Monday 26th We left Woodsville in Vermont after stopping at a Walmart to get a couple of supplies and then a diner breakfast. We have noticed that although temperatures are cool in the mornings & evenings but getting 18 and 19 occasionally during the day. Riding out of Woodsville we saw the 2 young guys we had met yesterday riding the other way? After a few more miles we then linked up with these guys riding the same way but they come onto the road we were on from a different direction. Situations like this make you question who is doing the right thing and who is doing the wrong. The route turned us off the road we were on and we opted to stop at another Country store for morning tea. After a coffee in ... read more

Saturday 24th: When we awoke today in Williamstown Massachusetts, it was 3 degrees C outside. A nice crisp clear autumn morning. We had a motel breakfast and got started about 8.30. By this time, it had warmed to around 5 degrees. As we rode through town and joined the BDR route which climbed Mt Graylock, it went to around 7 degrees. As you can imagine we had many layers on and looked and felt like the Michelin men! We took the BDR route up Mt Graylock which was a secondary gravel road through the forest, next to a stream, a very scenic and a bit gnarly but a good morning warm up. By the time we reached the summit at 3500' the temperature was back down to 5 degrees. We walked up to the cenotaph/obelisk which ... read more

While studying our next few days, I learned, last night, that Ben & Jerry’s was closed on Sunday and Monday so we decided to change our plans and head to Waterbury today. It’s just something we all really wanted to do….go to Ben & Jerry’s. So right after breakfast we headed on our way. Terry wanted to drive by Lake George, so I set the GPS to take us to Lake George (also a village on the lake) and right up along the Lake and other villages. Again we keep seeing classic and antique cars, but many more than the previous two days!! As we enter Lake George Village we see lots and lots of people. There are chairs lined up along the streets. Every hotel lot is filled. There is no place to park. Finally ... read more

Beautiful VERMONT. I started my trip through this beautiful lush green state at Smuggler's Notch. Camping at the state park was nice and my first time in a lean to. Basically a wooden platform with three walls and a slanted roof. Smuggler's Notch is known for being a path to run supplies to Canada during the war in 1812. The large boulders and tight narrow paths allows travelers a number of hiding space and not be seen. Today there is a very narrow paved road that visitors can drive to the top and back down again, when heading east, you will end up in Stowe, VT. There are a few parking spaces along the road to hike on designated trails. I took the trail to Bingham Falls, because that was the only one I could find ... read more

Sunday: I think everyone knows that Vermont and particularly southern Vermont is known for ski resorts. There are 2 slopes within 25 minutes of my place and I think close to a dozen within an hour drive. But what do those resorts do in the summer? Well they try to make some money and keep some year round staff by having summer activities on the mountain. The chair lifts that go to the top of the mountain get called "scenic chair lifts". Bromley has one of the world's longest alpine slides. It drops 815 feet in elevation and is 2/3 of a mile long! Yes, you take a chairlift up to the top of the slide too. In the evening ludlow had a summer concert series where the local community band was playing. To say it ... read more

Sunday: Today was truly about surviving the warm temperatures. They were well into the 90s with high humidity and I have no AC :( Not many places with AC are dog friendly, and even the stores that are, don't end up being somewhere that you want to hang out at all afternoon. Copper is not a water dog- afraid of the water really. But something had to give to manage the warm temperatures. So we compromised and went and hung out at a swimming hole, but I just went and dipped in the water a few times to cool off. And yes, while I did so, everyone had pity on him while he had anxiety on the shore... Then we went and found a hammock spot in the shade in the later afternoon when a slight ... read more

Sunday: Drove 2 hours basically diagonally across the entire state of Vermont to the best dog place ever called "Dog mountain". It's a 150 acre non-profit where the grounds are dedicated to allowing dogs be free and enjoy the outdoors. "Our mission is to steward and sustain the 150-acre Dog Mountain property in Vermont as a unique national treasure that honors the healing power of “dogs, nature, love, and art,” and to preserve and celebrate the important artistic contributions of Dog Mountain’s iconic creator, Stephen Huneck." There is an art gallery of things for sale that are all dog related and super cute. Then there's a "Dog chapel" where people have posted photos and comments to memorialize their furry friends who have left them. Then there's 10 miles of hiking trails, a dog lagoon and a ... read more

Sunday: Copper and I started our time in Vermont with a hefty hike to the top of Mt Ludlow- about 2k of elevation in 3 miles. The trail itself was scenic but the entire hike up was shaded and you did not get any views until you were basically at the top. You could feel you kept climbing and climbing and could see where you were, but there were never breaks in the trees to verify how far you had really come. The views at the top of course were spectacular. What I didn't get a picture of was an additional firetower I climbed to get the true 360 views and gets you above the trees. Copper climbed up to the top of the tower, but then got scared and got carried down until the last ... read more

North America » United States » Vermont » Burlington July 13th 2021

https://www.heygo.com/aaronandpatrick Burlington was chartered in 1763 and named for the Burling family, who were pioneer landowners. Settlement began in 1773 with the opening of a sawmill and shipbuilding business. Burlington was a military post, and during the war of 1812. Battery Park was the site of several engagements between land batteries and British warships on the lake. In the mid-20th century the city’s economy changed from one based on manufacturing to one dependent on service industries, including tourism. Manufactures include aircraft armaments, concrete products, food service equipment, snowboards, plastic monofilaments, and maple syrup. From a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, to far-off places with names we sometimes mispronounce, the journey that be... read more

Yes, there is a Woodstock VT, and its a beautiful little town along the Ottoqueechee River. Arrived there late in the afternoon, to a motel all set up for Covid reception. No touch, no talk. Just fill in the form in the room with Covid related queries. Somehow I lucked out, and was given a corner room with a huge view over the river as it came round a bend and into town. Just sat there worn out from the ride staring at the view, the leaves changing... Then went out and had a great meal at a local restaurant. The route North from Readsboro ranges from East to West across this rather narrow section of the state, winding through the Green Mountain National Forest looking for the scenic and non-developed countryside. Big towns like Bennington ... read more
