Well, one important thing to realize when we go to China- some of our usual websites (YouTube!) will be blocked and inaccessible...hence the move from Wordpress to Travelblog- a participant currently in the program let us know it's been blocked for awhile there. Hotmail apparently has problems also, so if you email me, please do so at stacinoelle@gmail.com. Martin's email is phearmart@gmail.com. This weekend we'll be spending moving some more of our junk and celebrating my friend Jen's 23rd birthday! I've been fortunate enough to be friends with Jen since we were in the 6th grade, and am so grateful that we are still in each other's lives. I plan on taking Martin on a date tomorrow (shh, location still to be disclosed) and then we'll go to a family friends bbq tomorrow night. It's bittersweet ... read more

today i woke up, got some coffee then dropped off my bike at the shop next door, i rode a little too hard the day before and broke a spoke in my bike, boo. around noon i had to go and pick up my mom from the sea-tac airport and then we headed into the city. my mom really wanted to see beefy men throwing big fish around and i wanted to see some local music, so we headed to pikes place. we enjoyed some yummy and fresh fish and chips at the market, then shopped a little. the market is just a bunch of random kiosks set up with everything from silver to caricatures to beautiful flowers and kettle corn. we walked around and took pictures of crazy talented out there street performers, one of ... read more

i left the aussies last night and drove to seattle to meet up with bridget for her birthday. we met up at a seedy bar called redwood in capitol hill, i felt right at home. this morning bridgey and i went on a bike ride to get coffee and breakfast. then ryan met up, we made some cookies and went on a ride around seattle. before we made it to golden gardens beach, bridge got a flat, luckily one of her friends rode by and patched her flat. we took some pictures and hung out on the beach for an hour then headed back towards the university park. after our exhausting day we made a yummy salmon dinner, hung out with bridgets roommates and passed out... read more

And so begins my travel blog. I haven't left yet, but tonight, after Bumbershoot, is when I have to finally, completely begin to pack everything up and prepare to leave. I need you so much closer So come on, come on Death Cab was, as always, beautiful at Bumbershoot. Also lonely. Once again no one to make out with, eh? No one really at all this time after Nico had to go handle some drama. I feel like I need someone so much closer. Though I'm not sure who that should be at this point. What a silly--or, perhaps, perfect?--time to leave for the other side of the world. I also went to the One Pot bumbershoot dinner where everyone who ate had to contribute something based around the year and revolutionary spirit of 1968. I ... read more

And the medal winners are: GOLD - Sony VAIO VGN-TZ340 (rosé) My best-ever impulse purchase, for an accidental reason. I had no idea how helpful the built-in webcam would be, but free ooVoo video calls home were a lifeline for LG and her parents and thereby also for me. Plus, the every-other-day video calls provided a neat justification for me to have the laptop and WLAN (wireless internet) in the first place. "This? Oh, this is for LG and her parents, you know. Me? Maybe just a little Facebook/Travelblog/Flickr/CNN between calls...." The built-in SD slot made it quick and easy to upload my day's photos to the laptop. I wish I had switched over to the Flickr desktop Uploadr sooner; it was much better than the standard web uploader over slow/less-reliable connections. I was seriously annoyed ... read more

The Nintendo DS Lite appears to be the only one of my many rechargeable gadgets whose charger is NOT dual-voltage. This means a simple plug adapter won't cut it... a step-down transformer is necessary to prevent DS fryage. Step-down transformers are almost literally bricks to carry around. They suck. And for one appliance? Some posters in online fora say that buying the European adapter from Nintendo works absolutely fine for charging a US DS Lite, but Nintendo's support website actually says you'd be better off buying a whole 'nother DS Lite game console in Europe. I can see where Nintendo might have nefarious corporate reasons for suggesting such a thing, but I'm also not confident in online gamers' having any deep understanding of how electricity works. This is a tough decision, especially since the DS Lite ... read more

In ten days, I embark on my second epic tour of Europe: Deutschland, Czechia, 500 meters' worth of France, and perhaps 45 minutes of Austria. Three years ago, I visited an old friend and made several new friends. Now, my 8-year-old goddaughter and I will connect with all those old-new friends and will meet a high school classmate of my mother's as well. My friend's kids are older, so it'll be great to catch up with them and get to know them all over again. We're also taking my friend's daughter with us to Berlin. Sole guardian of two other-people's-kids, one of whose primary language is not English, in a foreign country... seemed like a good idea at the time. :) My last trip was fast-paced -- 15 cities in a month, half of them solo ... read more

Andrew: And thus, we arrived in Washington, which is distinctly NOT Idaho and distinctly MUCH better. I was happy again, to say the least. Anyway, Washington state laws on hitch hiking are apparently very specific, because every on ramp had a sign near the entrance that said "Freeway Entrance" and some would even have signs which read: "pedestrians, hitchhikers, and bicycles prohibited." We decided to test our luck, and stand in front of the signs (as opposed to behind them) and see how things went with any police which happened to drive by. Again, unlike Idaho, this state did not suck. The police passed us without even slowing down, and we eventually came to get a ride from Vancouver to Aberdine from a man named Dave. Dave drove a big red truck, and when he stopped ... read more
