DAY NINE We leave El Questro and stop at Wyndham to view the 5 rivers lookout and the Cambridge Gulf. You get a panoramic view from the lookout. We continued to Kununurra via the Argyle Homestead Museum. The homestead was the home of the well known pastoralist the Duracks and is full of household implements of the time. There was a resident bower bird who had a huge nest built in the grounds and kept a watchful eye over it from above. After lunch we arrived at Lake Argyle and boarded a boat for a 3 hour cruise down the Ord River stopping along the way for afternoon tea. The river is like glass. The boat driver told us all about the development of the Ord River Scheme and the way it changed the ... read more

We got up at a ridiculously early time so we could greet the sunrise at Marlgu Lagoon. We hope you enjoy the photos. After a few hours it was starting to warm up and we agreed there were things that needed to be done back in Kununurra (no I'm not joking). We had some electrical work done (fitted a battery charger for when we would be connected to power at caravan parks) and ordered a new awning from The Canvas Shed. We were quite exhausted from all of the busy-ness so we booked in to a motel for a rest (sort of goodbye to nice places and get ready for the Cruiser)... read more

We had arranged to move the Coaster to Jakes in readiness for the big trip in the Cruiser. The next step in our testing program of the Cruiser was underway! We would drive out to Parry's Lagoon and set up camp in the Cruiser. The plan would be to wean us off the Caravan Parks (in the Coaster) and start "roughing it" in the Cruiser. We travelled via The Grotto and carefully dropped down the 130 odd steps to the bottom but there was no waterfall unfortunately and the creek wasn't running - the dry wet season strikes again! Sunset was fabulous, birdwatching at the Marlgu Lagoon. When we returned to Parry's farm it was starting to get quite dark. We managed to spot a few hoppers. Later in the evening, the dingoes started to howl ... read more

Day 4 Thursday 15 May 2014 Bungle Bungle Ranges, Lake Argyle, Ord River Scheme, Kununurra (see map of our flight path in the photos) Overnight we had sailed to the Wyndham jetty. It was high tide. After a beautiful breakfast we boarded one of the local busses driven by one of the local Councillors (who had lived in the region for 40 years). He took us to the Wyndham Airport (see photos) where we boarded a DC3 plane, carrying 10 passengers + the pilot. We were off to see something which Tom & I had been wanting to see for a long time - the Bungle Bungles. When Tom & Richard drove around Australia in 1968, the Bungles were not even a tourist feature. It took us 45 minutes to fly to the Bungles (Purnululu National ... read more

Wyndham, our last look at the coastline of WA, as our journey from here will turn east through Kununurra and onwards eventually through Katherine to Darwin - weather permitting. The journey from Warmun to Wyndham continued through rolling country with many areras suffering from bushfires. The area is generally at high risk away from the coast, and as Marg drove north we had to cross one particularly smoky zone. Fortunately, the fire was well subsided so for a few minutes we drove through the haze. It was not until we got to Wyndham and climbed to the hill top lookout that the extent of the fires could be assessed. In almost 360 degrees of view, there was smoke. None of the fires were threatening, but certainly wide spread. As Marg drove, we passed every 10 minutes ... read more

Geo: -15.4874, 128.123We decided to go for a day trip from Kununurra to Wyndham about 100km to check out the sights. Wyndham has a large port for loading cattle and ore. The view from Five Rivers Lookout is spectacular and I'm sure our pictures don't do it justice. Met some people who stayed at the top overnight.. what a view to wake up to.On our way back we detoured to see the boab prison tree. What a hard time those prisoners had. Check the pics for that. Went to look at some aboriginal rock art but unfortunately the roof rack decided to come loose so we had to unload the back of the car and spend an hour trying to tighten the darn bolts. Called into see Ivanhoe Crossing on the way back and that was ... read more

Day 20 – Thursday 19th July – Purnululu National Park We had left the safari tent window flaps half open to catch the magical early morning pre-dawn light. The birds were all squawking and chattering and we managed to persuade our delightful children to go to the camp kitchen to make us a cup of tea. We all slept like babies for most of the night, apart from when the local dingoes started howling like wolves (or should that be dingoes?), which was pretty eerie. Luckily the kids didn’t get scared and want to be rescued from their own tent (we didn’t know how close the dingoes were and how aggressive they would be in their own territory in the dark). Breakfast was at 7.15m, after the main tour group had left for the ... read more

Tuesday 3rdJuly 2012 We left Drysdale River Station at around 8:30 am. We’ve had some problems with the diesel sub tank, it is not pumping to the main tank. Also Dad and Mum’s vehicle has issues with the headlights. All these dusty corrugated roads are hard on the vehicle electrics. Around midday, Richard and Marion’s camper got a flat tyre passing through a water crossing with a bitumen bottom with a large pothole in the bitumen. Mum and Dad drove through ok but we got a flat in the same place as we came through, so we spent half an hour changing tyres. Ours has a bent rim too. We stopped at Bindoola Falls for lunch. It’s a short walk from the parking area (not signed as Bindoola Falls) to the lookout area. You look out ... read more

Wyndham 15th June 2012 In 1819 Phillip Parker King was the first European to visit the area. He was commissioned to find a river 'likely to lead to an interior navigation of the great continent'. King found the Cambridge Gulf, which he named after the Duke of Cambridge, and then sailed up a river which was subsequently named after him. Finding no fresh water on the mudflats, he departed. The town of Wyndham was established after finds of gold in Halls Creek by John Forrest in 1886 as the major port and trading station of the East Kimberley. By mid 1886, the town was booming, there were six pubs, one of which was a two-storey building. Ships brought in at least five thousand miners who headed off to the Halls Creek goldfields. It is known that ... read more
