Why would you want to drive across a desert to the ugliest rocky shoreline in Australia? Marg was talking to a couple of caravaners who complained about how boring the area is. They should have gone to Specsavers as the ad says! The 45 minute drive to Quobba Point is through a desert type area, but it is full of interest. Firstly you cross the Gascoyne River, well dry bed. Interestingly, this river provided Carnarvon with water year round for many years. It flows below the sand all year, and only on top of the sand during the wet season. There was a small pool at the edge of the river and two pelicans were taking a dip. Once again wild life share the road to the coast, and there is plenty of evidence that some ... read more

We were all looking forward to our time at Red Bluff after it had proven to be one of our most popular stops on our last trip and it sure did not disappoint. We lucked in with the most perfect campsite right on the beach, had several days of great surf, saw lots of marine life, caught lots of fish and enjoyed beautiful clear sunny days. What more could you ask for? How about a pod of whales swimming by close to shore just as you are setting up your camp? The girls and I enjoy climbing down the bluff to sit in one of the lagoon pools right on the verge of the surf break, providing a spectacular view of the surfing as well as a protected swimming spot. The girls enjoy collecting cowrie shells ... read more

Day 51 – Sunday August 19th – Quobba Blowholes When we woke up this morning the outside of the tent was covered in a heavy layer of dew. However it didn’t take too long for everything to dry out in the warm sunshine. Even though it is a Sunday and not a school day, Anna and Luke were forced into doing some diary writing and literacy work before we allowed ourselves a visit to the lagoon beach. This time the tide was quite high and the lagoon was full of beautifully clear turquoise water. We could see the reef and the kids got straight in to check out the coral. Anna came back out of the water saying she had seen a shark and was not going to go back in! Luke did a ... read more

Day 50 – Saturday 18th August – Lake McCloud Rest area (90kms north of Carnarvon) to Quobba Blowholes The rest area was an Ok spot for the night but quite noisy after around 5am once the road trains had started motoring up and down the Great Northern Highway. Some of the cheekier drivers tooted their horns at the travellers in the rest area as they passed, enjoying the sport of traveller waking. Anna and Luke wrote some postcards before we hit the road again that we were going to post in Carnarvon. We arrived in the sprawling town of Carnarvon at around 9.30 and found the visitors centre to get some information. Carnarvon and the area of Gascoyne is famous for growing bananas, grapes, cucumbers, tomatoes, mangoes, beans and grapefruits and these fruit and ... read more

20 June 2012 Well the rain held off overnight which we were all thankful for. The cat was back again last night, hangining around under the car waiting to see what leftovers wer on offer. I think it had enough to last a few days with the leftover scraps and bones from the roast lamb. This morning was looking very overcast and out on the horizon even darker clouds were looming. After breakfast I finished off the spread sheet for Steve before I took a drive down the road to try my luck at fishing off the rocks, or more precisely cliffs. A few bites this time but nothing to reel in :(. With the cliff some 10m plus above sea level i was confidant but cautious around the heavy swell and waves breaking around the ... read more

19 June 2012 Overnight was quite warm with only a sheet needed for sleeping, also there was no dew on the tent :). The sound of the surf was very loud and being only 50m or so from the beach over the dune you can even feel the vibration through the ground as the waves crash onto the beach. We had a visit from a cat last night, we're not sure if it's a feral or a farm cat, either way it looked like it was pretty hungry. But not tame enough to come within a couple of meters. After breakfast we took a walk along the beach, unfortunately this is a no fishing beach, you cannot even take shells from the beach, of which there are many, including some clam shells twice the size of ... read more
