The other day my day started not so good, and it should be sufficient to say that I found it a tad hard to be welcoming and smiling to all the customers on the boat. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I had students that day, which gave me lots of good opportunities to yell at them and roll my eyes for no good reason. On our first dive for the day the students needed to do a compass swim. As I have earlier had students’ watches interfere with compasses and a few students on their way to PNG, I decided to make my students take their watches off and leave them on the boat. Which of course sounds like the most reasonable decision. However, things were a bit hectic on the back deck, since the sea was ... read more

I have no number of how many times some customer on the boat will tell me, with envy blazing out of their eyes, that I am so lucky to do what I am doing. And every time I will patiently reply that in the end of the day this is a job as every other job. Sometimes there are good days, but too often there are not so good days, and sometimes you are just left to ponder why you didn't go for the nice office job... But, when the going is good the going is very good... or something like that. When you have a good day, or a good dive, the whole world is a better place, and you cannot think of one single good reason why you ever would want to give this ... read more

Hello hello!, I think it's about that time, it's been a couple of weeks, and i have things to write about. Wild, crazy things. Not really. So i was expecting my emails to become a little more bland now as i'm not really travelling about, i'm staying put and trying to get a job, nothing exciting, but, i feel pretty positive about what i get to write about as i really love cairns and think i will enjoy my time here. So, back the truck up. I'm in cairns. I think i ended off my last email by saying that. That, and that i hated typing and never wanted to type again, which as you can see is untrue. Another thing that i said that is also now untrue, is that i was enjoying job hunting. ... read more

So, just thought I would share some images with the world and all my friends of how my life is... Envious anyone?? Hmm... on second thought... this whole uploading business does take ages, and I haven't had dinner yet (yes, I am ruled by my tummy) so I guess I will wait with more uploading untill another day (a better day).... read more

Well, it's a new day, and Kat has received some new job offers. Not only do I have a job offer from Vietnam, which were covered in past post, but I also just today received a job offer from Cambodia. The problem here is that although I am thrilled to have received these offers, and would lurve to work and live in both Vietnam or Cambodia for some time, the pay is rather bad. Well, for living in Cambodia or Vietnam the pay is very good, but taking into account that I will have to repay a quite hefty student loan at home as well as owing money hither and tither it is not really doable. Which do kill me!!!! And of course, I am in some dialouges with a couple of diveshops in the Philippines, ... read more

Today I have stopped. Not stopped anything in particular. Just stopped. As in being still. Looking at the planes in the sky and dream of getting on one of them. I think the girls in the travel agency thinks I am a bit of a sad nutcase. Every week I come in and ask for a price to a different destination. Sometimes I come by several times within the same week. I think they think I will never get anywhere. But they are WRONG. Sometime soon I will also be flying through the sky. To foreign lands and all that.... read more

Sweating... Well, i guess it's not new, i've been doing it for a couple weeks now. I think i mentioned it in my last email. Well, that was a little further south, and now i'm further north, and as you go north you get more tropical and more humidity (oh so much) and therefore you get more sweat. So, more north i say. Where am i? Cairns, most likely my last stop in Australia before i head to the oh-so awesome southeast asia. I arrived in Cairns last night from Airlie beach, which i went to from Rainbow Beach, where i did Fraser island, where i went to from Noosa. Whoa, slow down. So, my last email i think i had arrived in Noosa? Or was i just bitching about brisbane? Well, anyway, i will start ... read more

It is just a couple of hours left for me here on the north-eastern coast of Australia. I am currently sitting in the internet cafe of Gilligan's Backpackers Resort in Cairns. This is probably the flashiest backpacker's place I have been to so far. Very good and clean rooms, well trained staff etc. Still it somehow feels wrong. I think it is because I'm a bit old fashioned and have this image of backpacking being a bit filthy thing. But as anyone travelling around Australia can probably tell, backpacking is moving to the next level: backpackers appear with Samsonite suitcases and beautycases, pulling their luggage on trolleys behind them - still a minority but probably being a harbinger of the next backpacking generation. What else is there to tell about Cairns? From my point of view ... read more

Wow! I can't believe how HUGE Australia is. I don't know if I gabbed on this fact the last time, but it's enormous and I'm having a most difficult time fitting in just one side of Queensland into 2 weeks. I guess I shouldn't expect to see too much in that much time. I would think that if I did 2 weeks along the upper east coast of the US, I wouldn't see all that much either. *sigh* Since the last entry, I've gone from Sydney to Noosa, which is in the middle of Queensland. I went to Fraser Island, which is reportedly the largest sand island in the world and has more sand than the Sahara! I guess I wouldn't really argue with those statements since many people lost their cameras to the sand and ... read more

Hiya everyone, Sun 7th Nov At last we finally reach Cairns which is in the north part of Queensland. This will be our last stop before flying back to Sydney. We find a hostel for $14 a night so very cheap but why this one won us over was because we could have a free dinner at a busy pub in town evrynight we stayed. I was plesantly suprised by Cairns because i feared it would be like Brisbane where i didn't like but thankfully it was far from it. The hostel is ok but what do you expect for the money but one good thing is that the kitchen is spotless. We dumped our stuff and headed in search of a supermarket for some dinner. It is so humid here and there is just no ... read more
