I went camping with Don, Lucky, Marrika, Malik, Klauss, Michael & Sarah at the end of September. We wanted to camp by the sea but realised that no campsites along the coast allow fires, and you must have a fire when you go camping so we got a tip from a guy at Port Lonsdale and drove for another hour and half to a campsite inland at Stevenson's Falls, north of Apollo Bay (on the Great Ocean Road). It was already dark when we got there and it had rained earlier so I think it was about 3am when we finally got the fire lit! And of course we had to stay up for a few hours to make the most of it. Yeah, it was a bit of a late one. We were awoken early ... read more

Joe flew to Perth on 12th October and, after mourning and feeling a tad lost for a day or so, I moved to Cable Beach Backpackers with Sian and Anna. I soon gained a job Housekeeping at Cable Beach Resort, which is what they were already doing. We walked to work each day, and after 3 days training were sent out alone with a trolley and a list of rooms. For services we were allowed 20mins and 1 hour for departures. Although it was very hot, we were in and out of rooms - thank goodness for air con! After working a week, we gained a house through the resort HR - $62 per week with the 1st week free as we volunteered to clean the house! :-) Life was grand, for a whole week we ... read more

We arrived in the lovely and very dead town on South West Rocks, the day before the Melbourne Cup. We did not have a pre-arranged place to stay, so we headed to the tourist information spot. They sent us to this "not-so-nice" motel. After passing on the motel, we went across the street and Sarah and I went into a real estate holiday place. We immediately were able to get a 2 bedroom apartment, one block from the beach and at a cheaper rate ($60 per night) than the seedy motel. After arranging the apartment, we headed to the local dive shop and booked a dive trip for the next day. Sarah and I were going to do 2 dives, one of them being a cave dive. I have never dove at night so I was ... read more

Melbourne cup Hallo paardenliefhebbers!!!

CAIRNS Colorful Cairns. Whether it was the fish and coral in the Great Barrier Reef, the flowers, the stained glass panels of St. Monica's Cathedral, the food, gelato or the characters we met, Cairns was colorful. Our biggest reason for going to Cairns was to get to the Barrier Reef. One day we went out for some diving and snorkeling. We want to mention the outfit that we chose because they were really, really good. We went on the Sea Quest with the Deep Sea Divers Den crew. It was a newer fast boat with a small number of passengers and a fairly large crew, so we got a lot of personal attention and it only took us an hour and a half to get to the Reef, so we had more time in the water ... read more

well, as i said before, Betty went away for the week and left me as the cook... so yesterday was a bit crazy, between feeding the chickens, donkey, cow and the humans... i made spagetti bologneise and a big tomato salad and a cherry pie.. apperantly everyone liked it (or were too hungry to care). the only problem was that the water refused to boil.. so we started eating half an hour later... it was really wierd cooking for so many people (were supposed to be 9, but were only 7 at the end). the farm life is soo cool, i love just staying here, life has a whole different pace here... well, i'll have to go and feed the donkey, hope the cows don't eat her food this time (she's only a baby donkey) later ... read more

November 1st Spent the day at Hartley's Crocodile Farm, just outside Cairns. Saw some very frisky (for them) Koalas. Kept the boys amused for ages. Then on to see the Salt Water crocodiles being fed. Learnt that they are lazy creatures with brains the size of a golf ball but are very strong. They move a lot faster in water than out. Most of their energy is from the sun. They will eat or kill at any time even if they are not hungry. Looked really fearsome to me. We moved to the freshwater crocs which are smaller and less of a threat to humans. Still wouldn't like to meet one. We were then loaded onto boats and taken for a trip round the pond. More dangling of meat above the water gives us some great ... read more

So we arrived in Byron Bay with plans to camp on the beach for 3 days. It sounded like a great plan, except for one thing. When we were checking into the campsite, the attendant told us that they were expecting hail storms that evening and maybe we should re-think the camping idea. No need to say that twice to me, so we picked a cabin and everything was cool. I think Chris still wanted to camp but I was getting a cabin no matter what, even if I was by myself in the cabin. The cabin contained one double bed, one single bed over the double bed (like a bunk bed), a TV and a small fridge. Washrooms were a 2 minute walk from the cabin. Washrooms were very clean, better than the hotel in ... read more

This is a special update strickly focussed on diving. I know this is a strange place for it. You think we might have included it in the section about Port Douglas and the Great Barrier reef but this dive site blew us away (Thanks to Gord for recommending it). We decided to stay right in South West Rocks after Sarah went diving in Byron Bay and one of the other divers suggested it as opposed to the bigger city of Port Macquarie that we were considering. I won't say anything else about Sarah's dive trip in Byron, even though it was great, accept that she saw a green sea turtle, face-to-face about 3 ft away. South West Rocks is a really quiet, really small tourist town. We were able to get a nice two bedroom apartment ... read more
