Today Wilf and Sheila took us to Victor Harbour. It's about 2 hours South of Adelaide. We went up to the Bluff and walked to the top - great views! We then went into the town for a bite of lunch before going for a walk. We walked across the footbridge onto Granite Island. This is where you can see the small penguins at dusk. There are guided tours and you can also go on a horse driven carraige onto the Island. Victor Harbour is also known for whale watching. Nice day out! After we left we drove down to Port Eliott to see the view of the bay, called Horse Shoe Bay. Then we stopped at the next bay along, where all the surfers were - some pretty good waves! On the way home we ... read more

The pictures will speak for themselves, but we have granite Island with the tram pulled by a Clydesdale, and the markets. We also have Smallville a miniature village complete with churches, mills, cricket field, etc. Well worth a visit. You can also have a meal at the tearooms; we had a very good Devonshire tea. A very pleasant morning. The Village is situated on Adelaide Rd, number 50, and is only 4.2Km from the city centre As recently as Monday the 29th Dec. a miniature railway was also opened at the village. It is still a work in progress. ... read more

A small journey of 64 Km one way took us today to Cape Jervis. This was a pleasant drive to beautiful Valleys and the scenery was spectacular. Cape Jervis is a small village and has nothing to offer except that it is the departure point to take the ferry to Kangaroo Island. We spend a good hour watching the cars been loaded onto the ferry, it is really a skill to put all those cars into the right place, and they are so close that the side mirrors have to be closed in. From Cape Jervis we decided to take a detour and visited 2 small towns; Normansville and Yankalilla. The first one -Normansville- was very pretty with buildings dating back from the 18th century. The second one- Yankalilla- was the scene in 1997 of the ... read more

Today we did a day trip to Aldinga Beach, a beautiful little town approximately 50 Km, north of Victor Harbor; we traveled via Willunga, another pleasant little place. it was really pleasant and reminded us of Broome, before Broome became too commercialized, you can take your car on the Beach, all is still very peaceful and mother nature has not been too damaged by men.- See photos- We stopped for Lunch at McLaren Vale and visited the Almonds Train- see photo- On the way back we stopped at the cheese factory “Alexandria Cheese factory”, some very nice cheese were on offer, but I am still partial to the Margaret River region cheeses in WA. As you can see from the photos, Puppy is our constant travel companion and seems to be enjoying the trip too! Tomorrow ... read more

Spent Boxing Day at a place called Granite Island at Victor Harbor looking for wild penguins. We had almost given up seeing one when someone showed us where they had seen one. They were hiding in one of the burrows as they only really come out at dusk. You could smell it more than see it!!! We also enjoyed lunch in the town as well. It was quite busy as it is a popular tourist spot in the summer. We were then invited to a BBQ at one of Adrian's sisters friends - lots more food and drink and games. ... read more

We arrived on schedule on the 22nd December as planned. The road from Strathalbyn to Victor Harbor is incredible in more ways then one. It is almost like riding a camel, as well as been narrow, winding etc. We found this astonishing, the South Australian Government should really do something about this, at one point in the journey I was almost seasick, it also made me appreciate how good the roads are in Western Australia. The faster roads such as the Highways are much better of course, but when you follow a tourist drive you do not necessarily want to travel on motorways. Strathalbyn itself, as a town, did not appeal to us, it was open to hoons at night, and the motorbikes were the flavor of the night, talking to people at the caravan park, ... read more

Hi everyone We moved down to Port Elliot on Sunday, for 4 nights, and once again were beside our friends Trevor and Margaret. They left today for Robe, but we are staying on, as tomorrow we have booked to do a 6 hour cruise from Hindmarsh Island to the Caroong, past the Murray River mouth. It is an interesting area as the barrages make this area salt water, with the fresh water area from the Murray River much lower, and almost dried up down here. So much water has been used up stream for irrigation and water supply that Lake Alexandrina is very low now. Yesterday we took Trevor and Margaret with us and explored the lower Fleurieu Peninsula. We went down most side roads, went to Cape Jervis where the very expensive ferry goes to ... read more

Melbourne Cup Day November 4, 2008 It was a fine day in Victor Harbor. The weather was perfect and because it is the day of the Melbourne Cup (a bigger deal in Australia than the Kentucky Derby is in the U.S.) the town was filled with a festive atmosphere. We had heard that the whole country shuts down for the race, but if it does it’s to party all day. Last minute betting was going on everywhere we looked, the hotels were having fancy luncheons and the ladies were decked out in race day finery despite the fact that they were 600 kilometers from Melbourne. The excitement was certainly contagious and although we didn’t bet we did partake in eating the street vendor food and people watching. We were going to bet on the horse “Efficient” ... read more

We're just at the ferry terminal waiting for our ferry to depart in about half an hour to Kangaroo Island. Unfortunately the weather is a bit poo and the sea looks extremely choppy even in port so I expect I'll be a nervous wreck (shouldn't say that word) the whole crossing. So far the road trip has been lovely but once again i'm using a computer that doesn't take piccies so people will have to wait! On Monday we arrived at this lovely little fishing village called Port Fairy that had lots of lovely people in it (e.g. we asked the barman in a pub how much it cost to have a game of pool. He told us $3 and got the money out of the till and gave it to us! Then a woman put ... read more

Today we started our Kangaroo Island tour. Our first stop was Victor Harbor, a famous spot in South Australia for surfing and partying! We went to Middleton beach and got changed into our wetsuits- always exciting! However not always flattering! We then got given our surf boards and went for a warm up jog and stretches on the sand. We had some training on how to surf and practised the technique on our boards on the sand. We also learnt a bit about rips so that we could recognise them and what to do if we got caught in one. Then it was time to hit the water- we were so excited. Me and Laura tried to stay together but after she winded me with her surf board we thought it best to spread out ... read more
