The next morning I woke up to Bryan's cheery voice saying he was on the ferry and on his way to Seattle. I got up and got ready just in time for him to pick me up. It was raining, which just made me feel that I was truely experiencing Seattle. I also enjoyed the cool air since it had been in the high ninties and hundreds for the past few weeks in SLC. We drove around looking for a place to eat breakfast and saw more of Seattle in the daylight. All the while chatting and catching up. We wondered around Pike's Place Market and had a snack at a Thai/Morroccan Restaurant.Bryan wanted me to see the new modern city library. We wandered around admiring the arcitecure and "modernness" of the colors and design. Ian ... read more

Seattle Day 3 Seattle is a little weird but a cool city nonetheless. The first thing that struck me was the 'bus tunnel' the buses are sent underground almost like a subway system underneath downtown. Arrived at the hostel with few navigation hiccups from my part and they let me check in straight away - GREAT! Locked my stuff up abd headed straight out. After getting my bearings in town, i headed down to the waterfront to see what the story was down there. Its pretty cool, all the piers are there (surprisingly!) and loads of food places! Just kept walking as i had no idea where i was going or what i wanted to do so as soon as things start looking a litte less busy i would just make a change in direction. This ... read more

I woke up at seven with Brea and we are playing SORRY! on the computer. Everyone else got up around 9 and Roy made cheese omelets and bacon and we shared our breakfast muffins. We all had a chance to havce a hot shower, which was awesome, considering we hadn't showered since Friday night before we left! Nikki fought with Dot over food and Dot wouldn't even come out to me, if Nikki was by me. They got over it eventually though. We drove to Mt. Rainier N.P. hoping to camp at the White River Campground, but it was disgustingly full. We drove out and are now camped in Mount Baker and Snoqualamie N.F. Grantwood is 15 miles north of here which is good, we need gas badly. Mt. Rainier N.P. was breathtaking. The trees are ... read more

I arrived in Seattle about 1 hour late as my plane was delayed getting out of SLC due to weather and "mechanical difficulties". I planned the visit to see my friend Bryan who is stationed with the Nevy in Bremerton which is accross the water from Seattle. However, at the last minute Bryan found out that his work schedule had changed and that he would have to work the overnight shift the entire time I was visiting. My plan of coming in the late evening so he could pick me up now no longer would work. I emailed my friend Ian who lives in Seattle and whom I had met through his sister, Tamara over Thanksgiving. Ian offered to pick me up from the airport and let me crash at his pad while Bryan worked and ... read more

It’s hot. The sun is at its zenith. It’s noon. A grandmother just drove by making an obscene gesture. Here we are, walking as a group of fourteen, northward along the Old Jackson Highway near Toledo, WA. We just received one of the many “one-fingered peace signs”. Granny was certainly lazy and forgot to bring up the other, so three of us responded, giving her the full symbol we walk for. A peace walk. We walk for peace some three hundred miles. We walk to educate ourselves about the nuclear issues across Washington State and beyond. We march to bring awareness to others and to remember the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Their 60th anniversary nears as we walk for hope, with the prayers that acts of war will become a part of an ugly ... read more

Today we reached the beach! My sister and her kids went with us and we headed north out of Portland, then west to Astoria. There we crossed a 4.1-mile bridge over the Columbia River, with a main span of 1232 feet, making it the longest continuous truss in the world. I told the kids that but they were less than impressed. They did like crossing the bridge though. Construction of the bridge started in 1962 and finished in 1966. The approach ramp on the Oregon side curves through a full 360 degrees. Again, the kids didn't seem to care. After crossing the bridge into Washington, we headed for the Long Beach Lighthouse, the first of many we would see on this trip. The view from there was awesome. It would be the first of many awesome ... read more

It was really wonderful to come home just in time for glorious afternoon weather, a perfect welcome, and fireworks on TV! Here's a quick wrap-up of my impressions of travel in Europe. Great stuff in Germany, et al.: * German toilets (use less water and flush better). * Public pay toilets (almost always worth the price). * Euro-style windows (and doors). * Cathedrals. * Sparkling mineral water. * Eisbecher!! * Eierlikör (an essential ingredient in my favorite Eisbechern). * Trains, trams and buses. * Sidewalk bike paths. * Beer gardens. * Their laid-back and healthy attitude about alcohol. * Drea and her friends and family, of course! Stuff I missed about the USA: * Free refills. * Table napkins. * Really cold drinks. Hell, even the ice cream in Germany is lukewarm. * Having "Y", "Z", ... read more

PAT: We're actually back from our trip now but I'm determined to finish this. I thought Katie would write more than she has but she seems to have lost interest. If you want to hear more from her, email her and tell her how much you've enjoyed her posts and that you hope she writes more. Today we went to Mount St. Helens. While I wanted to go there, I was not prepared for what I saw. You can't begin to comprehend the massive scale of devastation until you see it first hand. Even 25 years after the blast, the massive destruction is very evident. Ragged tree stumps, blown down logs, and barren mud field below the summit still stand as testament to earth's awesome power. Out to about 8 miles, the blast travels at 670 ... read more

PAT: Ok, it's clear to me that we won't be keeping this as up to date as I once thought. I had hope to compose entries that were witty, poignant, and informative, but that takes too long. For now, you get the Reader's Digest condensed versions so I can get some pix posted. July 4th - Waterfalls & Fireworks. Today we traveled with my sister and her family along the Columbia River gorge. Unwittingly, we also became part of a 4th of July parade. I forget the names of the towns, but after our first route to see many of the waterfalls along the Columbia River was blocked, we went a different way. Soon there was a big backup. Eventually we figured out that a parade had just gone through and we were right behind it. ... read more

I found myself staring at nothing but a light blue sky while laying on a floating boat ramp on Lake Crescent, listening to Ike hit the water with a stick. That was it. Nothing to contemplate. No questions about life and existence. Just that moment. That was at the end of the day that started at 3am with the intention to hike for many miles… Breakfast was at Port Angeles after attempting to eat at two different small diners that were just too weird for us to stay at. It was also after going through an abandoned house on the side of Highway 101. We started the hike after going through two more abandoned houses that were built identically right next to each other. Lunch was at the campsite of the Hot Springs (not close to ... read more
