Ok. Long pants? Short pants? Actually it wasn’t really that cold (26°C), just a lot cooler than we had been accustomed to over the last 4 weeks. Tempted by the potential views and description in Tourist brochures, we headed for the Broken Earth Restaurant for lunch. Set high up on the overburden heap overlooking the city of Broken Hill, this ultra-modern building offered stunning views of the city and surrounds, fabulous dining, galleries and a memorial to those who have lost their lives over the years in the mines in the Broken Hill area. The lunch menu sounded great but unfortunately our options were somewhat limited to a few as a power surge earlier in the morning had knocked out the fryer and the coffee machine. None-the-less the chosen gourmet pizza and bottle of wine were ... read more

The Big Australian Day 1674/13 (12 June) 2013 As we are in a the mining town of Broken Hill, the Original Home to BHP, how could you not call this blog the "Big Australian". How bad is this? I am on my iPad typing away and uploading photos to the blog and Andy is sat on the laptop tapping away and also uploading photos to the blog, I guess that's the way life is for the both of us, perhaps we should converse a little bit more, otherwise we can catch up on what each other is doing by reading the blog! What a day it's been, busy and wet, I thought we would float away this afternoon. We had been out all morning and for part of the afternoon, we had just got back to ... read more

Today is the day we start our journey. The Day is met with mixed feelings, excitement for the travel ahead, and sadness with the goodbyes. As if saying goodbye to your children isn't hard enough, throw a grandchild into the mix and the goodbyes are really tough! As we make our way from Mildura, destination Muttawintji N.P located about 130km from Broken Hill, the weather report kept telling us ego expect rain, 20-40ml - huh, what would they know, it's a magical 20 degree day, not a cloud in the sky, or a breath if wind, just what we ordered. We arrive at the N.P, tired & weary, set up camp, beer in hand, night sky filled with stars, couldn't possibly be raining tomorrow, or at least the morning, plan to get up early, do the ... read more

This morning we towed the caravans out to Silverton. Located approx. 25km's NW of Broken Hill. Silverton is an old mining town which was built by miners in search of their fortunes. In the 1800's it was a bustling Town with a population of around 3,000; however, today it has a population of around 50people. Silverton has starred in countless films and television shows and many of you may recognise the buildings. A Town Like Alice and Mad Max 2 were filmed here. The old Silverton Gaol has a very interesting museum attached to it and the little Gallery, up on the hill, serves a lovely cuppa and toasted sandwich. We spent a few hours in Silverton. After lunch we drove back into Broken Hill to visit the Pro Hart Gallery. The Gallery is 3 levels ... read more

Today we went with Robert and Tracy, in their four wheel drive, to visit the Darling River and the Menindee Lakes Region, situated in the Kinchega National Park. It was a wonderful day. The Menindee Lakes are situated approx. 110 km's south east of Broken Hill. They consist of a chain of shallow ephemeral freshwater lakes connected to the Darling River to form a storage system. When the storage system is full it holds over three and a half times the water of Sydney Harbour and provides a haven for water birds of all kinds. We saw quite a lot of birdlife today. Pelicans, cormorants, a spoonbill and lots of other water birds and smaller finches, parrots and the like. Several explorers have passed through this area including, Burke and Wills (1860 expedition) and Charles Sturt (1844). ... read more

This morning we caught up on a few chores, did the washing and tidied up a bit. We then drove out to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base. This was very very interesting. We enjoyed our time here. They RFDS now has around 19 or 20 Bases. We watched a video explaining about this invaluable service and then did a tour of the Broken Hill Base. Three of the planes were at the Base at the time of our visit. Amongst the photos below, you will see a picture of a Pedal Radio. This was invented by Alfred Traeger and distributed to isolated properties throughout QLD in 1929, giving people in remote areas a means of communication We then drove back in to Town so as Steve could have a milkshake at the Bells Café. ... read more

We woke to a wet day today. We had a long drive ahead of us as we wanted to reach Broken Hill by tonight. First stop was Cobar, to get petrol, and then we drove for quite some time. We stopped at a rest area to have a break and a nice hot cuppa. There were lots and lots of wild goats roaming along the roadside. Surprisingly, we hardly saw any kangaroos although, there were a lot of emus. We dove on to Wilcannia and filled up our tanks for the outback drive to Broken Hill, we had a lot of kilometres to drive and wanted to make sure that we did not run out of petrol. It was lovely to finally arrive at Broken Hill, we were tired, wet and cold. It didn't take us ... read more

Jim Loses his Camera in Broken Hill What a story this is and it’s all true. Believe me! Wayne said that I could not make this up when we told him what had happened today. Here’s how it developed. Yesterday (22nd August) – our only full day in Broken Hill Sue and I decided to do the rounds of the Art Galleries – Yes “us” in Art Galleries is unbelievable for a start, but if you know Broken Hill you will know that this place is famous for it’s artists. Most famous would be “Pro” Hart. Pro passed away a few years ago and a Gallery has been set up in his honour. We went there and were able to take photos of his work and his studio, which was exactly as he left ... read more

Esperance to Streaky Bay South Australia via the Nullarbor We got away from Esperance early morning and headed for Caiguna Roadhouse our first overnight stop. Our morning tea and fuel stop was at Norseman just at the start of the Nullarbor. On our way through these little towns I was noticing some really strange names - one of the first was ”Gibson Soak” the next was” Grass Patch” and the funniest was “Salmon Gums”. Our next fuel stop was some roadhouse that I can’t remember the name of (Jim – Balladonia). We stopped there fuelled up and had some lunch in our vans. Jane had made Alan’s lunch then poured him a pineapple juice. He immediately knocked it over so Jane cleaned that up a... read more

Geo: -31.9592, 141.467Refer to Previous Blogs, Just add Anna!Haha Just Kidding.I like this place. Miles from anywhere but it still has a lot to offer. This was to be our first stop off in our 10 day trip through the outback. After finishing my course we wasted no time and left for Mildura by 12pm the next day. It wasn't the most exciting day, just covering 550km to Mildura. We arrived by 7pm and set up camp which consisted of us sleeping in my car in our fold over bed set up. We parked in the information center car park and thus starting our daily routine of pasta dinners, sneaking in free showers and car sleeping. We were aiming to save money by sleeping in the car and with almost $500 in the kitty from selling a ... read more
