The Berkshires are beautiful. So many little lakes and streams surrounded by dense forests of grey birch, paper birch, yellow birch, sugar maple, beech, red oak and others . The road dips south into Connecticut, then goes north again into Massachusetts. Who is to tell? The roads and the trees are the same. As with other states in the NE, I drove through Canaan town and valley. Evidence of beaver working the forests around the lakes was exciting, though I didn't see any. The hills got higher and rockier, and the road became more difficult. Deep in the hills I came upon a pristine pond. I was on the verge of shooting past when I was drawn to what looked like an old bed that showed at the waters edge. I stopped and took a photo, ... read more

Still full from dinner last night, we just had some coffee before we headed out for the day. Kitty comfortably on the bed while we went out into the cold. The first stop today was Bennington Pottery Barn. I have had some of this potter for over 25 years and when ever we are in the area, we stop by to pick up new pieces or replace a piece that has broken. Today it was the latter. While the pottery is molded by machine, it is all hand finished to get rid of the rough edges left by the molds and presses. In addition to lots of pottery, they also have two black shop cats, we did not take their picture, because we didn’t want to become social media stars. After our stop for pottery we ... read more

This year for my birthday we decided to spend the weekend in Vermont, specifically Manchester VT. This city itself is nothing special but it is just close enough that it doesn’t take all day to get there and there is a Kimpton hotel, which means Tarragon gets to come along. To get here involves a commuter train and a zip car. We could have rented a car and drove from the city, but rental cars are very expenses in the city and the stress of driving in the city is not worth it. We started with a subway ride to Grand Central Station, luggage and cat in tow. From there it was 2 hours on Metro North to Poughkeepsie, where we picked up the car and had lunch before heading on our way to Vermont. No ... read more

Sadly our time in Vermont is ending tomorrow as we head to Boston. We have absolutely loved it here - the people are friendly and accommodating, the food is great and it’s a beautiful place. The last few days have been filled with relaxing, eating and playing in the snow. For many people, when your seven year old is lying flat on her back in the snow, after careening down an icy hill on a sled, having head-butted the slope, crying and claiming that she “can’t move my legs”, it would be cause for some concern. Luckily Genevieve has given us much experience of her self injury assessment process, and in reality, it was nothing a bit of lunch and a lie on the couch didn’t fix (oh, and surgery to reconnect her spinal cord). Despite ... read more

We always said we were coming to Vermont to eat (us) and play in the snow (them), and so far, it hasn’t disappointed on either account. Had to haul arse from our hotel in Midtown to Mecca (also known as Grand Central Station to those not in the transport way) which was about as much exercise as I had intended for the week. Train trip to Stamford was efficient and easy, as was car pick up and journey onto the Interstate, and before we knew it, we were paying homage at that most American of institutions, the road-side Maccas stop. Some were more reverent than others. Unfortunately it seemed much of the country was also making pilgrimages, and we encountered quite a bit of traffic. But as we headed further north, and more and more snow ... read more

Our planned hike for Vermont was along the AT to a ski area on nearby Bromley Mountain. However, as usual on this trip, it rained all day on Monday when we had planned to do the hike. Since it was our last day in Vermont, and we had about a 4.5 hour drive on Tuesday to get back to Portland for our flight home on Wednesday, we toughed out a couple of very wet and cold miles on the AT trail to Bromley Mt. Vermont has a trail, called the Long Trail, that goes from the southern border with Massachusetts to the northern border with Canada. The southern half of the Long Trail is shared with the Appalachian Trail until the AT turns east toward New Hampshire. So our hike on the AT in Vermont was ... read more

Our dorm rooms last night were insufferably hot and the air was stagnant with no breeze to be had; sleep was sparse. To top it off, the rain built from a slight drizzle at 6 am to more of a light but steady downpour after breakfast. However, by the time we cycled the 7 miles to the ferry, the rain stopped completely. We all took our bikes onto the ferry to cross over Lake Champlain and into Vermont. Once on the other side, the sun peeked out and we began some pretty steady stairstep climbing all the way to picnic at mile 42. Tom had made a beautiful beet salad and I showed a modicum of restraint knowing what lie ahead for the last 20 miles of our ride. I’d dreaded the combined chance of rain ... read more

Ordinarily I might not blog about travel that's really not that far from me physically. Waitsfield is only about 40 minutes due west of me. You can travel only a few minutes from home but wind up being transported through time and have it affect you. The July 4 holiday was weird for a number of people, being smack in the middle of the week. Our old July 4 getaway wasn't available anymore. As an aside, I found out maybe 2 weeks ago we might be able to continue that old getaway but differently next year. Anyway, since our old getaway isn't available yet I hadn't really scheduled anything. An overnight retreat via the Barre tones was offered and since I was open and our events are usually great things to be at, I signed on. ... read more

We used to call our back porch that. We'd go out on the porch and just have some quiet time. It's not as quiet here anymore. Traffic, work, schedules. Barre has grown and changed, not necessarily for the better. We lived in the southwest, that city became too big. Barre may have become too big now. I really wasn't expecting to snag a cabin at one of our state parks this late in the year so when one came up unexpectedly that I happened on, I grabbed. It may have been just what the doctor ordered. The loons, oh that beautiful haunting call, the woods. And I'm not sure what happened but the people around us were all friendly, quiet, respectful. We'd pass each other and say hello. This included their kids. In Barre you run ... read more
