We headed through a couple of big towns as we finally started to head South. First stop was Narromine, the birthplace of Glenn Mcgrath, or so I presume from the statue of him in town. Another lunch in the park, a pitstop for booze and we were off to Goobang National Park. Actually no. That park is closed due to the recent floods and storms in the area. So we decided to head toward Parkes and 'The Dish' where we stopped for a gander. An interesting spot and even more interesting as they provided quite a bit of detail about what the dish is looking at over the next few weeks. We could see the devastation that the recent weather has had in the area as we drove through with trees down everywhere and damaged roofs ... read more

Well today was a BIG day. Started out before 4 in the morning. Looked like Marli was going to miss us, she stood on the verandah and watched us drive off. She looked a bit sad. Felt pretty melancholy myself.. Even though its going to be a great trip it will take some getting used to and it will be sad being away from everyone, especially the wee littlies! But none the less, here we go! Rob did a fabulous job today, driving for 10 or more hours. I wasn't any help as I was trying to recover from the residuals of a head ache, so rode in the 'first class cabin' for quite a while. (Sshh don't tell anyone, but its up the top in the bed! Not entirely legal, but very comfy!) We stopped a ... read more

After breakfast we went to the McFeeters Motor Museum just up the road, where we were greeted at the entrance by a little Czechoslovakian 3 wheel 1962 Velorex, with a canvas body! Most unusual. Mr McFeeter had been a sheep farmer, now retired, whose hobby was collecting old cars. He had quite a few that were on loan and 40, which were his own cars. They included vintage and veteran cars, some Rolls Royces, a Kia Elan prototype with a plastic body and even a brightly painted car called “Barbie” with $5,000 worth of 24 carat gold plate on its fittings! The cars were displayed in a large carpeted purpose-designed building with windows and a strong inside balcony but, smart man for thinking ahead, he told us it was actually the fully insulated shell for a ... read more

Everywhere was misty this morning and there were three horses wearing coats standing miserably in the field next to us. Poor things. Barry managed to rig up a strap to take the pressure off the rear-view camera connection, which seemed to work, so he can see behind again. Time to move. I wanted to have a quick look at Mirrool on our way past as it had been our planned destination yesterday. We’d read in Wikicamps that it was very good and free (gold coin donation) and behind the Royal Hotel (another one!). Unfortunately the pub is now closed and up for sale ($220,000 if you want a pub in the middle of a very small community). The camping area is not actually part of the pub but behind the Fire Station. There is a really ... read more

“Camps Australia Wide” (the caravaner’s bible) promised us lots of potential free camping sites along the Murrumbidgee river after Hay. With this in mind we departed Trentham Cliffs caravan park heading across the Hay plain. Our caravan pace meant that we stopped for our morning coffee somewhere out in the middle of the Hay plain. The land was flat as far as the eye could see and the sun shone brightly; travelling was good. Soon after Hay we started to look for the spot we had selected – Burrabogie Reserve. The distance passed with no sighting but then we saw a big sign for Burrabogie, but it did not look right. With the van parked by the gate Greg walked in to investigate. This turned out to be the station homestead. In one of the workshops ... read more

Saturday 9th July Left Hay planning on stopping at West Wyalong but the weather was cold so we decided that the car was the best place to be so we carried on to Forbes and found the most delightful caravan park right on the Lachalan River, paid an extra $3 per night for a riverfront position right in front of the water fall. ($30 pn less TT disc $3 - $27pn) Just beautiful, it was a pity that that is was too cold to sit outside to watch the water fall. Sunday we went for a drive to Parkes to see the Telescope which featured in the movie "The Dish" which was about the people involved in tracking the Apollo 11 Mission to the moon in 1969. The telescope was built in Parkes because it was ... read more

As we drove from Griffith, the huge paddocks continued as far as the eye could see - under cultivation and ready for wheat planting. Each town had the inevitable big silo and the spilt grain on the road brings all manner of birds - flocks of galahs, corellas, and rosellas that take to the air in a colourful cloud as we drive towards them. Small hills appeared, changing the flat landscape we’d had for a few days. We had lunch at Narrandera by the river, then decided to turn off the highway to have a look at Ariah Park - the sign ‘town of Bowsers, Wowsers and Pepper Trees’ had us intrigued. The main street was indeed lined with pepper trees and there were quite a few old petrol bowsers dotted along the footpaths. I suppose ... read more

We were all up bright and early on Monday morning and David helped load the remaining stuff into Sweetie – why do I always take too many clothes that remain unworn?? (not to mention all the other bits of junk I cart around). In spite of all that we managed to be ready to go at 9am so waved a fond farewell to David for the third time. We really do treasure our time with him and he is always so hospitable – thanks very much David, we appreciate you letting us share your house whenever we feel like it!! We’ll see David again very soon as he is spending Christmas in Melbourne with our sister, Daphne. We were slightly apprehensive about what sort of road conditions we might encounter as we set off towards Goondiwindi ... read more

This weekend we took off west over the mountains, to Forbes. The purpose of our journey was to attend a friends birthday celebrations. We have not driven out that west for sometime and it was good to get away and see how the countryside is looking. Our last visit to the town of Forbes was 10 years ago for the same person’s 40th birthday celebrations. From our place Forbes is about 310kms, from Sydney you have to add about another 80kms. The temperature on the way gradually dropped from about 12 at our place down to about 4 degrees at Orange. The clouds on the horizon looked suspiciously like snow clouds. At the party we caught up with some folks from our motorcycle riding days with an organisation called the MRA (the Motorcycle Riders Association). All ... read more
