With access to a car (thanks Les) and some camping equipment borrowed from friends (thanks Fox and Sam), we decided to head to Tasmania to see some of Australia’s rugged sights. We set sail on the Spirit of Tasmania, a huge ferry, at 9pm from Melbourne. The journey was to take 9.5 hours so we booked a recliner chair in the hope of getting some sleep and prayed it wouldn’t be too rough as the waters between Australia and Tasmania are notoriously choppy. The crossing was calm and we managed to have a few hours sleep before we disembarked for our Tasmanian adventure. Our first stop, Launceston, is the second largest town in Tasmania and 80km south of our docking port. Daniel’s cousin, Rob, lives there but he and his family were on holiday on the ... read more

DAY 122 After 3 nights free camping in the River and Rocks Campground, we were moving on today, it seemed again that half of Australia was on the move, 4x4’s Campers, boats, and trailers, and just about every time of fishing rod we had ever seen were leaving the camp site. It had been the same yesterday but by lunchtime we were told that it had filled back up again. Our plan is to be back in Cradle Mountain on Wednesday 11th March for the final 3 days as it was just so beautiful and full of wildlife we just feel that we need to see it again before sailing back to Melbourne on Saturday night arriving Sunday morning. This of course will be to the detriment of other parts of Tasmania, there is so ... read more

Well it didn't rain last night - woohoo! We got up had breakfast, got chris to eat watermelon! Then headed up the East coast towards Swansea. We camped in a free campsite in Mayfield Bay, right on the beach. Only had a wc but that's all you need for one night! We then drove to Freycinet National Park. All the National Parks charge a fee to enter, $22 for 24 hours or $53 for up to 8 weeks. We went to Honeymoon Bay which was quite small, had a bite of lunch and then drove to Wineglass Bay car park. From there we wlaked along the 6km trail, up to the viewing point and then down to the Wineglass Bay itself. It's a long hard walk, up paths, rocks, down slopes but all worth it when ... read more

... read more

We headed from St Helens down towards Freycinet National Park where we were hoping to stay even though we knew it would be difficult to get accommodation. Accommodation in the park near Coles Bay is allocated by a ballot system drawn back in August, so we knew the only possibilities were a caravan park in Coles Bay, which were few and far between, or camping at Friendly Beaches, which was free (it only had long drops) but very limited in the number of sites. But before we got that far, we stopped at the Spiky Bridge near Swansea, and then at Douglas-Apsley National Park . We were keen to stop here because we had also stopped here during our previous Tasmania holiday in November 2003 and had a photo of Annelies going for a swim in ... read more

Part 3 Friday 12th December 2008 Woke up today and I had breakfast all alone on Richardson Beach. It was very peaceful - this is the life!! Today we climbed Mount Amos which looked over our campsite. What an amazing but extremely difficult and quite dangerous climb to the top. No wonder they call these mountains the Hazards!! We were on all fours at one point and slipping and sliding about. I fell once which was quite scary but the view at the top made it all seem more than worthwhile. One one side was Wineglass Bay (an even better view than yesterday) and the other side was Coles Bay. Stunning. We were so proud of ourselves to get there (although today did highlight just how unfit I have got since leaving Scotland) and we just ... read more

Part 2 Thursday 11th December I woke up to the amazing Australian morning chorus today - VERY noisy but nice. Had a quick brekkie out the boot of the car then we set of up North along the East Coast over creeks and past vineyards, up winding steep mountain roads to be met with the most amazing bay views....the sun was shining and I was a happy girl! We drove from Port Arthur passing through Swansea to Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park - our final destination for the day! It was so beautiful there and we were so lucky to get a camp spot right on the beach looking over the Hazard Mountains (little did I know we'd be climbing one of them the next day). Once we'd set up camp we did a pretty ... read more

Breakfast at McD's was followed by a trip on the East Coast Trail. First to Swansea and the Freycinet Peninsula. We drove along the east coast and round the loop to the south facing peninsula around Oyster Bay. We stopped at the Freycinet National Park Office and purchased our park ticket. We also did a short walk to Coles Bay to take a look at Richardson's Beach which extends north of Dixon Point for 800 metres. It is a narrow high tide beach with 200 metre wide sand flats. It's backed by a row of trees then cleared slopes gradually rising to 160 metres. A very beautiful spot. We returned to the car and entered the Wineglass Bay Car Park which is inside the National Park. The park is named for the French navigator, Louis de ... read more
