I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone At night I could hear the blood in my veins Black and whispering as the rain On the streets of Philadelphia Moving words from Bruce Springsteen. We certainly walked the avenue! Natalie gave us an early morning ride into the city so our first port of call was for caffeine to keep us going!! Then we went out to Penn's Landing to get a view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge which was shrouded in mist. Nearby we studied the monument to Irish immigration. Next up we found ourselves in Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continually occupied street in the USA, or so they say. It was very nice there. The museum was closed though, we were just too ... read more

Today, Jerome and I left Washington D.C. early (about 10:45) en route to New York City. We took I-95 all the way. On the way I decided to stop in Philadelphia and spend the afternoon. It was a good choice. I walked around the historic neighborhoods downtown, seeing the Liberty Bell, Carpenter's Hall, and Independence Hall. Next to Independence Hall was the building where our first Congress met from 1790-1800, before Washington became the capitol. In there, I saw the old House room and the Old Senate room, which was on the second floor. I took a tour of Independence Hall and saw the room where they signed the Declaration of Independence and where the Constitutional Convention met. (By the way, all of these historic visits were nothing like National Treasure.) We then a cheesesteak at ... read more

Hi, Everybody Today we went to Hershey, PA and toured the chocolate factory and got a free sample of chocolate which ended up being a mini Hershey bar. We took lots of pictures and as you can see we bought a lot of candy. Did you know that there streets are the color of chocolate and the street light are Hershey Kisses, the dirt even looks like chocolate, what a place. From Hershey we drove to Philadelphia, you have no idea how hard it was to navigate around the city streets. As we made our way around the city we watched the people in the long boats in the river, that was awesome sight. We made it an early night as they had no internet service for us to work with. Had to wait in the LONGEST customer service line EVER…..then gave up and went to the ticket counter…. 3. Waited about 2 hours for assistance….was told we would fly out on Tuesday, however had to wait 30 minutes for confirmations… 4. (2 hours later) JUST KIDDING!!!! We’re leaving on Saturday…………another 2 hours later we finally got pink “Hotel Vouchers,” aka a pink piece of paper with a phone number to possibly find a hotel….grand total of 6 hours waiting on the hard tile floor without food 5. We go ... read more

A good-bye to NYC and on to the next adventure -- we headed to Penn Station to catch Amtrak to Philadelphia and DC. Everyone had a snooze as the train gently rocked us to sleep. The baggage checker in the 30th St. Station in Philadelphia was so nice in only charging us $3.00 per person for our luggage (we had a lot to check!) We gave her a can of salmon as a special thank you. Then there was a different metro to the City Center to visit Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin's home site and Betsy Ross's house. The day was mildly warm and pleasant. And surprisingly the tourist sights were empty! It was interesting to have seen where Washington took his first oath of office, then to see where it all began ... read more

I left Rio for New York's JFK, and got through customs fast enough that I thought I could probably catch an earlier Boltbus from Penn Station to Philadelphia's 30th Street station than the one I'd booked, ut I ended up spending quite a while helping a Brazilian woman with limited English skills figure out how to use the AirTrain and New York subway. I spoke to her (and an MTA janitor) in Spanish, and managed to get her headed in the right direction and with the right Metrocard, just in time to catch the LIRR to Penn Station from Jamaica Station, except the doors on the train were closed a couple of minutes early, even though the train was just sitting there. So, I was a few minutes too late for the earlier bus. No matter, ... read more
