Northern Yosemite Tuesday 23rd September 2008 Well, this surpassed our expectations! The Northern part of Yosemite is sensational; high rugged peaks, thick pine forest, crystal clear mountain lakes and huge granite outcrops and vertical faces, which some intrepid mountaineers were climbing. It is further to drive to get to these northern parts of the national park and then one needs to do a lot of hiking about to enjoy the full experience, so maybe that is why less tourists venture up here and go to the valley instead. It is high up, but the drive up the Tioga Road is OK, in fact we drove some far more winding routes with nasty vertical drops over the last week crossing the Sierra to get here. Only once did we both feel a bit dizzy for a few ... read more

Day 2 Day two started out waking up in Lovelock, NV at the Covered Wagon Motel. I got up, got ready, then went to pack the car. I looked across the street and noticed two guys across the street dressed in black and white stripes. They were inmates from the detention center that was right behind them. I got in the car and drove next door to the grocery store. When I got out of the car I noticed that the community has an older population. All the women had feathered hair and the younger teens were polite and courteous. It was like I stepped into the twilight zone. I went to get back on the interstate and got lost. It took me 20 min to find it, but I found it. I got on the ... read more

So i am still hanging at the gypsy cafe, and it has been amazing. this place and these people have been so good to me, and have taught me so much. i have changed a lot since i have been here and feel more connected with myself and mother earth. tomorrow though i will be the first of four wwoofers to journey off in 6 weeks. i am headed to eugene to meet up with a great person (named loren) and do some dancing. i will hitch there tomorrow morning, tonight they are holding a celebration and dinner in my honor (i feel so special!). i have been thinking about it though and i do believe i will come back to the gypsy cafe some time next week, as i will be going south any way ... read more

My trip from Ocean Shores to Newport South Beach, Oregon was quite pleasant, although the mist started to roll in as I approached the coast and by the time I had got set up it was quite cool. The next morning was the same so I put on my wind suit and went for a walk on the beach, which is just 150 yards away and was lovely. After a shower I drove into Newport and stopped at the Chamber of Commerce for area information as well as the proverbial “where is Wal-Mart?” Incidentally, local folks frequently apologize that their Wal-Mart isn’t a Wal-Mart Superstore! Sign of the times I guess. The next morning was the same, but I decided that I wasn’t going to sit home for the next ten days so after my beach ... read more

Headed straight to California Adventure today - the newest of the Disney Theme Parks. First “ride” - Soaring over California; a very unique ride which has you belted into seats which raises you off the ground and tips you over a giant screen as if you are on a hang glider whizzing over the beautiful spots in California - very cool! Made our way around the park in a more orderly fashion this time to save the feet - and before long we reach the ride from hell (in my opinion). One of those ones that you sit down and get shot straight up at a million miles and hour - one that you couldn’t pay me enough to get on! Well, Steve and the girls were keen so I just sat and watched like an ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry: "Rollin' Into Memphis" by Dash Rip Rock, "Memphis in the Meantime" by John Hiatt, "Sure Smells Like BBQ" by Big Joe and the Dynaflows and "Smokie, Part 2" by the Bill Black Combo. Suggested Food and Drink For this Entry: Slow smoked pork ribs and a few ice cold longneck beers. Seeing there is no entry about the great time I had kicking it with Lil' Ed and Blues Imperials, you've probably already assumed I face planted into bed back in my hotel room after leaving Al Hrabosky's. Well, other than me throwing in a stop for food on the way back to my hotel, you assumed correctly. But, the early night made it easy for me to get up early, get my act together and head my rental Suzuki tank ... read more

For the last 5 days, I have been in Disneyland. I had the best time ever. We arrived at night. It took us a while to get from the airport to our hotel, but we got there, and just in time. When we went into our hotel room, we heard a loud BANG! We rushed outside. We saw the beautiful Disney fireworks. It was an amazing sight. The next day, we bought a 5 day pass for each of us and walked down to Disneyland. As we entered, the first thing I noticed was how happy it was. Everybody was smiling. It was fantastic. On the first day, we went to Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. When we were in Tomorrowland, I told dad that we had to ride space mountain. We walked up, but it wasn’t working ... read more

Sugested Listening for this Entry: Dr. "Feelgood" Potts CDs Make It Talk & Going Down to Memphis Suggested Food and Drink: By this time, anything you can get your hands on. Now I've been hearing a whole lot of talk going around lately about what a woman really wants in the bedroom. Clarence Carter said he be strokin'. Bobby Rush said he be wearing it out. Now there's another guy going around saying a woman wants a man to stand up in it. But let me tell you what a woman told me... -from Dr. "Feelgood" Potts' spoken introduction to his song "Make It Talk" In the 1980's, two songs were released that helped create a mini-genre within the Southern Soul field, the bravado song. Those songs, "Strokin'" by Clarence Carter and "Candy Licker" by Marvin ... read more

Suggested Listening for this Entry: To get a real feel for today's Beale St., you'll need to go hear a rather pedestrian blues / R&B bar band somewhere. The band may have a good singer or a couple of decent musicians, but nothing about the band will overly impress you because you can only hear so many covers of "Mustang Sally" and "Pride and Joy". With that said, I'll suggest you harken back to the glory days of Beale St. and listen to "Further On Up Road" by Bobby "Blue" Bland, "Drving Wheel" by Junior Parker, "Don't Start Me to Talking" by Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller) and anything by Ike Turner's Rhythm Kings. Suggested Food and Drink for this Entry: Ditto the listening suggestion...for today's Beale St., grab the biggest Bud Light draft you ... read more
