We've been in Brisbane for the last few days. Although this city doesn't hold a lot of sightseeing attractions itself (other than the typical museum, art galleries) we've made the most of our time here. Saturday, we checked out the south bank of the city and watched a free aerobics class going on in this artificial lagoon created (complete with beach and lifeguard) on the site of the former Expo 88. We also checked out the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Most australians would say they havn't been there since the age of 5 but I figured since we came down all this way, I was determined to see a live koala before my very eyes. random koala fact - baby koalas are called joeys. We weren't done with australian fauna as sunday, mom and I went ... read more

21st March 2005. Brisbane, Australia. Am so glad I decided to spend first night of Big Adventure in Brisbane. Everything is unfamiliar but still Australian, still understandable. Spent yesterday and most of today with Jessie G, my old school pal, who's a Brisbanite, wandering about the city. The public transport system puts Cairns to shame. I don't think you can go three minutes without spotting a bus going somewhere, and when one was actually five minutes late there was a lot of consternation amongst the locals, whereas in Cairns we pretty much plan our schedules around the guarantee that the bus' will be late. We stayed the night in a house-cum-backpacker hostel I found on the net, pretty nice with pool and all for only $20 each, but we didn't get in (after original check-in) until ... read more

Well, who would have believed it, but my big day finally arrived. After a last-minute, all-night, panicked packing frenzy, I found myself at the airport, well ahead of schedule, yet still, in the end, seemingly without the time for proper goodbyes. Mostly, perhaps, because it really did not seem like goodbye, not then. But later, as the plane taxied off with Janis Joplin's "Leaving on a Jet plane" crooning dramatically from my mp3 player, it finally occurred to me that the view outside my window was not one which I would be seeing again anytime soon, nor those dearly beloved faces or comfortably familiar streets. In short, it all finally became shockingly real. I was not just leaving for a brief vacation, but a small lifetime in itself… months, possibly a year, perhaps (dare I say ... read more

My mom and I have made it to Australia after the long-haul flight on Singapore Airlines with stops at Vancouver, Seoul, Singapore and we finally arrived at Sydney. For those of you thinking of doing long-haul flights, I highly recommend Singapore Airlines as you'll be entertained for hours on end with your choice of over 50 movies to watch at any time (Malaysian only had twelve that ran regardless of you watching or not). Colin and Val, a couple that we were with on our European tour two years ago, picked us up from the airport and gave us the quick 1 1/2 day tour of sydney and the surrounding area. Sydney really reminds me of Vancouver with its location next to the ocean and cosmopolitan nature. In the rain, we toured around the harbour and ... read more

Spent the past 3 days on a camping trip in the Northern Territory outback. Although we booked the budget trip, we found ourselves upgraded to the "Safari In Style" luxury version. We daren't let on to our friends on the budget trip that while they were collecting our firewood, we were sipping champagne and watching the sunset. Had a fantastic time visiting Ayers Rock and the surrounding canyons. Karl refused to believe in "all that aboriginal rubbish" and made me climb the rock with him at 7am. The view from the top was amazing, but the climb/slide back down was very scary. By the time we reached the bottom, 2 hours later, it was 110F and went up to 140F one day. The SIS tour continued to Alice Springs while we hitched a ride back to ... read more

I have managed to land a 4 week contract working as a Financial Modeller. I will basically be building models in Excel and reviewing existing models. Starting tomorrow (Wednesday), and there is free booze EVERY Friday after work......! We went to the St. Paddy's Day parade here last Saturday, it was good craic with all the Irish coming out of the woodwork. They even had St. Patrick himself......on the back of UTE! Only in Oz ! Bought a crappy car yesterday to get us around (1986 Silver Holden Barina - now names the Silver Bullet), and used it to collect Andy and Anto from the airport last night, so now we are 4! Weather is nice, a cosy 28 today. ... read more

Hey, hope everyone is well. We are finally leaving Australia behind (though I guess only for a few weeks). Its been a great jaunt up the East Coast with lots of great memories. Everyone said to me before I went away "oh you know Ade, the time will fly by". I always replied with "yeah yeah" without realising it ain't 'alf true. Crikey. Am even starting to forget about some of the places we've been to and have to resort to looking through photos to remind us. Since last time we spent a few days in the Whitsundays. I'd like to say we did a massive sailing adventure tour, taking in the reef. But we didn't. We did however go on a sailing day trip (and had the BEST BBQ IN THE WORLD) Went snorkelling for ... read more

We signed the lease this morning, and moved into our appartment in Auchenflower. It's a beauty. Our bedroom has an ensuite and it's own little balcony. The lads will be sharing a room and have the use of the second bathroom. There is a decent sized lounge and seperate dining and kitchen areas. Off the living area is a huge balcony where we can play 5 a-side soccer !! It's fully furnished which is the business, and we have a garage downstairs for a car. There is also outdoor tables downstairs and a BBQ which anyone can use. We have a little park beside us for chilling in, and the train station is literally 1 minute walk away.... read more

We arrived in Cairns on Joey's birthday, (Great birthday present eh? I planned it that way...........HONEST!!!). Breaking with our skinflint tradition, we went straight to a hostel as finding a campsite would have been really difficult. As it turns out it's a good job we did as two days after arrival, a cyclone hit the coast just north of Cairns and brought with it five days of continual heavy rain, Oz style. Hostel life was a fair eye opener for me (Mark) as I've never stayed in one before, it was pretty good actually, apart from the single bunk beds!! 15th of March, having just bought a camper van, (not as anyone's interested but it's a Toyota Tarago 1984, 2L petrol) we left Cairns to work on a dairy farm/nursery for three weeks, the van's absolutely ... read more

Hey all, hope you are all doing well. Its been great to hear from those that have left comments or emailed me back. Our fumbling up the east coast of australia has brought us to the city of Mackey. Lots done so here we go. after leaving summer, sorry, Byron Bay we made our way to surfers paradise. sounds nice you may think. we thought the same. its basically like tenerife moved on mass to Oz. loads of backpackers out to try the surf out, which actually isn't that good anyway. the most surfy we got was to go to a life saving club and get food. Met a nice couple though and we shared travelling tales and witty, amusing anecdotes. How we laughed. Leaving the next day things improved as we headed north. Stopped off ... read more
