Our last day in Trinity Beach and Tux and I decided to head north to Port Douglas along the scenic Captain Cook Highway. For long parts the road goes alongside sandy beaches. There was also much evidence of fires along the side of the road. Port Douglas was a lovely unspoilt resort with no high rise apartment/hotels and a 4 mile long sandy beach down one side. When Tux and I climbed a walk to a lookout point, all you could see were palm trees and no buildings. While we were there, parked up by the marina, the heavens opened so we had to dive into a Hogs Breath bar for a beer! This marina was also being used to shuttle passengers off the Princess cruise ship moored out at sea. On the way back we ... read more

With a lunchtime appointment about 150 miles away we left by 9am and headed further south. We arrived at the destination I entered on the Tom Tom to find that there were about 200 retirement homes at 21 Bracewell Road, Twin Waters! Fortunately there was a sales off which were able to give me Peter Bailey's address. He lived on an idilic retirement complex with a lovely large bungalow going down to the waters edge. We thought very similar to southern Florida. Peter, who is 90 next year, greeted us spritely at the door. Already there was Neville Marsh, an ex Vice Chancellor of an Aussie university. Peter has had a distinguished flying career - see Distinguished section of OF website. He showed us his study which has many momentos from his career. I encouraged him ... read more

Even though it was Sunday we were up and out of the apartment by 6.30am!! The Tom Tom was predicting 12 hours for the 550 miles to Urangan and although we made some time up by slightly exceeding the speed limit a couple of breaks meant that we didn''t arrive until after 6.30pm On the way we witnessed more and more miles of sugar cane! We stopped for lunch in Rockhampton for lunch. Its the beef capital of Queensland and one particular restaurant had been strongly recommended on Trip Adviser so we had lunch there and it was very good. Perhaps slightly strangley, they were showing cage wrestling on the large screens! Aussie's obviously love it! The beef was very good, made better by the fact that Stephanie and Tux paid for it. Around 4pm we ... read more

So, Ellie and I are still in Brisbane and have just finished our second and final period of exam invigilating and are now looking for some more work. We have applied to work at the EKKA Festival in Brisbane (a giant food festival) which runs for 10 days between the 10th and 20th of August, so hopefully we will be offered something there. There are plenty of jobs available, including: cash counting, sales staff and catering assistants. Since the last blog update we have been down to the Gold Coast and stayed with my relatives Steve and Sue for a long weekend. They have such an amazing apartment with a spectacular view across Labrador Bay. It was worth staying there just for a few days for the amazing view! The Gold Coast is quite a tourist-y ... read more

Well hello everybody, Sorry I have been off the radar for a little while, been having an interesting and relaxing time in Nimbin. Anyway, so I travelled on the bus to Byron Bay overnight and as usual slept like a log and woke up 20 mins from Byron. Checked into a hostel and had a wander down the beach. Was very nice, sat and chilled for a bit and tried to climb the rocks but my flip flop broke, so binned them! Then just chilled on the beach until the sunset. I will upload pics on here soon, but you want to see this sunset, was totally amazing, even better then all the ones in Asia. I think because there was so much cloud, it was unreal. Went back to the hostel and went out with ... read more

After years of dreaming, months of planning, and weeks of mooching off our parents (thanks Mum), the big day has finally arrived. This trip has been a long time coming – 21 years to be exact – and I can’t wait for it all to begin. I sort of feel like I did on my first day of high school; nervous and excited, with a really heavy backpack and absolutely no idea what I’m getting myself into. The older and wiser people in my life have offered a few pieces of wisdom for the journey ahead. Many have told me to enjoy the experience while I’m still young and savour every moment. Theres only My father suggests a slightly different approach. He says if anything goes wrong, I should think like a marine - “improvise, adapt ... read more

Hi everyone, just a quick update to let you know that everything is going great in Brisbane. Ellie and I have settled in well with my family and are getting very well looked after. We have also had some great luck on the job front and are now Assistant Exam Invigilators at Griffith University! Who would have thought that we would be doing this job just a year after sitting our own exam finals at uni? Certainly not us. It will keep us busy for two weeks and will certainly be some welcome money. On one day, we are invigilating three exams (morning, afternoon and evening) so will be on our feet for twelve hours! Ah, well – can’t complain it’s work after all! Other big news concerns Ellie and my choice of NRL team. It’s ... read more

As it stands we are very happy and frankly proud of all we have arranged so far. But the nagging feeling we should have looked deeper surfaces now and again. It wouldn't be a blog without some reflection! Currently we are staying in Anaheim for 5 nights. The hotel is 4 star and right next to Disney which. is. awesome. When I think of LA I think of Disney, Hollywood, Shopping, Beaches etc,. Another thing I'm totally looking forward to is our soujourn to the Getty Musuem. What luck! The Getty has all types of amazing modernist, post-structual, avant-grande, enlightenment, naturalist, surrealist art one could wish for! All for free! I think I might spend the better part of the day there... If there is one thing that captures my mind it's amazing art. Of ... read more

We decided to drive ourselves into Brisbane for the day and do the hop on hop off bus tour. Driving into Brisbane was easy enough but without a map we had a "fun" adventure of figuring out where to go to park our car and get to an information center. After finally parking the car we popped into the info center in the main shopping street. We bought our tickets to the bus tour and made our way to the first stop. We hopped on the bus and enjoyed the ride around the city and the commentary. The bus took us up to Mount Cootha which overlooks Brisbane and the river. We decided to hop off here and had a snack over looking the city. We hopped back on the next bus and rode it around ... read more

I'm sorry, Donny. But you've been replaced. I met the man of my dreams the other day and it's been heaven ever since. Chifley and I met quite by accident the other day and it was love at first sight. Finally, after 51 years of bad dates, cobwebs by the phone and carpal tunnel syndrome from sitting at a computer for so many years trying to find my "Mr. Right", Cupid has shot his arrow through my heart. And Chifley, very much the quiet and reserved type, feels the same way. I know it's so by the way he nestled his head under my chin mere seconds after we were introduced. Some of you may chafe at my new relationship (and I quite expected it to be so!) but I know THIS one is FOREVER. How ... read more
