The Blue Parrot Hostel is a small, friendly place in Potts Point, Sydney. I came to Sydney a wiery, tired and penniless traveller. When I walked through the door on September 12st 2005 I was welcomed by one of the owners, Andrew. I felt completely at ease seeing that I was tired he quickly got the formalities over and done with and showed me around the hostel. It struck me straight away how cosy and comfortable the place seemed to be. A TV lounge (although the TV is not overbearing) and a free internet terminal in the corner. The Kitchen had plenty of space for all my (limited) cooking needs. The rooms too were clean and spacious and i quickly had a power nap before coming back downstairs eager to see the sights of Sydney. Andrew ... read more

October 24th Cairns Check out time 9.30 a little early. Steve picked up car but because he was early we got an upgrade. Drove along the coast, which appears similar to Hawaii, for a few kilometres and then turned inland. The scenery really changes here. Steep roads, rampant, lush and tropical vegetation. We are now in Far North Queensland in the Wet Tropics ...rainforest. Great views of the Cairns area from the lookout points. Can see the Hawl Along waterskiers. They have a zip wire and are dragged round the lake by that instead of a boat. Arrived at Kuranda mid morning. This is the only village actually in the rainforest so the pamphlets say. It is a fair size place with a good info centre and several things to do and see. And when you've ... read more

The road trip portion of our trip has begun! We picked up our rental car (Toyota Camry) at the Brisbane airport and we'll have it until we fly out from Sydney. It's great to have a car for the rest of our trip - now we don't have to lug everything around - we can just leave it in the trunk. We ended up staying one more night at Gord and Sheryl's place in Brisbane. We had been pushing Nathan pretty hard over the past few days, so we thought we'd give him a day off to nap and play at their apartment while Nancy took a hop-on hop-off bus around Brisbane. We had a nice dinner with Gord, Sheryl and Sally and got in once last game of Wizzard. We've already made plans to meet ... read more

After the exersions of Byron Bay are next stop was Brisbane - "The fastest growing Cidy in Australia, Mate". We only had one thing on our minds - Theme Parks, but we had to choose carefully. Do we opt for the roller coaster rides, the movie type one (yeh right!) or wet 'n' wild. Bearing in mind it's getting hot now we opted for Wet n Wild and fortunately for you we didn't take a camera! We spent the next day at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Sara couldn't resist paying to hug a koala whilst I contented myself with hand feeding the Kangeroos and wild Lorikeets. It was great fun. ... read more

This is our first real entry in a first Travel Blog. We've both been overseas before but never for so long and this seems a great way to keep in touch. So, who are we? Well, we're both ambulance paramedics, living in Canberra, Australia. Amber grew up in Canberra and I moved here about 10 years ago. Although it's the capital of Australia (no, Sydney is not the capital of Australia), Canberra is little more than a big country town -- only 300,000 people, lots of bushland, clean air and a great lifestyle. Although, we love it here, there's a big beautiful world out there to see and we're off to see it. We have 6 months off work to travel the world and off we go! We leave Australia on 11 November. First, Peru and ... read more

Hoi allemaal! Nou ja, lang leve MSN, ... read more

Well at the moment we're sitting in Broome on the west coast of Australia after 2 weeks of hard driving to get here. We've covered 8500km in Ronnie Ray (legendary car) and he is still gunning like a champion. So we'll give you a run down of the last month Started on the 1st of Oct in Sydney. Brett picked us up and we gate crashed Shell's 21st birthday. Next day we were at a family christening and chilled out with the spiritual father for a bit. Then got a move on to get to Kempsey the same day, watched the NRL final in Kempsey pub. Next day powered up to Coffs Harbour to visit Vossa & then to Surfers Paradise to see Kiki and finally getting to Noosa and Castaway cove for a few days ... read more

I have to start this entry with a little discovery I’ve made in my travels (these and prior ones) so as not to appear a wee bit jaded in my adventures and ramblings along. So here it is...cities are great. They are wonderful places to live, to work, to eat, to do business, to party, to shop, to socialize, to raise children but they are not great places to visit (or at least they aren't for me). This is by no fault of the cities themselves...they try...with their museums of the southern railroad crossing through the southern alps of New South Wales and Victoria...they do really try. But they just don't hold your interest for long...now all cities aren't this way. Take London, New York, Rome, San Francisco...these are cities with personalities and a breath and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Victor Harbor October 30th 2005

We were lucky enough to have a few nights at Victor Harbor to catch up with friends and do 3 walks. Victor Harbor is a fabulous sea-side town about 75 minutes South of Adelaide. It is a retirement hub and every time we visit, there seems to be more and more houses springing up! It has been the site for a whaling industry - but now eco-tourism promotes whale-watching through the winter primarily of the Southern right whale. Some web sites to visit to learn more about Victor Harbor include * the Tourism centre and * the Whale Centre. We did three walks over the three days. * the almost compulsory Granite Island walk (2 hours) * the walk to the summit of the Bluff... read more
