Got Cradle Mountain and paid $60 for a 2 month tourist pass to all the parks in Tassie. This includes free parking and shuttle busses. Left the car pal at Dove lake at 1130 and trogged up to Marion’s lookout then up to a snow patch for luncH. Back down via “Wombat poo”. Went to the town pub for dinner and had a 300gm steak. Back to our lodgings to phon ethe guys at Horse Guards to wish them well. Weather today about 15 - 18c on the walk which was just over 5 miles and up to about 1242 m. An enjoyable walk with great views. Even got to see 2 wild echinoderm and 2 wombats. Still no hordes of kangaroos but we are not out and about at the right time between dusk and ... read more

Arrived in Sheffield at about 0645. We had breakfas, a full Aussie, then went fo a drive and a recce of the town before booking in to our great Airbn. We checked out the tourist office and got some details of local walks the went to the town war memorial to lay a poppy for a Pete Higgs. We met an ex Green Jacket from the Malaya era. We then took a drive to visit a wildlife park and fed the free roaming kangaroos. Afternoon tea then back to Sheffield. We spent a bit too long chatting to Jan and Peter and we just managed to get a take out Chinese as everywhere else was shut and the town was in darkness. It has been about 25c today. Loverly blue skies.... read more

One of our first trailer testing weekends involved a trip to the fabulous Lake Pedder. There were a few minor issues in getting underway and the bus found it heavy going when ascending steep hills but otherwise it was a good (albeit slow) trip. The weather forecast was almost perfect (low to mid 20's and slight winds) and we had expectations of some paddling opportunities. Lake Pedder (including the canal that links it to Lake Gordon) is Australia's largest freshwater lake. Our two kayak trips, however, only allowed us to cover a very small corner of Pedder! Of course, we also found time to visit and walk across the Gordon Dam, one of Tasmania's highest dams plus visit the Serpentine Dam, which provides the spillway for the two lakes. The ex-Hydro town of Strathgordon now has ... read more

Hi for my first blog. I hope this finds everyone easily enough. Well my case is packed but Bryan has that job tomorrow morning to think about what he might take. Luckily we don’t leave until approximately 12:45. So this trip we have my good friend and Bryans sister Pauline coming with us from Tasmania, then once we arrive in Melbourne my girlfriend from the Riverland in South Australia joins us as Pauline’s companion as we all know how expensive it is when you want to go solo and they add those single traveller charges. Then we head off to Cambodia on Thai Airways. We have a stop over in Thailand’s Bangkok before heading on to Cambodia’s Siem Reap. Arriving at 08:30 after what I’m sure will be a sleepless night. We aren’t sure what we ... read more

Arrival was very late on the 3rd. Just before midnight. I was depressed because my luggage somehow got lost in Melbourne. It was supposed to be a simple flight, 55 mins. NOT. Of course if anything can go wrong when you check in a luggage it happens to us! We never check in luggage because of the nightmares. Sure enough, flight delayed, Everyone's luggage gets put off the cancelled plane but mine, which sleeps in Melbourne while I take off to Hobart Tasmania and arrive after midnight. How bad can it be? I start taking inventory about what I lost. Medication, second pair of glasses, 2 x GPS's, cables, clothes, sigh.... Not to mention 16 hours in transit. Next morning. I get up with no news about the luggage, so I head off to the local ... read more

Whilst in Melbourne I caught up with others that o had met while traveling. I landed in Hobart and have started the hard task of looking for work. In between filling in application forms I have had a few breaks. I have had plenty of time to do exciting things such as checking out the botanical gardens in Hobart. Most recently I and some friends I have made in the hostel and I went for a spontaneous road trip. We headed out from Hobart to mole creek campsite. After a night in the car we headed out to cradle mountain. When we arrived we discovered that it was snowing periodically. We decided to hike up to a view point over the ranges, then to hike back to the visitor centre. While walking down we came across ... read more

I have always found crossing the equator to the southern hemisphere quite fascinating. So far, I have been to Kenya, Peru and Australia. Kenya is pretty much on the equator and does not really have the kind of seasonal differences that make life in southern hemisphere different. My previous trip to Australia primarily centered around Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. In the middle of 2016, I made a trip with my family to Tasmania which is by far, the southernmost part of earth I have been in all my life. Our initial itinerary included two weeks in New Zealand as well. That would have meant going further down south. But that was not to be. Perhaps some other time. Part of the reason I wanted to make this trip to Tasmania were because of some amazing pictures ... read more

Had this little getaway booked for a few months...got a great deal through Timeshare and cheap airfares so why not? We had a very early 6.05a.m. flight from Melbourne so were off by 7.30a.m. in Hobart, couldn't book into our accom so decided to head to Richmond to check out this beautiful historical little town, a cool crisp morning so lovely for walking around Richmond. Richmond is quite an iconic site and only about 25klms north east of Hobart in the Coal River Valley region and that bridge is recognisable all over Australia. John spotted the bakery so we opted for Curried Scallop pies and coffee for breaky. Later in the afternoon booked into our accommodation at the Ramada Seven Mile Beach Resort, were pleasantly surprised a lovely three bedroom, two bathroom apartment set on a ... read more

So tie me to an anthill, smear my ears with jam and call me Benedict Arnold if you must but I'm going to place my head firmly on the traitor's chopping block. For what my opinion is worth (not much I assume), USA AOK, is the most beautiful on this rock, if through nothing else other than its sheer, raw diversity. If you prefer to narrow down the criteria a touch then a few other sovereignties come into the reckoning. Alpine? How do you turn you nose up at Canada, Nepal, Norway or New Zealand (South Island). Perhaps architecture is your poison. From this humble man's opinion, France is top of the pops with my left field challenger (plus this makes me sound as though I've been around), Yemen. BUT!!! If coastline is your barometer of ... read more

Since returning from our previous adventure, we have been thinking about what we might do next. After careful consideration, we decided to add a trailer to the bus and put kayaks on top. A tinny with a small outboard motor was a consideration early on but getting it off and on the trailer was an issue and there seemed to be lots of rules about licenses with each of the different states having different regulations. So kayaks seemed like the best idea. We had some minor issues with the amount of "stuff" that we had inside the bus on our last trip. The walkway was sometimes a little congested and it usually meant that we had to "unload" the bus when we stopped to have easy access to all parts of our home away from home. ... read more
