Yet another air conditioned Greyhound coach brings me into the gateway town of Airlie beach. The passengers are somewhat more sterotypically travellers than my last journey. And I mean this in the cliched east coast pre/post uni/career break (i.e. me) type of traveller. I was a little dissapointed as I realised that really everyone who comes to Australia does pretty much the same thing - and I wish I wasnt. Best intentions aside though, I am doing what everyone does, because with my time frame and with the 'essentials' being just that, Its really the best option. So back to Airlie. It is a Gateway to the Whitesunday islands and the ubiquitous backpacker pursuit of 3 days sailing. Or dependant on the crew, 3 days drinking, but on a boat. With Larry (tropical cyclone larry that ... read more

Byron Bay: We had a 14 hour coach journey to Byron from sydney overnight, i slept but em had no sleep! We stayed at Bron Bay YHA which was fine, good location, 4min walk to the beach and 2min from all the shops and resturantes. We spent the whole first day down the beach not realising how burn'nt we were untill we got back and saw the bright red marks!!! The pain! We did loads of body boarding which is wicked apart from when you get nailed by a big wave and have to hope your arm doesn't fall out!!!!!!!!!!( Okay maybe thats only me!) Once we had enough of sunbathing we decided to book a trip kayacking with dolphins. It sounded good, cruising the ocean looking at the dolphins, easy! OH NO it weren't! That ... read more

This morning I woke up, had a ncie short work-out and headed out for Yum-Chai with my uncles Marks Parents. It was cool the way the restaurant was set . Basically a bunch of chinese waiters walking around with carts of food and you can pick and choose what you want. Never have to wait: Quite Enjoyable. Afterwards Mark asked is I wanted to go see some skippys (kangaroos) and so we were off. The place we ended up turned out to be more of a wildlife sanctuary. I was able to pet the kangaroos and koalas. There were the craziest animals, wallabees, dingos, unicorns, penguins. And so I was able to tick one of the first thingsw off my list, get a picture with a kangaroo. But I got much more than that. THe pictures ... read more

No entry for yesterday as we didn't do anything but sit by the lagoon in the hot hot sun! Gutted! Today we've made our way to Surfers Paradise. Bus at 8, had a laugh with our driver Chris, who took us Zorbing. Zorbing is sitting in a big rubber ball with a lot of water and it rolls down the hill with you inside. I didn't do it because I thought I would get cholostrophobic (however u spell it!) and didn't want to get wet! Got here, and once again to get our bearings we thought we would go a bit of retail therapy. It's nice and tacky here!... read more

Well scuba lessons are crazy! There's heaps of stuff to learn. Everything from getting nitrogen blubbles in your blood if you surface to quickly, to calculating how long your air lasts at certain depths. Then, theres all the equipment, getting it on (soooo heavy) and checking everything before you jump into the water. So our first 2 days we learnt the underwater signals (including the out of air signal which I hope I never have to use), we learnt how to become neutrally buoyant - basically hovering in the water so you don't harm coral or touch the ocean bottom. Hmmmm what else....we had massive amounts of homework and wrote 5 tests, including a final exam which we both passed. I have a huge textbook that we went through in 2 days. We are supposed to ... read more

Yesterday we finished our 4-day dive trip. As it turned out, the weather was actually pretty good, and the dives were awesome, and the people we met on the boat were great!!! We did a total of 10 dives (2 night dives!!) and I got to try my hand as an amatuer underwater photographer again (National Geographic, here i come!). My personal highlight was seeing a sting Ray, and Gary actually saw a (small) shark. We're currently hanging out in Cairns, because the weather is gorgeous and we can't seem to tear ourselves away from the beach/pool. There is supposed to be a tropical storm coming hitting on Monday, so we'll probably start heading south tomorrow.......cheers! -Michelle... read more

Kata Tjuta is better than Uluru. SCIENTIFIC FACT. Ok maybe not but i thought it was. Spent a couple of days staying Yulara, which is in the middle of nowhere, and hence really expensive. First day i did the Kantju Gorge walk at Ayers rock because i only had about an hour. Then we went to the sunset viewing area for Ayers rock. It was cloudy and horrible and there were no good pictures. Next day i did the Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) sunrise viewing which was much clearer. We were then taken to the edge of the olgas and the beginning of the Valley of the Winds Walk. It took me about 2 hours in total, and it was awesome. As in the actual definition of awesome in places. Especially Karingana lookout point 2. Check ... read more

The last few days in melbourne were pretty cool but a while ago now and I'm tired so I'll keep this blog brief. Basically I went to see an Aussie Rules match, watch England vs Scotland in the hockey at the common and went to see a place called hanging rock, which featured heavily in a film I like called 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'. Around all that I managed to fit in a fair bit more sightseeing, another cricket game (Andrew's housemate Greg plays for Melbourne Uni) and a couple of BBQ's. The Aussie Rules match was a pre season practice match so the stadium was pretty empty but it was great fun. Adam came with me and was there to explain everything for me so it all seemed to make perfect sense - contrary to ... read more
