Hey All, Today we stayed in and around Broken Hill. We needed a recharge so we slept in then had a big cooked breaky. We headed off to Silverton, 20k out of Broken Hill. Silverton in its hey day had about 5000 people living there, 12 pubs, a courthouse and gaol. The town itself has been in approx 100 movies and commercials, a commercial is filmed there nearly every two months. Mad Max 2 was filmed there and they even had a replica of the interceptor parked near the pub. It is a bit of a ghost town now, about 20 people live there but the history of the place was pretty good. After some coffee, scones and damper from one of the old huts we headed to the Living Desert and the Sculptures. This was ... read more

Hey All, Today we have gone into our 4th State and entered Broken Hill in NSW. We still haven't seen too much news as our internet connection is with Optus, therefore it is crap and our net drops out a fair bit. We have been told by a lot of people that we are lucky as we would still be stuck on the Oodnadatta track (don't see a downside to that) We left Port Augusta this morning after taking our time packing up as we only had about 450 ks to do. Pretty boring day really, saw a heap of Emu's again so we stopped for some photos the beeped the horn heaps to make them run and they didn't let us down. They were running around like they were dodging bullets, left. right, fall over, ... read more

Hey All, This morning we left the Underground Motel in Coober Pedy, had a nice bacon & Eggs breaky at the roadhouse then headed for Port Augusta. We had a leisurely drive watching all the old trucks heading north and just cruising today. Saw about 30 Emu's, 2 eagles and heaps of dead cows. We had the bad weather chasing us but it by-passed Port Augusta so we should be good. When we got here i got out the camp oven and proceeded to make a beer damper in the camp oven on the gas cooker. One hour later i had burnt the bottom of the damper but the top half was usable. Tasted like CRAP! Too much beer in it, not enough salt. We thru it out, went into town and had Chinese. Tomorrow we ... read more

Hey all, Day 6 had us Leaving Uluru for Oodnadatta but it wasn't to be and we ended up in Coober Pedy. I was absolutely shattered yesterday arvo! We heard on the UHF that the rain we had at Uluru had gotten worse and moved towards the Simpson closing all roads down the Oodnadatta. No access in or out. I called the roadhouse to confirm and he said at least 2-3 days until roads might be opened. When we got to Marla we drove 500m down the Oodnadatta track to the signs and sure enough everything was closed, NOT HAPPY JAN!!!!!!! We decided to put in a big day then and drive to Coober Pedy and stay in an underground Hotel for the night which was great. They drilled a big horizontal hole into the the ... read more

Hey all, Day 5 sees us still at Uluru. Today we took it easy, not much driving, Nana naps, site seeing and then spoilt for dinner. We started of with a nice cooked breaky on the BBQ and left the van around 10am. Took off to the Olga's for a look. Pretty windy here today so just did the site seeing stuff. After the Olga's we went to Uluru, i know i said the other day that it is impressive but when you get up next to it, its just bloody huge! The rock was shut due to high winds at the Summit so we went for a drive and walk. The steepness of it is hard to appreciate until you look at it close up. I will climb this one day but it is not ... read more

Hey all, Day 4 had us leaving the Marla roadhouse for Uluru. The campground at Marla was nice, had a supermarket, Pub, Restaurant, pool and dodgy locals! There were a few very shifty types getting around that night so we had dinner and went back to the van to watch a movie. In the morning there was a police van out the front talking to two local black fellas and a woman with child. The police took her over to the van and the two other starting abusing the cops, if you used that language to a Victorian copper you would have been shot then told to pull ya head in! We left there and headed for the border, a lot of nothing out here!!!!!!! We did however see two massive wedge tailed eagles eating some ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Woomera August 20th 2010

Hey All, Day 3 saw us departing the eerie township of Woomera for Marla. I say eerie because it is a town full of houses with not many of them being used, Dorm type of buildings boarded up but the whole place is spotless. They used to launch and test all types of military planes, missiles and rockets from here. It is still run by the army, AUS & USA and there are still a lot of restricted areas (127 million sq acres), Tracey believes there are massive conspiracy's going on here, so do i! On the way to Marla we stopped in at the Opal mining town of Coober Pedy, dusty & ugly! and thats just the locals!!!! We saw two of our Indigenous friends having a Barney! The woman hit the bloke with a ... read more

Hey All, We woke this morning to it pouring with rain and found ourselves packing up a wet caravan. Had a massive head wind as we headed to Port Augusta and went thru 90 litres for only 450k! Called into Wilmington for lunch after Judy & Mal had said it was a good lunch spot. Best home made pies i have ever had, Trace hasnt been crook after the Chicken so it must have been good too. We have pulled into Woomera for the night, this is where they used to do the missile launches, place looks like a ghost town. Blowing a gale, rain clouds look like they have passed. Once again the grey Nomads have accepted us into their club with the Aussie salute being used everywhere. We seem like we are the only ... read more

Hey All, Just a quicky. We left Geelong at 0545 this morning and we are now sitting in the van in Barmera, SA. We have covered around 800km comfortably and are now kicking back with a drink, food and DVD. We have somehow been accepted into the Grey Nomad travelling caravan club, they keep waving to us so we wave right back. Tomorrow we should be in Coober Pedy or Bon Bon. We are just taking it as it goes. Will put pics on another time.... read more
