These last couple of weeks I have been so busy actually travelling that there hasn’t been time to write a blog . I had visited Perth on my last trip to Australia and it was good to be back. With a 5 minute walk to the beautiful southern foreshore of the Swan River and a 30 minute walk to the ferry across to Elizabeth Quay, a bus stop and train nearby I was happy to use the excellent public transport system. Every I time I asked the bus driver about a ticket he gave me a concession ticket even though I don’t have a WA card and so for $1.40 I could have a bus and train ride to Mandurah 40 minutes away. Bargain ! Travelling for me is not just new places but seeing old ... read more

London, Hong Kong and South West Australia 10 September - 3 October 2018 4 October Hyden, Western Australia After a very good flight to Hong Kong during which we had plenty of free seats around us which made the journey more relaxing we took the airport express train and a bus to reach Nathan Road. This is a busy area near the Tsim Sha Tsui underground station, full of shops and restaurants on the ground floor of big 'mansions' or apartment blocks built around a courtyard. We could have booked an international style hotel of which there are many in the area where they have been built to replace some of the apartment blocks but in an effort to save money and gain insight into how ordinary people live in Hong Kong we checked in to ... read more

R: This is my third time in Perth, and Cate's 4th. The aim here was to catch up with as many people as possible in a short time. On Wednesday morning, we went out with Cate's cousins, who were kindly hosting us, to pretty Lake Leschenaultia, outside of Perth. It was a lovely, but cold morning, and the lake was full of school orienteering groups eagerly trying to win some sort of competition. We stopped for a flask of coffee and some biscuits and were quickly joined by two cheeky 28s - a type of parrot - who wanted biscuits or silverware. They were very tame and even hopped over our cousins arm to get the crumbs! In the afternoon, we met up with other members of the family, including a new arrival - baby Daisy, ... read more

A filling breakfast looking onto a beautiful outlook at Willoughby’s restaurant attached to the Airport Honolulu Hotel and then by courtesy shuttle to our flight. Our take-off took had us with a good view of Diamond Head and the surrounding ocean. We were fortunate to have a vacant seat next to each of us on the Honolulu-Sydney leg. We watched movies and tried to sleep, with little success, on this 11 hour flight. I watched, “Beirut”, “Breath”, “The Crimes that Bind” and “The Greatest Showman”, all of which I enjoyed. The adrenalin flowed as we flew over the Blue Mountains knowing we were in the greatest country in the world. However, the adrenalin quickly subsided at Sydney International Airport as the experience was not one would brag about to an international visitor. Disgrace, to put it ... read more

Well I just realised how long it’s been since the last blog. Now the hard part is remembering the what and where’s. We left Esperance and headed towards Ravensthorpe then on towards Hayden (wave rock). We camped about 80 kms before we got there so we would have plenty of time in the morning to explore. It was the first time for Ken, but I’ve been there a few times already. Our next stop was Corigin and one of Wendy’s favourite landmarks the Loch Ness monster. We then drove through Quairading, where there was some remains of the Rabbit Proof Fence. Then onto Cunderdin to have a meal at the Etimogah Pub. Only the meals were too dear so we went elsewhere. Next day we drove to Northam and onto Munderring NP passing a pie shop ... read more

Preparation over. Departure time arrived. Ready to Explore and Enjoy. Smiling BIG time. A little about Perth International Airport - There has been significant investment and planning for the future at the Perth Airport. It is envisaged that all commercial air services will operate from one precinct, Airport Central, offering a world-class airport experience. The International Departures has been transformed with expansion and refurbishment that has greatly improved the outbound international customer experience and now offers a far greater range of retail and dining choices, along with improved check-in, outbound immigration and security screening areas. The flight on EK425, Perth to Dubai (11hours), consisted of attempted sleep, eat (Scrambled Eggs), pee, movie (Death of Stalin), attempted sleep, pee, movie (Hostiles), pee, attempted sleep, pee, movie (Thank You For Your Service)... read more

Truth be told, I had put a deposit down on the Indian Pacific before I purchased my flights to and from Australia. Friends had taken the trip years ago, mentioned it to me, and after looking into it online I was sold. As it happens so often, a specific event determines the trip and everything else is built around it. Once again, this was the right way to do it. I loved this trip. The idea of a 4-day, 3-night train that crosses an entire continent was appealing. Doing it alone and meeting people on the train can be dicey with personality and chattiness, but each person I have met has been interesting. True, I found a group that I really enjoyed, and will write more about them later, but for now suffice it to say ... read more

And go I did. Traveling from SJ through SF, LA, Sydney to my final destination of Perth took me on a journey of 33 hours from door to door. I had arrived as far West as I could go. Heck, if I went any further West, I would have been East. Or is that just my jet lagged mind thinking it is clever when it should really simply sit there and look pretty? Either way, I am in the sunny land of Australia where I was welcomed with the hottest day in 2 years. So much for the email I received happily telling me that the summer had been mild. All 3 flights were nice. The longest leg, from LA to SYD had a passenger load that was very small, so I was able to move ... read more

Is this really it? Can we really be at the last stop on our Great Antipodean Adventure? The last 3 days before we return to good old Blighty? Well, the great Frank Sinatra once said, 'And now, the end is near', but not only is our trip coming to an end, so is this blog and 'my friends, I'lle say it clear'.....this is the final episode......a sadness to some perhaps, but a relief to many, I'm absolutely sure! But, before I end, we have three final days in Perth to enjoy and as I am writing this on our flights home via Singapore, I'd better get on with it, so I can grab some shut-eye! Our flight back from Learmonth, was a 90 minute jaunt, in a Fokker 100 which had barely 30 passengers on board ... read more

'Go West, Young Man', as the saying goes and today, we were off to our furthest westerly point on our sojourn in the general direction of home! Today, we fly to Perth and our fifth and final State of Western Australia. We are actually doing Perth in two bites, totalling 5 days, but with a further 5 days in the middle, in upstate Western Australia. So, this episode concentrates on 'bite' number one, our first two days in Perth. Our flight to Perth was scheduled to leave Alice Springs at 11.20 am, but as we needed to return our rental car by 9.00 am, we left our hotel around 8.30, dropped our keys in the Avis 'box', grabbed some brekkie and waited for the check in desk to open at 9.30. Sue was using her crutches ... read more
