The whole of this week has been spent doing very little and enjoying taking it very easy. We had wanted to find some work, but everything has started to wind down for Christmas and New Year, so we resigned ourselves that we won’t be working until January. Most days have been spent driving down the road to Barrabup pool - a lovely turquoise natural pool of water in the middle of the forest that’s great for swimming and jumping from trees and stuff! It’s just so nice there - there’s a slightly oily film on the water but it’s not dirty at all - it’s actually tea tree oil! So it’s great for the skin! I’ll write more about our stay in Nannup at a later date. The Internet café’s closing shortly so I have to ... read more

Been spending my time lately working in another small town south of Perth, Pemberton. The YHA hostel here is more reminiscent of a hard-labour camp than a backackers. The usual atmosphere of travelers sitting round drinking and laughing throughout the afternoons and evenings has been replaced by one where the "workers" are picked up every morning at 6am and driven off to toil in the fields picking fruit during the heat of the Australian summer before being dumped back at the hostel broken and exhausted to eat, sleep, and do the same thing the next day. This, coupled with the way that when you check in you are issued with one knife, fork, spoon, and one, plate, bowl and cup led me to rename the place 'Pemberton Prison' !! From my own experiences as a backpacker ... read more

... read more

Woensdag 20 december.

Hi all, Thanks for the xmas greetings David and Bob. We are kicking back in Margaret River at the moment. Been here 3 days and still haven't got to a winery! Did some caving though and found a good brewery and a wonderful chocolate factory. Prior we have been in Perth, catching up with some old friends (Jake and Paul) from our much younger Mt Waverley days. Perth was fun. We especially liked Cottesloe Beach and Fremantle. We will be aiming to have xmas at the valley of the giants near Denmark, then off to Esperance and the Southern Ocean. Will probably meet Janine's brother Andrew around the Otways before slipping back into the Peninsula in Mid January. Anyone else want to catch up for a spot of camping once we hit Victoria, let us know. ... read more

So since our return to sunny Perth, we have been mostly playing in the pool! There have been other things happening around that but mostly, we have had a gaig playing in the pool. We have mostly been playing D.O.N.K.E.Y. and Extreme lilo jumping competitions. Other adventures have included the Aussie type Christmas events…which is strange…so weird to be here for Christmas, its roasting hot, not that many people have there trees up and there isn’t the consistent playing of Christmas songs in every store you walk into…this you may think is a good thing…but it’s amazing what you miss! They don’t go all frantic, late night shopping and mad dives to get all your presents, most people are going away on their holidays…madness! Brian doesn’t miss our version of Christmad in the slightest, me on ... read more

We left for Australia a few Saturdays ago, excited of the prospect of a new country and the second part of our adventure around the world! We landed very excited to be greeted by Annmarie! My cousin! For me it was a great relief to see some family, and knowing that we had accommodation, especially with Simon not having a bag- it certainly took the pressure off of us! For the first few days we simply slept, played pool and drank (a little) The first week in Perth was slow and very chilled. We experienced the laid back life style, playing pool all night and drinking the finest wine! Its great not having to pay to play pool- especially as we haven't quite mastered it. We have caught up with John and Elaine (Another of my ... read more

I realized today that I haven't updated in over a week, so I figured it was time. No news really. Still having the time of my life in the hostel. I've met some amazing people here from Perth, as well as all over the world. Seriously, I love this place. I moved from my mixed dorm into an all female dorm. My room before stank, and the air conditioning didn't work as well as I would have liked. Now, even though there's four more beds (and again I've got a top bunk), I'm a lot happier. Its far too hot here to have the air conditioning on the brink. I'm still looking for a job, and in my opinion its going well. Ok, well not great. My effort at applying is impressive, but I haven't gotten ... read more

So we rented a car and first we headed North, up highway one, along the West Australian coast to a town called Geraldton. When we first arrived everything was closed, which we figured was quite normal as everything closes really early in Australia - we're talking REALLY early, 3pm on a Saturday early! Anyhow when we awoke on Sunday morning the city was a ghost town, everything had remaind shut. There were no cars, no people, even the seaguls hadn't turned out. When we inquired, a local woman told us we had 'expect this in a small town' - Geraldton is the biggest city in the Mid-West, population 24,000 - what would happen when we got to Kilbarri (population 1,000)?! Alas, all was not lost, it seems Western Australia has it all covered on Sundays, three ... read more

Ok, so today is the last day of the test and we have walked out of the ground at lunch leaving little faith in Monty and KP to bat out the rest of the day needed to secure the draw and keep alive the little hope we have of retaining the urn. Currently now writing this in Fremantle a city on the outskirts of Perth, just arrived and noticed we have officially lost the Ashes, won't bore you with my opinion, or the cricket... So, I left you with the last blog approximately a week ago, not been able to get to the internet since then, so sorry bout that. Right so, after the late night on the Saturday, I'm pleased to say that the Sunday wasn't a complete write-off and we made it out of ... read more
