Our inn keeper Linda provided us with some super ideas for a road trip outside the Seattle area.
Off we headed - starting out by using the Washington state ferry to Bainbridge Island. The ferry is huge - cars are loaded onto the ferry and then passengers are welcome to sit upstairs in the lounge. The ferry has a restaurant and a bar onboard. The trip takes around 30 minutes and cost $20. Great views of Seattle are seen from onboard the ferry.
Once we disembarked off the ferry we drove through numerous quaint small towns including Suquamish, Poulso, Port Gamble and Chimacum.
We drove through Hood Canal and then over the Bridge - The Hood Canal Bridge is a floating bridge located in the U.S. state of Washington that carries Washington State Route 104 across Hood Canal and connects the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas.
The scenery was amazing - surrounded by evergreen forests and the bay. We had lunch at the local Safeway food store at Port Townsend where we filled up on hot soup which was greatly appreciated on this cold, showering type of day. Across the road was a mariner and a dry dock.
It was an interesting drive through the mariner looking at all boats big and small either being repaired or being built.
Next we drove to Fort Worden state park. I imagine this park would be jam packed in the summer holidays - today their was only a couple of RV's in the park though. A few keen fisherman were also out braving the cold and the wind. The road in the park finishes at the old lighthouse which in inaccessible. Tours can be organised by appointment only.
We took another ferry from Port Townsend to Coupeville - cost for the car and passengers was $14. The ferry only goes once an hour so we had a bit of a wait before the car was loaded into the ferry. You are welcome to walk to the shops while waiting to board the ferry but we chose to wait it out in the car (too cold for us). This ferry was much smaller than the one we took earlier in the day and trips on this ferry are often cancelled due to rough seas. Luckily today all was good even though the wind was blowing quite strong.
This area
of Washington reminded us of parts of Alaska - in particular the Homer area - where boating and fishing support the towns economy. Although only a couple of hours drive from Seattle you feel like your in a whole new world - being the nature lovers we are - it was spectacular scenery.
As the sun sets early around 4.30pm we unfortunately didn't get to see Deception Pass or a few other scenic vistas - but hey you can't see it all.
Driving home on the interstate 5 we caught sight of a Harley Davidson dealer - North Cascades so we popped in and checked out the bikes and grabbed a few souvenir t shirts.
It rained quite hard on the way home this evening And the roads were very busy - being peak time in the city. We arrived home around 8pm and had a great night listening to our inn - keeper Linda and another guest entertaining us with some piano and clarinet music around the fireplace. What a fantastic way to finish the day.
Just a little about our b&b that feels so much like home -
The house is just above
downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill is known for its older homes, shops, restaurants, coffee houses, parks, and theaters. The Harvard-Belmont Historical District, a protected area of fine, elegant homes reflecting the robust architecture of yesteryear.
Built in 1903, this B&B is a comfortable, mid-sized home, characteristic of turn-of-the-century Seattle architecture. The inn-keeper Linda is a lovely lady who is in her 70's. She keeps the place immaculate and is a wealth on local Seattle knowledge. Linda loves to have a chat with her guests and likes guests to treat her home like their own..she is a real gem - this is our second visit here and Linda certainly feels like part of our lives now...we are so lucky to have found her in this busy metropolitan city.
PS - angus the cat aka Pudset comes as part of the household package - she is gorgeous but is quite temperamental - which only adds more character to this delightful b&b!
