Hey All, Today we stayed in and around Broken Hill. We needed a recharge so we slept in then had a big cooked breaky. We headed off to Silverton, 20k out of Broken Hill. Silverton in its hey day had about 5000 people living there, 12 pubs, a courthouse and gaol. The town itself has been in approx 100 movies and commercials, a commercial is filmed there nearly every two months. Mad Max 2 was filmed there and they even had a replica of the interceptor parked near the pub. It is a bit of a ghost town now, about 20 people live there but the history of the place was pretty good. After some coffee, scones and damper from one of the old huts we headed to the Living Desert and the Sculptures. This was ... read more

Hey All, Today we have gone into our 4th State and entered Broken Hill in NSW. We still haven't seen too much news as our internet connection is with Optus, therefore it is crap and our net drops out a fair bit. We have been told by a lot of people that we are lucky as we would still be stuck on the Oodnadatta track (don't see a downside to that) We left Port Augusta this morning after taking our time packing up as we only had about 450 ks to do. Pretty boring day really, saw a heap of Emu's again so we stopped for some photos the beeped the horn heaps to make them run and they didn't let us down. They were running around like they were dodging bullets, left. right, fall over, ... read more

Hi all We had a good flight back to Adelaide from NZ last Thursday, got our car and van out of storage , and were all set up at West Beach before mid day. We spent a few days getting organised, but had to wait to Tuesday for Coromal to replace our boot (under warantee). Chris did a little maintainance, but we decided, since we had time up our sleeve, to pay the expensive price and visit Kangaroo Island. We had talked to quite a few people who said it was a great place to visit, and a "must do". It was about the only place we hadn't been in S.A. On Saturday we were picked up from nearby Glenelg at 6am, dropped to the coach which took us down to Pt Jervis. We boarded the ... read more

OUR 4000KM WALKABOUT Having spent approximately two months in Moreton Bay at the RQYS Marina, we decided to venture into the ‘outback’ and ‘Go Bush’ as it’s described here down under, see something of the wild, wide open, red earth spaces. Our friend Paul kindly loaned us his Land Rover Defender - the perfect vehicle for such an adventure. Driving on day one took us to the Warrumbungle National Park (a wonderful name for an exquisite volcanic range of mountainous spires) ; about 9 hours on sealed roads. 100km an hour, windows down, 32 degrees centigrade to keep us cozy on our travels - the ideal outfit - a cool bikini. After constant rainfall for about a month, we found the hinterland of Queensland and New South Wales to be green and lush; quite the contrast ... read more

After a week of uncharacteristic luxury in Fiji for a cousin’s wedding in mid-January - what I do in the name of representing my branch of the family! - I headed off to the distant reaches of western New South Wales to see how an erstwhile elephant scientist was adapting to life with marsupials for company. Sadly the elephants of Namibia’s Kaokoland had not weathered the global financial crisis well, and a lack of funding had driven the principal scientist to look for a “real job” back in his native Australia. Mind you, the “real job” he found involves running a research station in the middle of serious amounts of nowhere north of Broken Hill for the University of New South Wales - not exactly a nine-to-five desk job, and one in a landscape not dissimilar ... read more

We're back on the road! After checking out of the Sydney Central YHA on the 18th November we went to Central Station (having remembered quite how much our bags weighed on the short walk there!) and found the platform for the Indian Pacific train. It's name comes from the fact that it runs between the Indian and Pacific oceans on its twice weekly 4,352 kilometres trip between Sydney and Perth, via a select few stops. We were only interested in one, Broken Hill. We checked out bags in (yes, checked in - like at an airport!) and found our very comfortable seats. Just as well they were comfortable really, we were to be in them for the next 18 hours. Yikes. The journey was remarkably smooth, although that might be because we still haven't got used ... read more

Geo: -31.9592, 141.467So the bad news is that my camera is stuffed, can't take photos, so I was forced to buy a disposable camera, so expect crapper quality photos. I'm not too impressed; I have to get it fixed back either in Newcastle or Sydney and an exorbitant price most likely. So armed with limited photos from a disposable, I had to be frugal with what shots I was going to be taking. So I was struggling a little bit on the Saturday, following my camera problems I had cash flow problems. Seeing as I had lost my wallet in Melbourne, I was still waiting for my bank cards to be sent from home, but because I had the week off and came to Broken Hill I told Mum to wait for me to get back to ... read more

Geo: -31.9592, 141.467Where would be a cheap place to go for 4 days which also has enough to see and do? How about Broken Hill? Seems like such an odd place to go to, and you would be mistaken for thinking that there wouldn't be much or anything. 4 days is a good amount of time to see all and do all.But to experience all of this came at a small price, yes financially, but also mentally. I was setting off from Sydney, on the other side of the state. I had to endure a 16.5 hr trip to get here and then again to get back.Sean and I had finished auditing the last few schools in the Hunter/Central coast area but the film was not ready and would not be ready till the following week, ... read more

We stopped overnight at Cobar on Monday 31 Aug. It's a quiet little place that feels and looks like it's just hanging on to existence. There's lots of motels for travellers and we had had such a long haul from Gunnedah to Cobar that we were very glad we didn't have to unpack the tent.....we haven't unpacked it yet! While the buildings are a bit run down and in need of a good paint job, Cobar felt safe and the peole were helpful and friendly. We had a surpringly good Thai meal at the Services Club and slept like babies. Cobar to Wilcannia seemed to take forever and it was interesting to see how quickly the vegetaion changed as we travelled along. It was quite green and lush when we left Cobar but quickly changed to ... read more
