Day 39 – Thursday – San Simeon, California Another different and interesting day for us today. We headed out of San Francisco this morning (via the crookest street!!!) to Hearst Castle. Have to admin NOT my favorite drive at all and it ended up taking us a good hour or two longer than we had expected to get to the Castle (in time for our booked tour). Not to mention, we had to drive through army land to get to the coast (an experience in itself, we even saw a tank!!!) and gawwwd, we traversed the longest and windiest road EVER (forget Lombard Street). I swear, the turns/curves/winds went on for about an hour and I was SICK by the end of it!!! Thankfully once we got out of the car I started to feel ... read more

Welcome to my new travel blog! I just wanted to send a note from home, perhaps with some brief updates. My last day at my nanny job will be June 29th, just moments before my July 1st departure. Next week I will be focusing on packing up and moving out the majority of my items and taking them to my house in Torrance. I reall do not have too much here (mainly photo albums/books/clothes/movies). I have gotten to the point (finally) where I do not really want much "stuff" anymore. I would like to try to sell some of my clothes and older shoes and perhaps donate some random stuff. I already got rid of 4 generous boxes of "stuff." I have gotten a bit better about buying things and being a pack rat. Anyhow... ... read more

Well this week has been ok. Done loads of climbing and am starting to get a good tan. Went out for dinner into "town" (its a little hick town) last night, with all the ropes staff as we were actually alowed to escape.....YAY! I had a buffet of seafood which was pretty good but I still prefer NZ seafood. But then this kiwi guy got some ribs, and oh my god they were the best and biggest ribs I have ever seen/had ever!!! We had a trial with kids yesterday and lets just say it was one of the local schools and I almosted wanted to back hand a couple of them, they are so rude and have no respect, but once I had finished with them they were changed people, as I was so ... read more

I really struggled with which lame pop culture reference to use as a segue into the entry for our five day stay in Des Moines. I originally went with "Oooh, Baby do you know what that's worth?" but I thought Field of Dreams was more appropriate since we were staying on an Iowa farm and the actual site where the movie was filmed is less than a hundred miles from here. Throw in the fact that our next stop is the Badlands of South Dakota, where Kevin Costner directed his socially conscious western epic Dances With Wolves, and the choice seemed clear. But the point of all this is to say that Iowa, and more specifically Des Moines, might actually be heaven, or as close an approximation as we are ... read more

We arrived in Boise late last night. The aunt had beds ready and we crashed out. The drive was a long one, we caught the 7:20 ferry out of Bremerton, Seattle at 8:20 and we were on the road. (The ferry gave us, and specifically Little Z, a nice wake up time to run around before sitting in the truck for hours). Kennewick was the lunch stop. Towing a trailer for the first time makes for nervous parking... finding a place that we can get into and out of safely. Walmart allows for a monstrous parking lot and a trailer taking up 6 spots is unnoticed. McD's was a good stop this time as the climbing toys again gave Little Z a place to burn off some energy. As we were finishing up our lunch ... read more

Hey this is Danny. here goes. Zappa got here no prob. We gathered up the suitcase and headed for a sports bar to watch the Spurs, but we got shut out. we went to plan B, beers and pizzas at my house. wait but first we stopped by Buddy's Place for our first beer. there was an antique dino-band playing some texas two-step music. then we split. i had laid in a 12 pack of shiner, 4 tall guiness cans and a six of MGD at home . Ed managed to offend a complete stranger about 15 minutes after entering the house, so that worked out well. Laura's friend Julia had committed the grevious sin of calling the Lakers a bunch of whiners, so the EDGE let her have it. We stayed up til 5am, ... read more

Day 15 and 16 - Friday and Saturday 8 and 9 June 2007 - LA and Universal Studios Well, on Friday morning we left San Simeon via a really nice, fairly straight freeway and made our way to LA. We made pretty good time and arrived around 1pm and went straight to Universal Studios for the afternoon. I love theme parks!!! lol There are some great rides here and especially as they are movie themed, I love them even more!! The Mummy ride was a fave with us all, as well as the Jurassic Park ride and we all really enjoyed the back lot tour of the studios. It was so cool to see props and buildings that had been used in real movies. Some that I remember include: Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives; lake ... read more

Morning All! Sorry we've not got round to writing anything up here yet but we've been busy DOING STUFF! Our New York hostess and tour guide, the lovely Vicky, helped us to achieve so much in a few days. Fortunately we gained 5 hours on the way over, so we could cram even more in! Upon arrival we were whisked on the subway (which looks exactly like the films!) to Vicky's apartment on the 25th floor of a block in Downtown Manhatten overlooking Ground Zero. What an incredible place to live! Then it was straight into travel-mode with a steak dinner washed down with champagne in the 5-star Ritz Carlton hotel, followed by cocktails on the roof terrace watching the sunset over the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty. Fortunately Vicky works at the ... read more

Sitka, Alaska North America » United States » Alaska » Sitka By historianherbJune 8th 2007Herbert Abrams We have finally arrived at our first port of call which is Sitka Alaska. The cruise ship can't dock at Sitka so we have to take small boats from the cruise ship to the dock. Sitka, Alaska is a small Alaskan town which originally was populated by the Native group called the Tlingit. Later on Russian people came and took over the town of Sitka. The town today is has a mixture of Native and Russian influence. During my trip to Sitka I went sea Kayaking. T... read more
