly dragged myself down to catch the 7-30 bus. There were only four of us on it! Most of the others waited for the 8am one and then we also discovered that the first jumps event was not on until 11am. Fletcher had waited for the second bus too. Today I officiated on the Girl's U/18 Triple Jump, then the Decathlon Pole Vault and finally the Open Men's TJ. This was three in a row under very sunny skies and high humidity. However, today belonged to Fletcher. While we were overseas he had an email which informed ... read more

Geo: -17.52, -149.56We left Adelaide on Saturday, June 1st anticipating a long 2 days of being in transit. We first flew to Melbourne and then had a four hour wait, fortunately in the Qantas Business Lounge. Here we had a sit down meal of Chicken Laksa washed down by a very nice Tasmanian Sauv Blanc. We then had a three hour flight to Auckland. With changes in time zones we arrived at Auckland airport at 10-45pm. I had booked an airport hotel on-line so a quick phone call and their shuttle was there in 10 minutes. An overnight stay was all that was needed. The next morning the shuttle took us back to Auckland Airport and we were able to check in for our Air Tahiti flight at 11-00am even though it wasn't leaving until 5-20pm. The last days on our last island we spoiled ourselves with a stay at one of the famous overwater bungalows. We had seen them on all the islands: built directly into the water on stilts, these bungalows promise the ultimate paradises experience. From the spacious room (or rooms, depending on the budget) you see the ocean and nothing but the ocean. Same from your sofa. And from the bed. And the bathroom. And from, well, you get the concept. In front of the bungalow you have your private sun deck and your own little pier to jump into the water whenever you like. If you're lucky you even have your own little part of the reef. On Bora Bora there were so many overwater bungalows that there was nothing romantic or special over it any more ... read more

On they way back from our last two dives on this trip (we made 13 in total) we saw a shallow place in the lagoon with some boats and people in the water. We found out it was a place where they feed the stingrays. On Bora Bora we made two dives where mantarays could be seen. The only island that we visited with mantarays. Unfortunately we never saw any of them. We had seen stingrays a couple of times earlier but never close up, so we quickly agreed we got to do this. The next morning we checked with the hotel and guess what? They offered jet ski tours to the site! Twenty minutes later we were on our way out. The rays were very used to getting fed at this site so they came ... read more
