Hey everyone, well today's the day! I'm in New York right now, just getting a final few things taken care of before I leave. I'm a little nervous, but more excited! Tomorrow at this time, I'll be in Dublin, Ireland, hopefully with a Guiness in hand. My flight takes off at 6:15p.m and I land tomorrow at about twelve p.m., so with a five hour time difference, it will be 7a.m. eastern time. I'll try to get on here as much as possible to let everyone know how things are going and to keep up on your lives as well!! Please keep me updated!!! I'll miss everyone!! Be safe, take care, keep in touch and I will see you in a few months!!!... read more

The truth of the matter is that I can never move back to North Carolina. It's something I didn't want to realize; part of me had always hoped that I could return to the world I was comfortable and complacent within prior to leaving for Japan, with familiar walls and scenery that used to excite. I thought that maybe I needed my dog to feel at home, or friends close by, my old university right down the road from me. But I realized after being in my father's house for less than an hour that those things couldn't be returned: I really have changed. I remembered the exact reason why I ran away to Japan to begin with, and as much as I wish that it wasn't the truth.. It can't really be helped. Mail me ... read more

Last evening we were struck with a fierce rain, wind, and hail storm. Our damage is illustrated in the pictures as attached. While it is disappointing to lose our hobby garden, it is a huge loss to the farmers in our area.... read more

day two Been to see the statue of liberty today, its really impressive. Unfortunately all the tickets to go up it were sold out for the day but we still managed to get the boat over to the island. The weather was toasting and we had a lovely time chilling on the grass. We then caught the boat over to Ellis Island which used to be the first port of call for new immigrants. There's a museum on the island which mapped out the process they all went through before being allowed into america. We bought city passes for the week which gets us into 6 tourist attractions and meant that we got to skip the one hour long queue and get straight on the boat!! (this was the highlight of my day! ;)) The new ... read more

Just getting last minutes details in place...supplies: toiletries, security info, house care, dog care, thirteen-year-olds' care, blog, cruisecritic membership, etc. We are thrilled to begin this adventure, yet there are soooo many details to consider (see above). We are beginning the journey with dropping off the said 13 year olds in Sea Isle City, NJ...Now there is an ocean port to visit....no cruise ships, but the longest, soft gray sand beaches, waves to ride, fudgiewudgies to eat, and after 5, the best-beer-taste of your choice...... read more

Just to update everyone... we made it back alive. While as you all know I only made it to Costa Rica Barton made it as far as Chile, the original goal. So for all of you who doubted us, and understandably many of you did, here is another chance to jump on the bandwagon. The few months I have spent back in the good ole USA have involved painted bookshelves for a free trade market in Evanston, IL, and going to a ridiculous amount of White Sox Baseball games. As for Barton, well he hadn't been back for more than 72 hours when I half-jokingly made reference to a possible summer road trip to Alaska. Armed with a new, not so new Subaru a new pipedream was born. Fearing the real world like the plague that ... read more

So today we went to this waterpark in Texmico with the kids who didn't get visitors on visitors day. There were only 44 kids which means an amazing amount of people had visitors. It's in an old haceinda grounds which is of course like an old plantation in the south. Basically we played volleyball, frisbee, football, laid in the lazy river, swam, and played in the pools and slides where a bunch of slaves were held. We also had an awesome BBQ with great food. There were some pretty cool old buildings. It was a ton of fun but very exhausting and I have my first official sunburn. It's bad on my legs- real bad. I'm around 9:30 and I'm ready to pass out. These long days are hard and very active which I'm really enjoying. ... read more

I'm finally feeling the pressure of going to England next week! =) I bought my textbook today - a book of photocopies for about $70.00 - when I had the book in my hands, this all started to feel so real. I've been DREAMING of this for over a year now. I remember when I first told my mom I wanted to do this - she said that she and my dad would support me in this - THANK YOU MOM & DAD. I've started the packing process - I have two luggages in my room, laying on the floor with open arms ready to catch whatever I throw their way. I'm nervous, excited, scared and happy all at the same time. I have a going away "party" on Friday - invited a couple of friends ... read more
