I wasn't ready for the change of scenery as we glided out from Steamboat Springs. Lush green mountains faded behind us to rolling hills of sage, windswept rocks, and dry grass to every horizon. Whyoming?! is what I wanted to yell out as I sat in our A/C-free car, going in and out dazedly from sleep to moon-land scapes for hours. Out of battery! ... read more

27th May, 2009. Thermopolis Down to the Mineral Springs this morning and in for a relaxing soak, nice. Talked to a couple of locals who firmly believe that the minerals have done their aches and pains a considerable amount of good. There are 28 minerals in the water (don't ask me what they are). Twenty minutes was enough in the 104 degree F (40C) bath. Down town and into the local Cultural museum, which was worth a look, a lot of History here and great exhibits, they have the original "hole in the wall bar" (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) on display. Photography is banned in the museum but I managed a postcard for you. Lots of local Indian dispalys as well, in the cellar. Weather was good again but this evening we had a ... read more

25th May, 2009 Casper, Wyoming Headed off early as we were expecting thunderstorms, yes it was cold and got to 53F (11.5c). The rain managed to hold off most of the way, but we drove the last 50miles in sometimes heavy rain (yes we have learnt our lesson, we won't be bragging about the weather over here anymore). Got to Casper, rain stopped and we headed off for a look around, Casper is an oil town, although you wouldn't think it with the highest fuel prices to date (why is that, they pump it, process it and charge more for it than someone down the road who has to pay freight?). Went for a walk along the Platte River that evening, river is famous for its trout, Cut throat, Brown, Rainbow and more, they do a ... read more

Grand Tetons to Thermopolis to Sturgis August 6, 7, 8 (Wed, Thurs, Fri) Grand Tetons We had planned to leave Yellowstone by way of the east entrance and to reach Thermopolis via Cody, but that entrance was closed and several people we met at Yellowstone had raved about the beauty of Grand Teton National Park, so we drove that way (south). We did not have time to stop and take a hike, but did make several stops at roadside pullovers along Jackson Lake, and at the ranger station at Jenny Lake we got maps (and re-stocked the pantry at a little grocery store). The terrain was lovely and definitely a “next time” destination. One roadside stop included signs about the geology of the range and a small garden of native plants, including a lot of ... read more

August 1-August 2rd Leaving Yellowstone, stop in Cody and Thermopololis We left Yellowstone after a wonderful stay, and came down the mountain pass back to Cody. We wanted to stop in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, which was supposed to be a wonderful museum. There are 5 museums there, the Draper Historical Center, a Western Art Museum, a Buffalo Bill Museum, an American Indian Museum and a Guns and Ammo Museum. We only went through the Draper Center. It had a lot of information about the Yellowstone Ecosystem, and had a number of interactive displays. Simone was quickly bored, and became more of a liability than a blessing. She started touching all the displays that had signs saying “do not touch” and she was very, very busy. Elise was interested for a short time, and then ... read more

On our way through Wyoming we came upon Thermopolis, a huge dinosaur bone discovery site. This is the home of "Jimbo", the 2nd largest Supersaurus found in the world. He sure was super. :) They had a lot of cool dinos, and a great concise and interesting display showing the evolution and ages of dinosaurs and the reptiles/fishies that came before. It was neat, and they also offer these day packages to go and actually dig in their dig site, with a little training in the how-tos. Then we moved on to Guernsey, Wyoming, where there are two major points of interest dating back from the time of The Oregon Trail. First, wagon ruts. Yep. The wagons rode over the same slab of sandstone in such volume for so long that their wagon wheels actually ... read more

Our present Wyoming governor Freudenthal repeated an insider joke a while back that goes "Never trust a man (politician?) who comes from a place that has a higher number for population than it has for elevation" or words to that effect. Since he is a native of Thermopolis that should imply he can be trusted whereas those from Cheyenne and 15 other towns can't be because there are only 16 towns in Wyoming with a population of more than 4000 and only a small area that is lower than 4000 feet. Today's "Wyoming from the Inside" will concentrate on my town of Thermopolis and specifically the Hot Springs State Park. I can best tell what it is like to live in such a small town with pictures. And they don't lie.... read more

We drove from Thermopolis to Cody on Saturday March 25,2006. Fifty five miles from our town is this little place. It is kind of booming now due to oil field expansion but that doesn't mean much traffic. Just a notice on the only motel that they offer "crew rates". There is a nice rodeo arena-- good little amateur rodeo on Labor Day if you like to wait a loooooong time for action. Mont and I put on a few amateur rodeos in our younger days and abhor the sloooow pace.... read more

If you see the word "Wyoming" and think "Jackson", you are thinking from the outside. We moved to Thermopolis 12 years ago and hope to give you an insight into how we residents see our state. First of all, we agree it is crazy that our capital is way down there in a far off corner of this sparsely populated state. The joke is,I was told-- that's so it is easier for Colorado to run this "territory's" business. Sometimes we feel it isn't really just a joke though. The main thing to realize about Wyoming is that it is a long drive to anything, whether it is the capital or just another town. Our kids ride school buses to high school sports events farther than many people in the east ever travel in their lives. We ... read more
