Distance: 13.2 miles to trail fork Rating: Difficult When my parents first took my sister and me up to Wyoming about twenty years ago, they made a point of taking us past the Grand Tetons. I remember being in absolute awe of the imposing wall of rock that towered over the valley floor. The Teton Range is nothing like what we see in Colorado. The Front Range mountains gradually climb, starting first with the foothills and eventually rising up to the highest fourteen thousand foot peaks. The Tetons, on the other hand, are “fault block mountains” that jut out of the valley floor like jagged teeth. There are no foothills, just steep slopes. Grand Teton National Park is a region of stark contrasts. The flat, glacially-carved valley of Jackson Hole gives way suddenly to the alpine ... read more

The views around here are fantastic, especially in good lighting conditions. Those Grand Tetons are awesome. The drive to Jackson is Classic Wyoming, just beautiful. Way back when we traversed Wyoming, from Evanston to Rawlings on Interstate 80, we had to agree with our Salt Lake City receptionist's questioning of why we should visit the state, and she was born in the state. It can be desolate and arid in that part of the state but we think she had explored much of her own state. Elsewhere, Wyoming is fabulous. It's so peaceful once you are out of Jackson and even the town is not noisy, well we never noticed excessive noise, apart from our terrible log cabins at the Wagon Wheel Village, the worst we''ve ever experienced in any hotel/motel, anywhere in the world! It's the third day of our vacation and today's agenda was the Grand Teton National Park. A little history...the Grand Teton Range is made up of a series of jagged topped mountain peaks. There are no obstructions to seeing the Grand Tetons because the area around them is incredibly flat. The tallest mountain/peak is the Grand Teton at 13,770 feet with the Middle Teton at 12,804 feet, Mount Owen at 12,928 feet, South Teton at 12,514 feet and several other smaller mountains. Grand Teton National Park also contains Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake which are crystal clear lakes. So beautiful. We started out our morning entering the park off Teton Village and were surprised to come across two moose (cow and bull) enjoying an early morning water and snack. Even from a distance they were huge. ... read more

That's what Grand Tetons means. Or something like that. I don't speak French but Jake did research on it and that's what he tells us. How whoever named them decided to call them that I don't know. Doesn't seem to be much resemblance. What they do resemble is another little slice of heaven. Ohmygosh, I love the Tetons. Here, I could live. Mountains everywhere, beautiful lakes and rivers, no humidity...aahhh! Of course, there is the pesky drop of snow in the winter but everyplace has a down side right? I guess I would just have to learn to ski. But for now I will enjoy it on my own two feet. And another's 4 feet. Pique your interest? Let me tell you about it first. The boys were starting to get a little reluctant about ... read more

Hello everyone - We're staying just outside of Grand Teton National Park tonight, and tomorrow we're hoping to snag a site within the park. Our first night of the trip we stayed at a great little campground in Glendale, Utah. The campground was bordered by apple orchards which were great for playing frisbee. We also got to see (and feed carrots to) a couple burros and a couple alpacas (maybe they were juvenile llamas, I don't know). The girls were great travelers all that way. Last night we were at a national forest campground near Bear Lake, in the upper east corner of Utah. We were up in the aspen with wild roses everywhere, although they were not yet in bloom. We learned that there is a cave just across the Idaho border, which was ... read more

We had a very long drive from Leavenworth, actually our longest continous drive ever. The distance we covered today was 788 miles or 1268 km. However since there was nothing we deemed exciting on the way, it was well worth the long drive. We arrived to our cabin late at night and in the morning we were greeted by the dogs. We woke up to a complete different environment, much colder and very beautiful. We went to Jackson Hole, the nearest city to the Grand Teton NP to complete a few winter items that were missing and a bowl of Chili at Wendy's. We then made our way to the park, which welcomed us with beautiful vistas. Driving around the park offered us the most unforgettable sights, including a bald eagle, elk and moose, more than ... read more

Day 54..... We arrived in Jackson just in time to observe the town's oldest tradition - a staged 'shootout'! Yeeha! Naturally, we jumped at the opportunity to dust off our cowboy hats and join in the fun. Afterwards we had time to explore this western-style town along it's wooden boardwalks and sample the local brew! The next few days were devoted to exploring Grand Teton National Park, which hosts a magnificent mountain range of the same name . We drove to the top of Summit Mountain for a birdseye view of the surrouding scenery. Equally spectacular, a Bald Eagle flew so closely past us that we could feel the breeze from its wings! Later we were told that this is considered a sign of good luck by the Native Indians! To round off the day, we ... read more

We pulled into Colter Bay by 11am. Ed and I had a really nice quiet drive as we let the kids sleep in our bed when we pulled out. We have done this periodically over the summer and it works out nicely as we get a few quiet hours to enjoy the scenery and they get the extra sleep which they seem to need. We saw lots of wildlife but didn’t choose to stop. The coolest was when we saw an entire herd of buffalo in a valley, dozens if not up to a hundred. The views on the way down were terrific, mountains and lakes, valleys and flowers. We explored Colter Bay Village as the site wasn’t quite ready when we got there. Our campground was on Jackson Lake, there was a nice marina for ... read more

Hi Everyone, So when I said that my last post would probably be my last post, I was just kidding! I found another wireless connection so I figured I would post some pictures of the Grand Tetons National Park. Coming from Yellowstone to the Tetons was quite a change of pace. The tetons has a laid back atmosphere and a lot less people sightseeing. The mountains in the tetons are about 12,000-13,000 tall and a considered a very young mountain range that is still growing a couple millimeters a year. The mountains are really rocky with jagged peaks and glaciers that feed into the lakes surrounding the range. The wildflowers were in bloom and very colorful with purples, reds, oranges, and yellows everywhere. There wasn't too much wildlife to be seen but we managed to see ... read more
