Monday morning, May 20th, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. When we checked in last night at the hotel, I asked the check-in clerk what things we might see or do here before driving to Memphis. She confirmed that the movie "Gone Girl" was filmed here and that there was a route to see some of the filming sites. I also asked about Rush Limbaugh, since I knew this was his hometown. She quickly asked, "Are you a big conservative?" A little surprised, I answered yes. Then she told me that she attended Hillsdale College, a private university in Michigan. I told her that I had completed many of the Hillsdale College on-line classes. It is a small college but one of the best schools in the USA for study of the Constitution and American history. The hotel ... read more

I know, I'm serious late on blogging, our little visit to Memphis is actually a full month late! You are going to laugh, we have already left the States, I've seen whales underwater on scuba diving this week-end, and I'm writing this between two meetings in Congo! It's a small world, one in which I'm really busy lately! We did the long five hours drive from New Orleans to Memphis. This implied for us crossing the all length of Mississippi from South to North. We stay mainly on the Interstate, beside a short stop to lunch in the middle. Well, I can say that from this short experience, Mississippi has a lot of trees! This is mainly what we saw on the road. You come to Memphis for Elvis or for Martin Luther King. I know, ... read more

We started off with a authentic southern breakfast at Nashville Biscuit house. The Biscuits and Sausage gravy were tasty as expected. Jamie even got to try some grits and country gravy although the boujee Jamie was not into either. We had way too much to eat once again on our vacation. Then it was off to Memphis. We had some time to kill before stopping for the reason we were visiting Memphis (more food) so we instead went to the biggest bass pro shop I have ever seen that is housed in a giant pyramid. Mike purchased a very high class trucker hat and we got moon pie's. Was a good way to waste 90 min or so as our bellies made space. Then we are off to Central BBQ for the Memphis specialty. We had ... read more

Lots of good pictures at the end of this one - scroll on after you read. On our walk around the Fulton campground the night before we left, Kim and I spoke to a man whose license plate was DINGOUT. Guess what he does? He and his wife travel around the country following the severe hail storms, repairing dings in automobiles, RVs, etc. We told him about Elvis’ birthplace, he told us about Sun Records. Broke camp early (for us, anyway) and were on the road by 9:30. Only about 100 mile trip from Fulton MS to Memphis TN. Seen along the road near Memphis was an ad for FOSTERS AUTO BODY in RED BANKS. I lived on Foster Street in Red Bank, NJ. That was an omen; I’m still trying to figure out for what, ... read more

Chickasaw State Park, Tennessee I mentioned in a previous post that there were four kinds of driving on one of our road trips and that, at that point, we were doing all of the first kind, 'Are We There Yet' travel. Most frequently on Interstates, that is the kind of travel where you just want to get there as fast and safely as possible. Our goal is to travel as many miles as we can in a day (about 300), maybe stop for a nice lunch somewhere, but mostly just get to where we want to be. Yesterday morning was 'Are We There Yet' travel. We got back on I40 and drove another two-hundred miles east to Memphis, Tennessee. The terrain in eastern Arkansas was pretty much like that in western Arkansas, rolling hills, lots of ... read more

Geo: 35.1496, -90.0489Well today I woke up early (6:15) even after not going to sleep until after 1:30.  So I guess I was excited and eager to get the day started.  Getting up in the morning is usually not easy for me so I was a little shocked when I woke up so easily.  Had a nice leisurely breakfast and then made a quick trip to drug store.  Can't remember everything right?Suitcase all packed and ready to go and even under 50 pounds.  Kristi has left for her run and we need to finish the last minute things. Will update when we get to the airport. Arrived at airport when they requested but that was way to early., so we waited. Boarding went smoothly and actually left gate 10 minutes early and then we taxied and ... read more

The first leg of my holiday road trip is over! Those who know me know that I go to many college football games, especially those associated with schools I attend or have attended. It was a rare treat that my first two universities from the FBS of college football played each other - basically two bowl games for the price of one. I am speaking, of course, of the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The University of Georgia played Texas Christian University today at 11 AM central time. I graduated from UGA in 2011 and TCU in 2016, and I will admit that most of my sympathies were with the one that I have a longer relationship with. But that didn't mean I was only going to support them. It was an odd experience for someone who ... read more

Geo: 35.1516, -90.0499Boring steam-boating day yesterday, with overcast and chilly weather and effectively no wi-fi.Sadly, overall the cruise was slightly disappointing. The novelty, entertainers, food and accommodations were good. The service was inconsistent, the wi-fi woeful, and the poor organisation in the dining room forced us to eat more often at the casual upstairs buffet than we would have liked. The shore excursion experiences were also too variable. A very good day in Memphis though! Terrific three hrs at Graceland, trolley ride to the National Civil Rights Museum, The Peabody's ducks, then a great Rock 'n Roll dinner at BB King's Blues Club on Beale St. Best time we've had so far, see pics for more detail.... read more

The RV park that I stayed in was right behind Heartbreak Hotel and it was the last week that the hotel was open as they had built a big new hotel across the street called the Guest House. It was just a short walk over to the beginning of Graceland where you get tickets and set up for a tour time of the house. They give everyone a tablet and headphones that narrate the house tour which gives lots of information on Elvis and his life and career. All the exhibits were very interesting especially the automobile museum and the Tupelo exhibit which gave information on Elvis' early life in Mississippi. You can even get a peanut butter and banana sandwich in the café which was Elvis' signature sandwich. The National Civil Rights Museum at the ... read more
