It wouldn't be a trip to Victor Harbor without a ride on the horse drawn tram. The ride goes along the 600metre causeway from the mainland to Granite Island, it takes about 20 minutes and is an idyllic way to experience a remarkable peice of coast. The trams history reaches back 150 years, when the first horse drawn wagons hauled freight and passengers along the broad gauge railine linking Goolwa to Port Elliott- Australia's first public railway. On another bleak day we rode down to Cape Jervis, where the ferry leaves to go across to Kangaroo Island. The packing up process doesn’t take t long and we head out, via the seafood shop on the front to purchase a lobster. The country we travelled was flat and easy to maintain a steady speed of 95/100kmh. We stopped at a park at Meningie, a nice wayside on the journey through. We set sail again after our cuppa with Milang, in our sights, this is the Fleurieu Peninsula close to the Victor harbour area and the a possible excursion to Kangaroo Island. The GPS kept us on track, yet at one point we had some doubts, because it turned us off the highway towards a ferry crossing. Oh BOY! 31 03 2010 We got up early to get on with the drive and so by 0630 we were on the road. We knew from the map that this next part it was going to be a long boring road. It was a full moon and a bit misty to start. The best part though was the great sunrise and the trees in silhouette. Wendy helpfully fell asleep as it was mind numbingly straight road and featureless apart from the road kill kangaroos. Eventually we stopped at the one hick one building place called salty creek. It was a fishing and hunting place. There were stuffed animal head trophies and pictures of fishermen everywhere. To my surprise the waitress was from Finland. I returned to the Heysen trail Sunday (23/08/2009) for the Waitpinga to Victor Harbor leg. This section was about 19km and took four and a half hours on a beautiful 20 degree centigrade day. About eight kilometres of this walk was along the cliffs not far from Victor Harbor which were inceredibly dramatic and spectacular. Unfortunately I took my small camera and the batteries ran out so missed some great shots. After a brief stop for lunch at lovely Kings Beach we began a tough and at times unpleasant trudge up from the beach before following a couple of roads while battling a strong headwind. Eventually we entered a wooded area between two farms which was extremely overgrown so some dodging and weaving was necessary before finally emerging on Waitpinga road. Hello All, Carissa and I have recently returned from the Byron Bay mud, I mean Bluesfest held over Easter. What is it with us and music festivals? It seems we have an uncanny ability, in the words of one of the performers, Mr Tim Finn, to 'bring the weather with you'. That being said Bluesfest did not dissapoint and Carissa, myself, and Rhys enjoyed many of the acts including Ben Harper, Michael Franti and the unstoppable John Butler. Rhys and I also managed a fantastic surf at Lennox Head on the way to Byron, despite risking our lives getting in and out of the surf over the rocks. It was worth the cuts and bruises.
