A very, very cold night, however we were extra prepared for it and as a result slept comfortably. Two rangers checked our camping permit and we good to go! We laced up our hiking boots and walked the classed moderately difficult Mpaara trail which introduced us to the mythology of the Western Arrernte Aboriginal culture. We walked in a clockwise direction to follow the Mpaara dreaming story of the Tawny Frogmouth Man and the Pangkalanga Devil Man. The rocky track followed the base of the hills and then abruptly took us up a steep incline to the lookout where the views of the Finke River and Kalarranga area were superb. On the southern side of the lookout the track was very steep and uneven as it descended to the valley floor. We took extra care so ... read more

The day may have started with heavy cloud and a sprinkle of rain, but that was the only bad news on an exciting day out. We had booked a tour to Palm Valley with Alice Wanderer Day Tours, and all I can say is that this was a fantastic 10 hour adventure, and our driver/guide John was an encyclopaedia of knowledge as well as a master at rock-hopping the 4WD truck/Bus through the final 7ks to the valley. We had a 7:05am pickup at the caravan park, and, as usual for us, we were at the gate 10 minutes early, and the bus was waiting for us. Good news, we were first on, and selected seats with a good view of the road through the cab and also side windows. Not all the other folk were ... read more

Tuesday 20 August Today, we are all heading off to Palm Valley in the Finke Gorge National Park, Jo and Andrew are on their way home after their holiday and despite having spent a couple of nights with us have decide to come into Palm Valley with us for a quick look before heading off. A number of people have mentioned that Palm Valley is worthy of a look so it could not be missed. We were both up early and fairly swiftly we had packed up, unfortunately Andrew could not get his Landcruiser started, the battery was flat so Andy had to give him jump start. In the meantime an elderly lady who was travelling on her own wandered over and asked Andy if he knew anything about tyres. Apart from the usual joke that ... read more

Day 66 On the road by 9am with everyone showered and packed. Amazing. A short drive today to the valley of the palms. A stunning little valley with the last of the red palms in the world. Amazing to see these trees as once they are gone that is it. Jackie’s knees are bugging her so just Sean and I venture out for a short 2km hike. I didn’t use any stairs and climbed my way up to the top, only about 25 feet. Uh oh.. that got me going for more adventure. It was a stunning walk and an even more stunning drive. I am really enjoying the 4 wheeling we are doing, we are being gentle on Peana though, we don’t want to be stranded out here. We camp about 4km away from the ... read more

We were woken early by a chorus of brightly coloured parrots in the trees around us and, after some breakfast, jumped in the bruck to explore Palm Valley. The road that took us further into the park could barely be described as such and we had to leave the trailer behind as we bumped over the large uneven rocks. We even had to jump out and watch Ian ease the bruck over some particularly bad patches and you can see a video I took of one of them here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJEmrjcRHWI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFHqazPs5Jw Eventually, and to much relief, we reached the car park and climbed out to start our now customary early morning bush walk. Palm Valley is the only place in Central Australia where various palm trees can grow due to some semi-permanent pools in the base ... read more

Our final day of adventure in the red centre started with some unbelievable four-wheel driving into Palm Valley. We drove over huge boulders, through dry rocky riverbeds and deep sand. Palm valley is an oasis in the middle of the desert - a tiny bit of rainforest left over from when Australia was part of the large landmass called Gondwana. There were permanent waterholes and palm trees! In the desert! Our last stop was at Standley Chasm - a wondrous site just outside of Alice Springs. We had some fun climbing the rocks at the end of the chasm where the two walls closed in on one another. After the walk we retired to the canteen where everyone helped themselves to ice cream - a desert luxury. This entire tour was tremendous. Debora, our tour guide, ... read more
