In a nutshell, there is no cheap way of doing French Polynesia. My trip through Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea and Rangiroa was an expensive exercise - but it is worth it. There are no hawkers, taxi drivers dont hassle you because they make a lot of money from cruise ship tourists on tours so I found hitching very possible and a great experience meeting lots of people who turned out to become friends. Everything except two things are expensive - cigarettes and tattoos, both of which I am fond of. Diving is spectacular and you pay Australian rates for your dives but you can find pensions on the smaller islands like Rangiroa for $60 a night with breakfast and dinner included. A lunch and water will set you back $12 - $30 at even a simple ... read more

I woke up and had a consult with the hotel security and conceirge about last nights problem with the drunken wanna be rapist who I imagine is still nursing sore balls and deservedly so and decided to not let that spoil things. Im a pretty brave person. I try and remain upbeat and decided what happened couldve been a lot lot worse and to give Moorea a go. I had spent half the night wondering about changing plans and trying to get a flight to Fakarava but security put extra watch on the rear of the property and on me. I wandered up to Caramelline Creperie to have the most divine breakfast and decided to go and find my tattooist and work through a design with him, have a dive and take a little bit of ... read more

When I saw all the cruise shippers loading into mini vans heading for the ferry to Moorea I realised i had best get moving if I was going to avoid spending another expensive night on Tahiti. The Armenti ferrys are huge, cargo and cars go across to Moorea fully loaded on a lovely 30 minute trip across the Sea of the Moon. Everything that cant be grown or caught on Moorea must be ferried across and the Armentis are excellent ferrys....on days when there are not 8000 cruise shippers headed there. I missed the first ferry when I got to the dock, sold out and about to leave, but another would go in an hour so I grabbed a ticket and a cold drink while i was waiting. The system is pretty straight forward, you throw ... read more

After the dramas of yesterday we had to see the Gendarmes about the dive incident but as I didnt speak french and the Gendarme did that oxymoron thing and said I dont speak English (YOU JUST DID!) I was of little use so didnt have much to say or do and wandered back for breakfast. R and his wife and I were all booked on the 12.30ish plane, I say ish because my booking said Dept 12.40, Rs said depart 12.30..so no time for an early dive because packing wet gear is a nightmare. I spent the rest of the morning packing up the little cottage, hanging out any wet gear on the clothesline to dry and generally doing bugger all except sitting staring at the lagoon and breathing in the purity of Rangiroa. Its a ... read more

I woke up at sunrise, stumbling out into the most beautiful scenery you could imagine, and realising its real. The sort of place where blinking is a sin because thats one millisecond of it you missed. I knew one thing about Bora Bora, I did not want to do the tourist things, I wanted to find out from the people what the real deal was, I was looking for the real Bora Bora, not the day visit cruise ship one. Two different things. The best way to get around Bora Bora as a single white female is hitching. Because there are no other SWFs heading rapidly towards that big 5-0 wandering along the islands one road by the time you have hitched your first lift, everyone knows who it was with and that you are..a pure ... read more

I didnt actually mean to go to Bora Bora, and to be honest, wasnt looking forward to it. Its never been on my list, it looks pretty in pictures, but id always imagined it to be what its marketed as..a honeymooners couples retreat romantic destination with very little to do except sit around and get a tan in between post nuptual trysts. Im astonished at the words i found to describe that rather than reverting to the aussie bogun and saying..everyone bonks on Bora Bora. Firstly, you get Lei'd on arrival. Then when you arrive at your ridiculously expensive and ridiculously beautiful hotel you get a blow job. Im sure the islanders and the hoteliers know theres a certain amount of innuendo there and its not just me with a dirty mind. Flying into Bora Bora ... read more

I was only looking on Ebay for a pair of Jeans...which is how I ended up spending three weeks in the south pacific. Cold wintery Perth, sitting there looking at the fast decomposing carcass of a relationship wandering how to get out of here and how to find my groove again I was hunting around on Ebay and decided to check for cheap flights...I was dying inside, felt suffocated and knew one thing, i had to get out of here and out of this relationship. It had run its course. While browsing jetstar and air asia cheapo flights i stumbled upon a holiday accomodation package someone had won but couldnt take with two nights accomodation in Tahiti and 5 nights in Moorea...I bid on it. Two days later I had secured it for $670. All i ... read more

To die a backpacker death allows you to exit your body, to float up and see yourself from above, from the outside, to look down on what you have become from afar. This new perspective allows you to evaluate what you have become, what you have learned and where you wish to go. New perspectives are why I began my journey all those years ago. Location: Opunohu Bay, Moorea, French Polynesia. Time: Sunrise. Weather: Fine. Speed: Cruising. Mood: Elation. I’m at the bow of this huge ship some ten stories from the ocean beneath, as it glides into this outlandishly exotic harbor (see panorama above). I don’t feel it at the time, but as I write it now, it seems like the finale to some cheesy chick flick adventure. The scene dwarfs me, the ship and ... read more

I arrived in Moorea with such awe. I can't believe how gorgeous this island is. It is one of the many islands of the French Polynesian Islands (probably the most famous island is Bora Bora or Tahiti). Being here makes me realize the necesity of learning French. Granted, most people here speak a bit of English, but I think the reality is, it definitely would help me if I can learn how to speak french for my future visits to France to see Aurelie and of course, here! I came to my hotel and had the luxury of staying in a hut rather than a hotel building. The location of the hotel is very much surrounded by local people in the middle of nowhere next to the beach. The room was ok and definitely has many ... read more

My last day in Auckland was pretty darn nice. I woke up after having a nice sleep in and ventured off to the waterfront to have a good ol' breakfast. It was absolutely lovely having a view of the harbour while eating my scrumptious eggs benedict. What more could you ask for? Afterwards, it was time to search for this 'hokey pokey' ice cream flavor that everyone insisted I have to try. I went up and down Queen Street and into the side streets, and found zero ice cream shops. Then...I see it: a chocolate shop with the flavor 'hokey pokey' with amongst six other flavors. I got a scoop of it and it was yummy in my tummy. Basically, vanilla mixed in with hints of caramel and honeycomb. In the afternoon, Daniel and Hannes (the ... read more
