Jackson Hole Wyoming and the Grand Teton National Park was not really on our agenda when we took off from Maine at the beginning of the month, but I had heard from so many people that it was worth the trip that we traveled the extra miles to get there just before darkness fell. We actually found one hotel room available in Dubois, Wyoming next to the Bighorn Sheep Museum. Luckily the local restaurant was still open with a great local beer and buffalo burgers on the grill. Another great frontier meal. The next morning we treked into the Grand Teton Nation Park and took in a hike. We took a boat ride across a glacier lake to the other side to begin our journey meeting a family from Massachusetts along the way. We then hiked ... read more

So we left Ogden, UT, almost five days ago and when we did we also said so long to Starbucks! I could write an entire entry on our coffee escapades but let’s suffice it to say that we have been dying for good coffee until today, Saturday, August 9th. Gas station coffee just isn’t cutting it for us coffee snobs! Anyway we left Ogden and headed north on our way to the Grand Tetons. We made one stop along the way at Lava Hot Springs in Idaho. I had been to hot springs before but this one was different. The 4 pools ranged from 104-112 degrees F and were lined with actual rocks. Many springs put in swimming pool like structures but not this one. I cannot tell you how much I needed to sit in ... read more

Hello to everyone whose taken the time to "track" The Sadowski-Sherffius-Salinas' Back To Nature Vacation! The Sherffius' and Salinas' separated from The Sadowski's on Day 4. The Sadowski's were so amazed by Yellowstone and all it had to offer, that they headed back up north (from the "Ranch") to view Old Faithful. While the Sherffius' - Salinas' headed down south to The Grand Tetons. Sherffius-Salinas - It's absolutely breath-taking to see the Teton Mountains reflecting off of Jenny Lake! We tried to capture the beauty of the mountains (please see pictures) however, seeing them in person has been unbelievable! Being The Sherffius-Salinas' are "doers" we took the opportunity to take a Sceanic Float Trip on The Snake River. We started in Deadman's Bar and ended in Moose Junction. While "floating down river" we were witness to ... read more

Wow talk about mountains, the Tetons are huge, (thats what she said). We were amazed how tall and impressive the mountain chain was. We went to Jenny Lake (we couldnt't stop pronouncing it like Forest Gump), took a boat across the lake to hike up to see hidden falls and inspiration point. Amy made a point of not telling the girls what to do or not to do, and if they died it was their own fault (tough love). Along the way Emma made a new friend. The hikes are getting easier or we are just getting use to the elavations (we were at about 8,000 plus feet above sea level). After reaching inspiration point the girls were ready to return, but Amy wanted to hike and see more, this turned out to be a great ... read more

On July 8, 2008, we left Red Rock RV Park at Island Park, Idaho, and arrived at The Grand Teton National Park (Gros Ventre Campground - pronounced Grow Vaunt). We were dry camping here as this national park had no facilities other than a dump station for your black and gray water and a spigot with fresh water so you could fill your fresh water tank. For most Rvers wanting to fill their water tank that meant hauling their RV up to where the fresh water spigot was located at the very front of the campground. However, we do have a 45 gallon water bladder we put in the back of the truck and take up to the water spigot and fill, then bring that back to the RV and transfer the water into our water ... read more

Tuesday 7/15 Went on a hike up the Fourth of July Creek and onwards to 4th of July Lake. It was a mostly uphill climb 550ft over 2.5 miles. We arrived at an alpine lake. Nearby was a group of back country campers. Along the shores of the lake there was a hatch coming off. Some kind of fork tailed mayfly. They were crawling all over us, which was a pleasent break from the mosquitos, of which we have lived among since arriving in Idaho. Another reason to love Oregon; very few mosquitos. Much of the forest had been burned 3-4 years ago which creates a soil rich in potash. This in turn creates a plethora of wildflowers. We don't hike very fast as there is always some new flower to investigate. We also were now ... read more

We crossed the border into Idaho and headed straight to the visitors centre for some info. We met a couple outside who were heading the same way and they had vacationed in the area before. They gave us the heads up on all the different things we could do and the Grand Tetons was one of them. (So thank you Eleanor & Dick) Once we'd found a hotel in "Idaho Falls" to settle into for a few days, we were ready for the sights.... Again we were well impressed with "The Grand Tetons"..... Not only with the views, but the abundance of wild flowers that had now come into flower. This park's mountain range is very popular with climbers, hikers and photographers. The exposed crystalline rocks give the mountains their dramatic appearance in any season. ... read more

Grand Teton national park was our stay for 4 nights and as this was bear country we opted not to use our own tent for this and used a purpose built bigger tent with 4 bunk beds and a real door. It was a bit of a shock when we first saw it but it was comfy and there was a wood burner in it if it got too cold. It did get a little nippy at night, but overall was a good deal. Generally anything in Grand Teton or Yellowstone National Parks are relatively expensive at this time of year so this was a good cheap option ($43 a night) whilst actually being in the park. Had a really good restaurant on site which was "cheap as chips" for the quality. The areas are known ... read more

Friday, July 11, 2008 Driggs, WY to Rawlins, WY Today we start our trek home. Before leaving Teton Valley, we stop at the Wildlife Art Museum. While I am parking, Donna spots an eagle and a hawk in the distance. The hawk, lighter and quicker than the eagle, climbs above the eagle and dives into it repeatedly. The eagle fights off the hawk until the pair is far out of sight. She is very disappointed not to be able to capture the scene on film. The wildlife artwork is really amazing. There are winning examples of a bear decorating contest from regional high schools. One is furred with sharpened wooden pencils and the paws and pads are the eraser ends. The route takes us through Grand Tetons National Park to Moran, WY. then along Wyoming Centennial ... read more
