Canberra - Newcastle Country roads lined with squishy bloody road kill… makes you wonder who is more stupid, the roos or the drivers… Starting out with a 50c Enya cassette bought from the Salvos yesterday, and before I realise I am on my path and a luminescent fresh sea of green lies before me, and I’m restraining my tears… not sure what I’m feeling but something between leaving C behind and the joy of the open future… I find myself overwhelmed but mustn’t grieve here, too hard to drive between pools of tears… Fields of radiant salvation jane/patterson’s curse glow across the hills and drifting clouds create dancing shadows over me. A horse nurses her foal. Sure I’ve seen the countryside before, but in this moment I’m seeing it like never before… I love moments like ... read more

Fraser Island Next stop on the magical mystery tour of the coast was Hervey Bay a rather unspectacular place with nothing much of a beach just a strip of hostels, hotels and shops, but its used a jumping ground to get to Frasrer Island and so the crowds come flocking in. After a bit of a late start due to my refusal to get a bus at some ridiculous hour in the morning after drinking and diving into the early hours of the night before, I arrived too late to book myself onto the Island trip for the next day and so got myself a much needed early night. The next day I booked my trip and we had a breifing meeting in the afternoon to put us into our groups and to let us know ... read more

Finally a holiday! After the wonderful experience of packing my life up in boxes and bags, moving out of my unit ("bumping" my car in a typical nami fashion so that I had to get it fixed before I left Australia...I time things so that I can get the most stress out of a short space of time....) I managed to get on the Surfari bus with my "little" brother Tim on Monday 31st October and we began our trip up north with about 22 other people all keen to learn or practice surfing. The big yellow bus (named "Capt Good Vibes") drove over the harbour bridge, past the opera house and out of Sydney towards our first campsite near Kempsey on the north coast of NSW. After hours and hours of driving we were all ... read more

We can now say that we have camped (okay only for two nights, but who's counting)! But I won't jump ahead...here's where we left off last time... Our road trip continued with a short one-night stop in Port Stephen's (specifically Anna Bay). We stayed in a cabin at a caravan park and relaxed by the pool in the morning before heading off to see the sand dunes near by. It was such a shock to see the dunes as far as the eye could see - it really felt like we were in the desert! We then headed off to Sydney for Nancy's final days in Australia before heading home. Sydney is a beautiful city, although we must have picked the worst area to stay in (we stayed in the Chippendale area for anyone who knows ... read more

Well, as whale watching was cancelled this morning due to high winds (Exmouth is obviously the place for me to not do much!), time to put some photos from the Kimberley trip on line. I'm hopping on the bus to Coral Bay at lunchtime and will spend a couple of days there, before a bus ride down the coast over 3 days - arriving in Perth on Sunday evening. Looking forward to a week there - the Fremantle festival is on next weekend so that should be good.... read more

So first impressions of Australia! The people are great. Its soo nice to be back in a place where you can speak your own language and people care about customer service. After yet another argument with Lan Chile whilst boarding the flight from Santiago to Sydney (its too annoying & frustrating to repeat...I'm still going through therapy ha ha!) it was fab to arrive in Sydney where the Qantas staff were so helpful, we even got some of our other flights changed for free :-) First impression of Perth where that we had arrived in an old peoples retirement village - bungalows as far as the eye could see. I was a little concerned abut this and eventually decided to ask Phil (Alex's step uncle who had kindly collected us from the airport) why there were ... read more

Spent two nights in Airlie Beach, it's a bit like Byron Bay. Our main aim was a daytrip to the Whitsunday Islands, in particular Whitehaven Beach to see if it looked like the picture Miles bought me one Christmas. It did. We set out in the early morning on a largish boat to spend the morning on Whitehaven Beach. After crowding onto the viewing platform to take photos I managed to dramatically throw my sunglasses over the edge and onto the rocks below. Nick gallantly offered to try and rescue them but I'm not sure I could have coped with two losses in one day (or was just an excuse to get away from me for a while, mmmm). We trotted over to the beach in the searing heat. The sand was boiling hot, very white ... read more

A Brief Discussion On Processed Food Down Under Each time I’ve tried to buy frozen chicken tenders or frozen fish stick I’ve come home only to read on the box that the cooking instructions are actually that. Cooking instructions. Not thawing - but cooking. Why? Because all the frozen food meats down here are raw! Can you imagine? No throwing some chicken nuggets into the microwave. Those bad boys have to be totally cooked or you’ll be serving up some E-coli Nuggets. It’s been exasperating since, if I’m going to go through the effort of cooking something, it might as well be real fresh meat. As a result, our freezer is full of opened but not used frozen raw things. What is convenient or useful about frozen raw meat? And don’t get me started on the ... read more
