The Windows Loop and Windows Primitive Trail is a short loop that goes around the Windows formations in Arches National Park in southeast Utah. The Windows Section is a popular stop and is a place with wide views a number of large arches in compact area. Going counter clockwise, the first part of the trail goes behind the South Window. The Primitive Trail is not lined with easy steps like the main Windows Trail. Continuing around there are views of "The Spectacles" from behind. This view is lacking the large nose like formation that you see well from Turret Arch. There are more than 2000 arches inside the park, a surprising number at first, but they are counting a lot of small ones. Keeping an eye out there appears to be a small one high above ... read more

It’s Wednesday afternoon and soon we’ll be setting up for our 4th and final night photographing star trails here at Arches NP. We have been blessed with spectacular weather to do the star trails (exposures of 25 to 40 minutes). Last night and this morning were the coldest temps and we stayed out until around 11:30 pm, photographing three different formations. It is incredible to find a place to lie down and look straight up into the night sky away from most city lights. Each night we have seen several shooting stars. Hope you enjoy a few more images from one of our beautiful National Parks. We are so blessed to have so many areas across the fruited plains preserved for us to enjoy. ... read more

Halfway through day 3 of the workshop. Staying out at Arches until 10 pm makes for short nights. At least we aren't leaving an hour or more before sunrise! Still it's full days and I'm a little sleep deprived. But it's a good tired and I'm learning a lot. Here are a few images from Monday night and Tuesday. A brief nap should give me some added energy for our evening shoot.... read more

Just a very quick update with a few images from this morning. We departed Moab at 7 am and found good light to shoot until 11 am or so. Came back for a bite of lunch and we'll head back out for our late afternoon 'golden light', sunset, and more star trails. Thought I'd upload a couple of images I quickly worked on from the shoot this morning. I did a good number of shots bracketing exposures to work on some HDR. Hope they will turn out well. Don't know when I'll get to work on that. Thanks for the comments you've been sending. If I haven't sent a reply back, I will as I find a few spare moments. Right now a nap is the order of the hour! Enjoy. Bruce... read more

After three days in Moab, I've finally been to Arches National Park! I'll be spending a lot of time there in the next few days but decided to take a leisurely drive through the park this afternoon. Except for the short but uphill hike to view Delicate Arch (I'll hike to it later I'm sure) it was a pretty easy day. I actually slept in and did a few things around the RV before strolling through downtown Moab on my way to Arches. Once again, I'll just post a few images with some comments there. Thanks for checking in.... read more

This is an update for Oct 14, 2008 (Monday) We awoke early today because we had two areas to cover. We spent the first half of the day in Arches National Park just north of Moab, Ut. This park has over 700 arches, most of which are reached by long hikes. We chose the hike that was described as the best in the travel guides. The first hike was over a very difficult trail. At some points we walked along partitions that were only a few feet wide with drops of several hundred feet. ... read more

From Colorado Springs, my wife and I took around 6 and a half hours to get to the entrance gate of Arches National Park. We left around 8:00 am and at around 2:15 pm we were paying our park entrance fees. I wanted to get to the Visitor Center so I can get a reservation for a ranger guided tour of the Fiery Furnace. You can not do this online. Also, I wanted to get to see Delicate Arch at sunset. They say this is the best time of the day to enjoy this natural wonder. So we got our park tickets and headed for Moab to check into our motel about five miles from the park entrance. No problem. We changed into our hiking gear because the brochure said that it's moderate to strenous 3 ... read more

We drove from Nevada to Moab, Utah. We were not going to let the Jeep issue ruin our day!!!!! Moab...........Hummmmmmmmmmmmm.....I can see some off-road jeeping in the near future. We drove through the Bonneville Salt Flats (really cool), and the scenery began to change again. We found a really nice campground on the Colorado River and stayed for two days. Arches National Park was beautiful and not crowded. We drove to Courthouse Towers, Fiery Furnace and Devils Garden then we hiked the Windows section. We learned that one of the large arches had fallen a few days prior, so some sections of the park were closed to the public. We talked to the Ranger about the off road jeep trails and on her recommendation we took a trail from Arches National Park to Canyonlands National Park. ... read more
