This morning we made our way to Katherine Gorge. Half the group were going on a cruise and the other half (myself included) decided to canoe it. It was two to a canoe and I shared with Carina, a German girl who me and Kate have been sharing a room with since Alice Springs. It was hard work on our arms but the view was beautiful. We stopped on a beach after an hour to have a swim. We might've stopped earlier but it was the first beach that didn't have a sign saying not to swim because of the crocodiles! It was very refreshing anyway and cooled us down nicely after all our hard work. After the canoeing we re-joined the rest of the group and went to Edith falls. It was a very pretty ... read more

Hello We have travelled South from Darwin to Katherine where we spent a few days. One day was spent canoeing down the Gorge - which although hard work was fun. We have now spotted 182 dead kangeroos and travelled over 6000 kms. We are now in Alice Springs, leaving tomorrow to head South to Ayres Rock. Next update to be expected from Adelaide Hope you are all well Suzanne and Tony... read more

We have family scattered throughout Australia so we always look forward to these towns, One is Katherine , We love to again see our extended group and it has a feel of familiarity to the life we once led back in the metro suburban sprawl , New towns new people everyday tends to add a touch of the unreal to your day to day life, but hey we aren't complaining its a good problem to have....lol...... Buy a motorhome live in it for years and travel to every corner of Australia and you'll instantly know the feeling. It is hard to put a feeling down on the page as opposed to the subject matter. Anyway check the map and you'll see that Katherine is quite isolated from most major towns and it is smack dab on the ... read more

"The road is long"... We drove through the Queensland bush across the ‘Savannah Way’, which is single - track bitumen road that leads into the Northern Territory (that only the monster road trains use). We passed millions of termite mounds, road kill (inc. Kangaroos, Wallabies, Emus, Cows, Camels, Snakes, pigs, & rabbits), and the ‘Wedge-Tail’ Eagles - which are the biggest bird in Oz…its proper massive! The weather was great with clear blue skies everyday. We have come in the dry season, so bush fires were all over the place. The Northern Territory is the most baron and least populated region in Ozz, only 1% of the population live here, which covers 20% of the country. We were heading towards Katherine, the first stop in our trip. After six days of relentless driving @ around 500km ... read more

To get to the east coast I have to go back to Tennant Creek to get on the Barkly Highway. I wanted to stop over in Katherine as I liked the place the first time round. When I checked in, someone was booking a canoe for the Katherine gorge. Having managed to go the whole of New Zealand without doing this I book one too. Up at 6.30am to get to the Gorge in time to sort out my canoe. Unfortunately they gave me one without a motor so it was going to be down to using the paddles. The instructions were go where you want to, and swim where you want to. Apparently the fresh water crocodiles won’t attack you unless you bother them. Ok so there will be no swimming just incase the crocodiles ... read more

elo all The more days of adventure have passed in the outback. This segment was mainly a transport type trip from the middle of australia to the top end. Being that it was a long trip we were put into a big comfortable bus with lots of people from all over the world. The most interesting combination of people we had were some israeli soldiers and some u.s. navy and air force men. At one point in the trip the usa boys were cleaning dishes and the israeli soldiers were drying....meanwhile swapping stories and war talk. very interesting ease-dropping. our tour guide was also quite interesting, his name was cheif. he is a massive man that very closely resembles shrek. He plays blues, so we jammed. Quite a little hoot...if only i rocked more at blues. ... read more

After all the early mornings and nights trying to sleep on buses, I was well asleep when the bus arrived at Katherine. If the driver had not tried to find the owner of the lone backpack that was left on the roadside, I would probably have woken up several hundred miles away in Alice Springs or Townsville. The main attraction in Katherine was the gorge and, if you had the energy, the best way to experience it was by canoe. You could spend several days going the full length of the gorge, but due to a lack of camping gear and my general laziness meant that I opted for just one day. That was hard enough on the arms and they were stiff for several days afterwards. The guy who hired out the canoes cheerfully informed ... read more
