Still heading southwards to Sydney, and the next stop on the way was Coonanbarabran which is a small, almost hick town (sorry anyone who lives there!) where strangely men have to wear a proper long sleeved shirt to go into bars & restaurants & everyone seems to dress up at night to go to the pub! The reason we stopped in this haven was to go to the Warrumbungle national park & see the Warrumbungles, which are mountains & just happen to have a great name! We stayed in the cheapest hotel I've ever come across, called the Imperial Hotel (sounds posh I know but names can be deceiving!) which was actually ok but had no air con anywhere & the temperature's were up in the mid to high 30's so there was actually no air ... read more

Well we have been deciding on arrival how long we want to stay as nothing is pre booked. Melbourne looked nice and after a couple of weeks out in the sticks with thousands of Aussie nuckle draggers we needed a bit of city life. We stayed in a nice hotel and recharged the batteries. Our last day was to be at the MCG for the one day England v Aus. Neither of us had been to a cricket match before and didnt know what to expect. How long a one dayer takes or even how the game is planned. We arrived at 1 for a 2:15 start and found ourselves surrounded by thousands of Aussie nuckle draggers except for Cleggy, a guy four rows down with an England flag and Cleggy written on his back. As ... read more

Ok so i know that this should really be included as part of our stay in sydney but i get to put more photos on this way. The area is absolutly stunning and so chilled/laid back would have liked to have stayed longer. Any way we caught the train from sydney central station to Katoomba in the blue mountains. The train ride was pretty good i got to ride on the top deck of a double decker train, which i don't think i've ever done before. we arrived in the early afternoon and went in search of our hostel, which we found just down the road from the station. it was a huge building that resembled a hospital from the outside, inside it looked even more like a hospital, lino floors white walls and ceilings, with ... read more

Checked out of the central hostel and walked down to the YHA which has been voted the best hostel in Aus for the last 2 years. The dorm was not ready so left the bags in the luggage storage and headed for the scenic railway via Echo Point. I got to the scenic world and purchased a return ticket which enabled me to use the railway and cableway. I caught the railway down into the forest, This railway is the steepest railway with a vertical drop of 250m and the steepest incline of 52 degrees. Once at the bottom I took a board walk through the rainforest and there were a number of different wildlife and plants, during the walk you got a view of the three sisters which are 3 rocks. Following the walk I ... read more

Checked out of Dulwich Yha and went to central then got a ticket for Katoomba which is in the Blue Mountains about 2.5hrs away from Sydney. There were a number of day tours from Sydney. On arrival I found the central hostel as it was directly opposite the train station, I checked in and was given a room which had 4 beds in. Only another 2 was being used, I found out that the hostel used to be the local hospital, I went into the centre and looked around returned in the evening and met the couple that was in the same dorm they are from the UK and are travelling for 14 months started in India.... read more

It was fun to go on a road trip with Morten and Marianne and we really enjoyed getting to know them over the four days we spent exploring the Blue Mountains together. The journey up to Katoomba would have been quite scenic but as we have come to expect the cloud and rain obscured the view! We arrived at our base for the next few days, the G’day motel and settled into our family room. After getting the lowdown on good places to eat we headed into town for some much needed food. One diner took our fancy as they were offering Kangeroo steaks on the specials board, Morten and I were up for tasting a bit of the nations wildlife! We were bitterly disappointed to say the least when our waitress told us that they ... read more

Today we had one of our most adventurous days of the tour! One of the things on my list of to do's was Canyoning, and we have spent the day in the Blue Mountains abseilling and canyoning. We started off at a site near the 3 sisters, and were abseilling down cliffs of 5m, 10m and then 30 metres respectively. Having climbed quite a bit indoor recently, the abseilling was pretty easy for us both, but it was a great view down the cliff sides further below each climb - the valley continued on for several hundred metres below each abseill site! We had a couple of drops on the 30m cliff - and it was good training for the afternoon's climax! After a picnic at Wentworth Falls we headed down the Valley of the Waters ... read more

Today we headed off on a bus trip to the Jenolan Caves - a massive complex of cave's (some 300+ different cave systems) The trip out to the Caves took just over an hour and a half from Katoomba - and we went through some great Bush and Farm lands. Several Eastern Grey Kangaroo's were sheltering under the tree's from the midday heat and there were numerous Cockatoo's flying around the tree's en route. The entrance to the Cave site was through a huge archway in the moutainside called the Grand Arch, and once we arrived we were quickly sent off down to our first cave to start the tour. Our first Cave was Lucas Cave - one of the largest in the area is an hour and a half walk, involving 961 steps and leads ... read more

Waking up very cold this morning was very strange... now I say really cold, obviously I know those of you reading in the UK are laughing your heads off, but for us being in less then 20 degrees of heat is odd, we haven’t known this kind of cold for months! I had to put a fleece on! We had a leisurely breakfast then headed out to plan our 3 days in the Blue Mountains. That sorted- I wont ruin the surprises to follow, we headed out on a tour bus of the area. This is a tour bus with a difference; it was a double decker red London bus, a hop on hop off system around Katoomba and the various scenic points along the ridge of the mountains and the World Heritage listed national park. ... read more
