hello friends, i have missed you . here i am on Hilton Head. the island is named after a Captain, William Hilton, and in 1663 when he saw the headland he named it after his head! what a big head:) libraries are a place of refuge. and they are free except when they are not which is the case today when you want to use the internet. i sacrificed two dollars to talk to you today! what a big head:) driving is tiring and sleeping in your car and being woken up in the middle of the night at the rest stop by a couple wanting more of my money (i guess it is theirs too:)) is even more tiring. but, butt both kinds of but(t)s you will find at the beach i will walk the ... read more

Hello everyone! Welcome to the final installment of The Adventures of John Jo, indeed, tis true, I am heading home tomorrow. Booo hooooo. No time for sorrow though, I have to be thankful that I have had such a good year and even I understand that all things come to an end. I also appreciate how lucky I have been to have had the opportunity to spend so much time travelling around, most people never get this chance, this is a fact that has never been far from my mind. My last couple of weeks have been spent in the good old U.S. of A, visiting my Uncle and Aunt. I had always planned to visit them, but I needed to see how the year progressed before making a final decision. My last few weeks are ... read more

06-11-10 I burned a vacation day at work so I could head out for a two day adventure down the coast of South Carolina and over into Georgia. I headed out a little after eight in the morning for a small town I had noticed on my GPS but did not show up on any of my paper maps. I had noticed it on a quick trip over to St. Matthews just a few weeks earlier. The town was Singleton and was located just a few miles down the road from Fort Motte on Hwy. 601. I tried several small roads hoping to get me to this little town, but none of them ever took me to the correct location. On the third try I turned down a little dirt road just past some railroad tracks ... read more

November 17, 2009 Tuesday Tried to sleep in at BCV, but bed not very comfortable, altho I liked the room overall. Housekeeping knocked on the door at about 8:30, altho checkout isn’t until 11. I was just barely up -- had been trying to doze. Fixed coffee and microwave burrito, chili, cheese, gooey thing that is actually better than it sounds for breakfast. Bought a Disney Vacation Club Member t-shirt for $19.95 in the shop -- may have been the cheapest shirt I saw on property -- they didn’t check if I was actually a member. Didn’t get on the road until about 10:30. Following the signs to I-4 is not the shortest way to get there -- should have gone via Downtown Disney. Had forgotten that I meant to go to the Morse Museum on ... read more

November 4, 5 and 6, 2009 You’ll have to forgive the Bloggers for their lack of communication over the past several days…but we’ve been sooooo busy. “Busy doing what” you might ask. Well this is the grueling schedule we (by “we” I mean me) have had… 9am: Slowly rise from the Westin Heavenly bed and amble over to the deck off of our room and step out. Sit and gaze at the majestic ocean as the waves roll onto the shore…perhaps read a chapter or two and then get dressed. By 9:30 there is a gentle tap on our door and it is Donna and John calling me to breakfast. (I should say at this point that Bill has been up for hours checking out sun rise and giving a few tips to the workers ... read more

The Beach...

November 1, 2009 What a wonderful day! We ate breakfast here at the Westin and then headed for the beach…It was sunny and about 75-80 degrees! The beach was beautiful. Marie, Donna and I sat for several hours reading (my idea of heaven!) and then went up to the pool area and had a swim up there…also we were trying to bother John who was sun bathing and reading…probably preparing another bird lecture! The sun here is HOT even when the temperature is not. After a dip in one of the 3 pools and a little duck into the Jacuzzi, we sat pool side and had a light lunch…I’m not kidding this place is like paradise!! After lunch it was back to the beach which is magnificent at that time of day. Last night was day ... read more

November 2, 2009 “Look underneath the hot dog” Another wonderful day! Today the weather was somewhat cool and cloudy. After a quick trip into town to buy more reading material for the beach, Marie, Donna and I sat by the pool and “read”. By “read”, I mean talked about…oh just about anything…talk, talk, talk! For example: There were several people sitting around the pool eating onion rings who really would have been better served in the gym…you know…that kind of “reading”! Now here’s the interesting part. On one of the hotel decks there is a seating area with comfy chairs and a fire ring. We have been eyeing it since we arrived but there are always other guests at it. Sometimes they say, “Sit down with us” but we don’t want to…we want it all to ... read more
