We headed for Central Quay and caught the ferry to the Zoo, which is set on a lovely wooded hill overlooking the Harbour on the north shore. We saw our first kangaroos and koalas (Jen's favourite) but my favourite was the Tasmanian Devil. It was a bit sad to see the gorillas, giraffes and elephants in such a sterile environment having seen them in the wild in Africa - but the zoo was one of the better that I've visited. We gave ourselves a treat in the evening by going to the Sydney Opera House to see 'Sweeney Todd' the musical. It was very special evening - especially during the interval sipping a drink on the veranda overlooking the harbour and bridge in the warm evening atmosphere. ... read more

Hi everyone, take a deep breath and get a fresh cuppa, this is a bit of a long one! Also if any 'L's are missing it's the dodgy keyboard we're using! We checked out of the hostel from hell (Planet Inn, Perth BOOO in case you've forgotten) as early as possible, and enjoyed a nutricious breakfast of cold pizza (doggy bag from previous night in Freo) and Coffee Chill (flavoured milk we've both become pretty addicted to) before picking up our set of wheels for the next 7 days. Our Toyato Corrolla was to be known as No Birds for the week for the simple reason that that was written on the side of it (how imaginitive are we!?). We chucked our bags into the boot and headed back to Fremantle (or Freo if you're cool ... read more

Having had our fill of wine and beer we headed towards world famous surf spot - Byron Bay. We hit the road for a two day journey, involving an overnight stop at the rather plain Port Macquirie. We soon had the joy of seeing our first "big thing". It is popular here to build massive versions of things for no apparent reason. This one was a petrol station modelled on Ayers Rock - weird! We stopped in a gorgeous place called Seal Rocks. Unfortunately no seals but great views and a good spot to polish off our picnic platter which we had bought the previous day on our wine tour. The second day of travelling and our second big thing, this one was a banana and was scarier that the previous Ayers Rock as it was ... read more

We were up early ready for our first dive (7:00am) - what a great way to start the day. The sun was shining, Crowded House on the radio and the aquatic life was great!!! The dives just got better and better during the day (and night). Three dives in the day and one that evening (for me) saw our dives and time on the GBR increase. As I was a bit pink, we played cards with some new friends - Liz, Ian, Ted and Becky - below deck in the afternoon, waiting for our surface interval time to pass. The night dive was amazing. Went with Les and Jackie from Bristol (as Sarah was not too keen). Saw a shark, a sleeping turtle and the most amazing star lit sky as we surfaced - COOL!... read more

Very sleepy after a 12 hour overnight coach journey from cairns. Arrived at Airlie Beach this morning at 11am. Checked into our hostel, called beaches backpackers, and sorted out all the details about meeting tomorrow to start our sailing around the Whitsundays Islands. They are a group of islands off the coast of Airlie Beach and have fabulous beaches and coral reef. Very excited!! we meet at 3pm tomorrow for our 3 day, 3 night sailing trip in our luxury boat. Looking forward to Whitehaven beach which is meant to be beautiful. Spending the day revitilising and catching up on missed sleep and celebrity gossip as this girl at my hostel gave me her copy of Heat magazine! Also, we have television in our room so hoping to find which channel neighbours is on - when ... read more

I have been lazier than ever this week, reading, bumming around on the beach, eating, and attending crab racing. Glebe does that to you. After a few days of fairly stormy wet weather the sun returned in force today and I hit Coogee Beach with Casey, my American friend from the hostel, and two mates. Last night was valentines and the only way to take shelter from the deluge of love letters was of course to go crab racing at the Friend In Hand pub with Casey, Breeana, Mark and Ben. I bet $3 on a crab which I named Ludovich (a nod to Ludo in Labyrinth) but I didn't get to watch him in action becuse the bar staff took to spraying the crowd with soda water and I had to run for cover in ... read more

Well this is my second to last day working in Sydney and it comes with great relief that I am writing this as it means that I will soon be touring around Oz in a camper van! So... I have been working really hard (well by travelling standards anyway..) and it is about time I had a break and resume work on the suntan!! I have managed to get work through agencies here and there (by begging most of the time as there are so many backapckers here!), abut 5 weeks in total and have saved up some hard earned pennies. I am sat at my desk right now (if i type it makes me look busy you see...) as an executive receptionist. It reminds me of the devil wears prada, in so much as the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania February 14th 2007

Ahhh, Tasmania... The punchline of so many jokes, yet a place that so few people (including Aussies) actually visit. After spending 10 days on the Apple Isle, I would definitely place it right near the top of the list of must see destinations in Australia. It is so different from anywhere else I have been here, and a refreshing change. As soon as I stepped off the plane and smelled the fresh air blowing all around me, I knew I was going to love Tassie. I started my journey in Hobart, the most southerly capital in Australia. There is a tendency here to point out how each place is "the most" something, which I found quite annoying. None the less, it is a beautiful little city set in a calm bay (when I saw it, at ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay » Fraser Island February 14th 2007

We have spent the last few nights on fraser island. Great place. Huge long beaches. and lots of sun. Ryan is feeling a bit under the weather, and it may be due to the beer he was consuming, and lack of drinking the water. Either way it went great. We had alot of fun. We met some english blokes, and two irish gals. They seem like lots of fun. The island itself was good right up until it started raining. The night it rained there were four tents for everyone to sleep in (i brought my own thankfully) and they leaked like french safes. Actually some of them filled up with water and drowned out the sleepers. Everyone ended up taking refuge in the trucks and packed togeather like sardines. It was a really really rough ... read more
