Hello all ..... I am back in Katherine after having spent 3 nights in Kakadu!! I actually prepared most of this post whilst in Kakadu as I had a bit of time (actually ... come to think about it .... I had LOTS of time). Now I have internet again, I can update and publish this post. Since my last post I have walked ALOT. After having the JGG serviced (and washed) in Darwin, I decided to visit Doctors Gully - the home of Aquascene - where you can hand feed wild fish at each high tide (for the small fee of $8!). Well .... I have not fed my own fish for quite some weeks now, so I was going through withdrawals (Thank you to Tony and Thuy for doing the honours whilst I am ... read more

Katherine is a one street kinda town and I am not kidding the street is called the Terrace and the streets off it are 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 4th Street how cool is that. Katherine Gorge has 13 gorges in total but not all are accessable, the pictures show the 1-3rd. The gorges only tend to have freshwater croc's in them but during the wet season some salties do get trapped, so swimming was not recommended at this time as the final check needs to be done to get the all clear. Local humor has a salty trap located on the otherside of the swimming area. John McDowell Stuart was the first Europen Explorer and to get funding for his trip he approached Mr Chambers a well off man in the town and said he would ... read more

After Kakadu we stay in Darwin for the night and with a 5.40am start we hit the road to Alice which takes 3 days. There's not much to see or do on the way to Alice so on day 1 it was a short drive to Katherine gorge stopping first at Leliyn to a huge lake for a walk swim and stretch and then drive to Katherine to the hot springs which were cool. Stay in Katherine for the night, this is the real outback, literally stay in the middle of nowhere... read more

The Ghan and Katherine Gorge After a true hangover day at the pool relaxing with those from the tour it was time to say goodbye and move on once again. We were heading North to Darwin via the Ghan. The Ghan is a luxury train which travels from Adelaide to Darwin over 3 days. It is a must whilst in Australia as you truly get to appreciate the sheer size of this country and see the sparse landscape first hand. Dean from our Alice Springs tour jumped on the Ghan too which made the long 24hr journey a great laugh. We had a lounge, a bar, dining room, sleeper seats and a lovely conductor. It was amazing watching the land change from red dust into lush green flood plains as we reached the Adelaide River in ... read more

With a pre-dawn wake up call, we were on the road by 6am. The whole day would be spent at Nitmiluk National Park, home of Katherine Gorge. We would be given 5.5 hours to canoe down the gorges, have lunch and return. After this we were heading into Kakadu to spend the night. This day would involve the most driving. There is 13 gorges in total and we would be seeing 3 of them. During the dry season you can't access most of them because the water was too low and during the wet you can only use motor boats because of the strong currents. Along with the steep walls, there are quite a few nice beaches, but because of crocodile nesting areas, you can't land on them. Katherine Gorge has only fresh water crocs which ... read more

We traveled south from Kakadu to Katherine. We stopped at a swim at a waterfall. Then we headed into Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine George. I did the optional George cruise. It was no where near as good as the Kakadu cruise but it was nice to be in the gorge and see the area. There were fresh water crocs but only a few people saw them. We went past a few breeding grounds. The river was low so the boat could not go through the entire gorge system but we got to get out and hike it and go for a swim. There was an Aboriginal display too of weapons and Didgeridoos. Contiki people got to have a try at the Didge. That night for Dinner we celebrated a birthday for one of the travelers ... read more

After only an hour’s drive from the lovely thermal pools at Mataranka we arrived at Katherine, known specifically for its Gorge, huge termite mounds and Aboriginal Culture (rock paintings etc). We finally found a really nice campsite about 7 km out of town and set up camp for the night, this was such as nice quiet campsite compared to the one at Mt Isa! (well anything would be quieter than that place!) The next morning after a well deserved lie in, we organized a half-day boat trip for our selves through 3 of the 19 or so sections that made up the National park. This did not start till after lunch so we decided to go ‘walkabout’ on their 3.7 km loop walk which would give us spectacular views from lookouts on top of the first ... read more

We left Darwin on Tuesday and went straight to Litchfield National Park were we enjoyed an afternoon in a clear pool at the bottom of two waterfalls. Yesterday we drove to Katherine Gorge where we organized a tour of the gorge for today. Spent the morning on the river. Both parks were amazing spots of green and blue in an otherwise water starved landscape. They must be amazing places though during the wet, when the water in Katherine Gorge can be 7 metres deeper than what we saw. ... read more

It is so nice to be in one place and not keep moving hostel to hostel! Having such a good time staying with andrew in Katherine. Katherine is a small town, but has pretty much got everything you need. Anything extra you need, people tend to drive up to Darwin regularly and get stuff there. Life here is certainly more relaxed than back home....... we do stress too much!! Feels like 'real' australia here - i hate that term, its so cheesy, but its away from all the tourism of the east coast, is very hot and has that outback look so think i am justified in making that statement! Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) is a big attraction here. It comprises of 13 gorges, separated by rapids and carved out by the Katherine a river. We ... read more

I know you are all going to find this hard to believe, but I have had no success with the Barra… Although as a determined fisherman I must keep trying (sorry Janie). On Saturday we headed off to Lake Argyle to take in the view of the massive amount of water such a structure holds. Five times the size of Sydney Harbour, covers 1000 square kilometres over 120kms; this is some lake. Stopped in at the Durack homestead museum that demonstrates the contribution this pioneering family made to open the Kimberley region. After relaxing over a wood-fired BBQ lunch at the picnic area beside the Ord River, we saw quite a few freshwater Croc’s at the discharge area for the Hydro Scheme quite obviously waiting for their lunch to arrive through the tubes. Sunday saw ... read more
