We woke to a wet and overcast day again today. We set off early to make our way down to Port Arthur. It was quite a long but scenic drive, it was a shame that it was raining and the road was very windy in parts. Port Arthur was fabulous. We took advantage of hiring the audio kits which gave great insight into the times of the convicts, how they lived and survived. The grounds are beautiful and green. The cottages are very well set out and interesting. We took the boat cruise out to the island of the graves and Poer island, where the younger male convicts lived. They were kept separated from the older males for their own safety. On the way home we visited The Remarkable cave, this is a fantastic large cave. ... read more

Sea days are wonderful. This one was a busy. The Cruise Critic get together was a great success. About 50 guests showed up as well as Captain Visser, the Cruise Director, Hotel Manager and Beverage Manager. We socialized and had a good exchange of ideas about the up coming ports. The Beverage manager offered a private Happy Hour for our group and we will certainly take advantage of his offer. The seas were calm and the skies clear so my next stop was the pool for a dip and some reading. After lunch on deck I changed and went to Team Trivia. We have a fun team but really did not do well at all. We’re just lulling the competition into a false sense of security. How many time zones are there in China? Stay tuned. ... read more

Sunday 14 th March Lazy start and eventually got our act together to go to Port Arthur. Our little hire car a Nissan Tiida not a model we get in the UK but looks like a bigger posher Micra. A beautiful sunny day to start with not a cloud in the sky and forecast 25 degrees. We set off and stopped on route at a waterside café for breakfast. A sea eagle flying around and the mysterious sea boat so called by Wendy flying in the sky. (She meant sea plane). Then made our way to Port Arthur going past warning signs for Tasmanian devils, (photo to follow) Port Arthur was a penal colony established after Napoleonic wars and because it was on an island no real chance of escape. Na nasi poti je ostal neobdelan osrednji del otoka in zahodna obala, The Overland Track, Mount Ossa in Cradle Mountain, ki ponujajo 90km urejenih pes poti za pohodnike. Moja sanje se niso uresnicile in v ta del Tasmanije nisem niti pokukala. Pristale smo na letaliscu Hobart na jugu otoka po 9. uri. zjutraj. Letalisce je podobno Brniskemu, zato sem se kar dobro pocutila. Ze pri pristajanju letala sem pod seboj zagledala zeleno obalo s stevilnimi zalivi in otoki, ki je ... read more

Tuesday the 10th was the day we flew out to Tasmania. We spent the day packing our stuff, and weighing it to make sure we didn’t go over the 15kg limit for the plane. We were flying Tiger Airways, a discount Australian airline, and wanted to make sure everything would go according to plan. We’d heard some horror stories about flights being cancelled as late as boarding time, but that’d be out of our control (so no point worrying about it). Hillary and I made it to the airport plenty early, and our flight was even on time! After a short one-hour flight, we were finally in Hobart! Wednesday was the first day of our tour. We booked with a local company called Under Down Under. They had several options for exploring Tasmania, so we signed ... read more

Last night it rained, and rained, and rained and rained and rained! The wind was also really strong - I just love camping! I woke up at 1.30am to the sound of the wind and also because i was so cold! Chris and i both woke up loads throughout the night! I was wearing 2 layers, even 2 pairs of socks but i was still cold! Apparently it's like this in the winter but it's MID-SUMMER!!!! I can't believe our luck - again! But we found out this morning that we were the envy of the other campers as our tent didn 't move! - alot of them had half collapsed in the night! Chris went for a run in the rain whilst i stayed wrapped up in the warmth of my sleeping bag! After breakfast ... read more

We headed away from Friendly Beaches towards Port Arthur, stopping for some berry picking at Sorell Fruit Farm along the way. We decided we needed at least a couple of nights in a caravan park to clean up, so rang ahead to try and book somewhere. The caravan park in Port Arthur was full, but we managed to get into the caravan park at White Beach, about 10km from Port Arthur. The park was packed and teaming with kids and quite nice except it was the first time on this trip that we also had to pay extra for showers and to use the barbecues in a caravan park. A very cold and brisk southwesterly wind as well as occasional showers made it a very cold stay at White Beach. We also didn't have an ideal ... read more

Part 1 Wednesday 10th December 2008 Today was the start of Cedric, Marie, Martin and I's Tasmania Road trip. I'd advertised for travel buddies on the hostel noticeboard and today we picked up our Nissan Tiida and drove around Hobart with me at the healm turning on windscreen wipers to indicate and attempting to drive the wrong way up one way streets in an attempt to leave Hobart and start our journey North along the Tasman Peninsula to Port Arthur. Once I had aquainted myself with Tilda the Tiida we had a lovely drive through green rolling countryside and past some nice beaches to Eaglehead Point where we got a nice view of the coast and then onto Port Arthur. Port Arthur was a Penal settlement - for those too hard for Sydney's jails. It was ... read more

On Friday 9/19 we spent most of the day at Port Arthur Historical Site. This was a penal colony from 1830 to 1877. There were many interesting ruins to see, and many stories to learn. The tour guides put a positive spin on the idea of reforming the prisoners sent over from Great Britain, but the real story was in the bad folks who ended up there. Port Arthur was for repeat offenders and escapees, so it was not a great place if you happened to be a criminal in that era. Looking at the bright side, however, a few industrious and reformed prisoners ended up colonizing a pretty wonderful country here. Dean went back for the Historical Ghost Tour in the evening to hear a few more graphic stories from the prison days. On the ... read more
