I am a teacher traveling with students to NY, Philadelphia and Washington DC. This is our way of sharing our trip with family and friends.

A good-bye to NYC and on to the next adventure -- we headed to Penn Station to catch Amtrak to Philadelphia and DC. Everyone had a snooze as the train gently rocked us to sleep. The baggage checker in the 30th St. Station in Philadelphia was so nice in only charging us $3.00 per person for our luggage (we had a lot to check!) We gave her a can of salmon as a special thank you. Then there was a different metro to the City Center to visit Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin's home site and Betsy Ross's house. The day was mildly warm and pleasant. And surprisingly the tourist sights were empty! It was interesting to have seen where Washington took his first oath of office, then to see where it all began ... read more

Slept in for a little bit.... til 8:30.... A stroll through Central Park, dodging a road race that involved 6,000 runners. WOW. Interesting trying to cross the street for sure. The day was lovely though. We had an hour and a half at the MET, the museum to see if you have to choose one in NY. I suggested kids take in the Temple of Dendor and then pick a section of the museum to explore. We sat on the steps of the museum to listen to some great acapella singing by 3 street performers. Hot dogs for lunch and another stroll in the park. We had our picture at the Alice in Wonderland statue. We couldn't find Balto on this trip or the carousel. :( Took cabs to midtown for our "Lion King" matinee. A ... read more

Everyone is tired! Lots of walking yesterday!!! Destination today was Rockefeller Center with all its glitz. Believe it or not, there is still ice skating at the rink! Off to NBC studios, then the Sony Wonder Lab. (We all decided to nix the Sony visit for next year). We got to see the Saturday Night Live set and several studios that the network uses for their productions. It's interesting to see how much of what we think is "real" on the TV is totally fabricated by the media. None of what we saw on one sports set was real. Had lunch on the run and had a walk down 5th Ave. St. Patrick's Cathedral was in the middle of a Good Friday mass -- very full. The music was stunning as we sat in the pews ... read more

Today was our Wall Street day. We arrived in lower Manhattan and met up at the NYSE. It was a short wait to get into the Exchange and then everyone had to be ID'ed and photographed. LOTS of security post 911! We had an interesting introduction to the stock market. Many of the students shared their Economics experience with their virtual stocks. My uncle was interested in how each student was doing with their market shares and counseled them to stick with products they know. On to a quick visit to Trinity Church and then lunch at Delmonico's -- which prides itself in being the first "restaurant" in the country. A crowded ride on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Beautiful day! Sunny and warm. Lady Liberty was equally beautiful. Students endured 2 security checks ... read more

Landed in NYC So we had an uneventful flight to Newark -- actually arrived 1/2 hour early. Then had the "experience" of a 45 min traffic jam at the Lincoln Tunnel. Got to the Youth Hostel just fine and quickly headed out. We visited my father's apt. first as he lives around the corner from here. Up to the 11th floor to say hello and throw paper airplanes out the window. (This is what Matthew does every visit to granpa's.) :) Then down to Grand Central Station to view probably one of the most beautiful train stations. A short walk to the Empire State Building and a VERY LONG line for the elevator. The kids were good sports, but it was about as much as they could stand. Next, they negotiated a stretch limo ride outside ... read more

Last night was the final meeting before we leave. We've had 6 months of fundraising totaling nearly $15,000.00! A busy schedule is planned and hopefully all 14 students are looking forward to our trip. Stay tuned for updates!... read more
