We have some accommodation booked in Kununurra tomorrow so we needed to make some tracks this morning. The further north we get the greener the Kimberleys are becoming which is making this unique landscape all the more spectacular. After rolling through Halls Creek we headed to Wyndham which sits on the Cambridge Gulf and is as far north as we will get in WA. The waterfront was a nice spot to catch our breath but the water was not exactly inviting us in for a dip. Even without the numerous danger signs you do not need much to figure out that this is salt water croc country. The fishing is apparently outstanding but getting to the shoreline to board your vessel would be an occupational safety concern if there ever was one. The van struggled as ... read more

DAY 220 Well again I was up early today, as we were moving on, Caroline and I sat around discussing whether to go to El Questro or not, but I was happy to leave the decision up to Caroline. Though at the moment my focus was finishing off the outstanding blog’s, so we are up to date before we leave oh and have some breakfast. Parry’s Farm Creek is a great campsite, nice and green, the staff are friendly and the facilities are good, oh yea and there is heaps of sunshine and warm weather. Caroline asks if I fancied a bacon sandwich, I didn’t really need to reply to that empty question so in a few minutes she was off to the camp kitchen with the frying pan and all the goodies to make a ... read more

DAY 219 Andy was out of bed early, yet again but surprisingly I too was out of bed early, I think it was about 6.15, but it was daylight and fairly warm, so too good to stay in bed. I found Andy outside tippy tappying away on the laptop. We needed the big aerial from the truck in order to get some Internet access. However we had to stick the aerial somewhere, the truck was not close enough and it would not work in the tree, so the only place we could stick the aerial was on the kettle (because the magnetic base stuck to it) then, voila! We have Internet access, only 2 bars, but better than nothing. We are considering asking Telstra if they would make a proprietary mounting for a kettle, just in ... read more

Distance traveled 2558km/4060km(63%).Stayed 1 night(essentially a one night hitching post)and leaving Broome early with a 300km journey ahead meant that, after a good 5 night break,we were back on the road again.Importantly,we left the NW Coastal Highway and now found ourselves on the Great Northern Highway which headed eastwards into the Outback and Kimberley region. It is also called “The Savannah Way” which is very apt as the countryside started to change away from semi tropical and treed to open grassland with far fewer trees to be seen.We both remarked that if one removed the eucalyptus trees, the countryside is very similar to that seen in the northern reaches of Kruger(substitute mopani for eucalyptus). And for good measure we now started to see boab trees with the largest in the region located at Derby. It has a girth of 14 meters ... read more

Mid afternoon we arrived at Wyndam and what appeared to be a very run down dusty and dirty town. So much for the excitement of arriving in a town after all that time!! The caravan park was old but had the basics as well as a pool so we set up camp right next to it. You should have heard the excitement when the girls saw the pool - not one of the waterfalls we went to got that much praise!! We decided a night out at the pub was the way to go, so we headed into town to the Wyndam pub for dinner. The little girls enjoyed exploring the pub, Ki collecting coasters and Ella discovering the toys. The meals were massive but we put our best effort to make a dent in them. ... read more

Tossed and turned in my sleeping bag in the early hours then woke up properly around 4.30am to realise why I was restless - we could hear what sounded like rain but was in fact a huge wind storm directly overhead - really strange. It felt and sounded like it was just about to pour it down with rain, like the storms in Malaysia - but no rain came! I unzipped our tent just as Elizabeth's tent cover whipped off her tent and flew into ours! Maaike came past looking for her clothes which she'd hung out her tent to dry which were now flying all over the campsite - mayhem! I had to keep one foot in the tent to stop it from blowing away while trying to fasten on the waterproof cover. Ian came ... read more
