Winds. Waves. Gibson's Steps. Singing old songs on the bus. Onward to Melbourne. We had one of those slow moving mornings. We eventually made it over to the 12 Apostles again to see if we could see them with a bit of sun on them...nope. We were outta luck. So we drove over to the Gibson's Steps and took a walk down to the beach and witnessed some awesome waves, saw lots of cuttlefish and driftwood and picked up a lot of debris that was strewn all over the beach. There were some people on our tour that wanted to take a helicopter ride to see all 12 Apostles so we had to wait for them before continuing on. I opted to save my $50 since the helicopter ride was just 7 minutes long. I might ... read more

Bloody, pelting rains! Wet, soggy and miserable. Makes hiking less fun. I woke up at 5AM...1.5 hours ahead of our wake up call. I think it was because the room was so bloody hot! It could also be because I was in bed by 10:30. :) I eventually popped outta bed...getting pretty good at getting down from the top bunk now without injuring myself. I washed up, packed up and had my usual breakfast of rice bubbles (rice krispies for you North Americans) and cornflakes and then my two pieces of peanut butter and honey toast. Yum! We set off from Halls Gap around 7:30 for a short hike to the Pinnacle and as described in the brochure there were some spectacular views to be seen. It probably would have been nicer if it wasn't so ... read more

Been here a week now. Overwhelming impression of the New South Wales countryside is that everything is sunbleached. The locals say that they desperately need rain, but that doesn't account for the earth which is ochre at its darkest, the sand which is unremittingly white and the rock which is beige, or lighter. The rangeland, which is what most of New South Wales is, is brown, no more like tawny. The ubiquitous eucalyptus ("gum") trees lose their bark as they mature so their trunks are white; their leaves are a strange silver-blue. The occasional conifer is a welcome sight! There are very few towns or even villages as you drive in the country - and we're not talking about the outback here. Even along the coast the roads are eerily empty and houses are few and ... read more

The last 2 days were really awesome! According to our new terms, they were not "best general" - they were spectacular! We started late due on Tuesday to errand duties in Geelong but when you get to this coastal road you immediately get to those lovely surfing beaches - huge waves (probably those were not so huge for the locals because it was a really fine day, but compared to our Mediterranean sea, they were!). We drove along the coast. stopping at every possible lookout for pictures, especially the beautiful Teddy's lookout where I managed to photograph a magpie bird for the first time. I admired those birds simple black&white beauty since NZ and finally one is posing for me. In some parts the road is carved out in the rocks right beside the ocean and ... read more

After I got back from my New Zealand trip Andy (housemate from Birmingham) came to Melbourne as part of his Oz trip and stayed with me for a bit. It was good to catchup with the old York roader again! We went to the footy, my first AFL game, which Andy's Aussie housemate in Brum had arranged for us! We also took a trip to the Dandenongs and to Torquay along the Great Ocean Road. The following weekend Dave was back in town before heading back to England. We spent two days on the Great Ocean Road, stopping at Port Campbell for the night. The weather was great and we even got to have brekkie on the beach:). And I drove all the way there and back (no I still haven't gotten my licence yet!) and ... read more

Whoohoo! ---A definite exclamation of celebration. I finished my last day of official duty social work and I am happy to report that TMC (The Magdalene Centre) is still functional and in one piece! Shortly thereafter (my final hours as duty social worker) we flew to Melbourne for the long Easter weekend. The Green House hostel provided accommodation for our two night stay in the city. It was in a good location but very impersonal and unclean-unlike the world renowned Backpack Oz. I wouldn’t recommend it. Nevertheless, we had a good time touring the city. We found that Melbourne folks are not as friendly as the individuals in Adelaide. This could have something to do with the fact that Melbourne is a much larger city and moves at a quicker pace. Granted, population estimates from 2001 ... read more
