Wednesday, 10 June (Philadelphia Day 1): Since it had stopped raining during the night and the forecast called for possible light showers in the late afternoon, we decided to spend the day in Philadelphia. After my 6:30am run to the distant Landhome Foods store for coffee, we drove to the nearest train station at Thorndale. It was probably only 10 or 15 miles away, but on narrow, winding roads. We parked our car in the “daily use” lost, paid the four quarters (no bills please!), and hopped aboard the train to Philadelphia’s Market Street Station near the Independence Hall Visitors Center. The round trip cost $12 each, but you can save a couple of dollars if you buy the ticket ahead of time… somewhere. The train took about an hour and a half, since it stopped ... read more

CS: Mon 16 March: Having read a good deal about that part of American history that deals with the War of Independence and the Civil War, prior to our arrival, we were looking forward to our next port. At 6am it was still dark as we approached our first mooring, the day brought weather that was fairly bright but overcast, with showers later and maximum temperate around 60F. We are scheduled to stay here all day unloading the heavy ship’s engine then leave around midnight to go the rest of the way up the Delaware River to Tioga. We are not permitted to go ashore from here for reasons that have not been explained. We are just inside the junction between Delaware River and Schuylkill River at Anker Ship Yard opposite Fort Mifflin. This is ... read more

CS: Thursday 12th March 2009: We slipped our mooring around 7.30pm on Monday 9th (yes darkness again) and negotiated the river under two bridges then under a 3rd bridge into Galveston Bay. Next morning we were abeam Louisiana and heading to Florida Keys. The weather is bright and sunny, the Gulf of Mexico showing some white caps but generally calm and our motion is steady. The weather continues fine with strong sun and blue skies. We are in the Atlantic by Thursday and the sea is still very quiet. We are making good time as our Captain likes but we cannot benefit from getting there earlier. Over night conditions changed and we rolled quite a bit and it rained heavily. By Friday we are closing on Chesapeake Bay but the Captain is zig-zagging to kill time. ... read more

On Wednesday morning I packed all of my things back into my suitcase. I was hoping that I would be able to just take my extra carry-bag with my things in but I just have too much stuff that I want to keep with me. It is going to be a huge pain trying to lug a suitcase around but maybe when I have offloaded some things I will be able to pick up a smaller suitcase or at the very least mine won’t be so heavy! I then headed to 34th St. to look at the Macy*s sale. Mania. It was not as bad as I had anticipated but the staff seemed much ruder than the other shoppers. I bought a shirt and top for $16 (yes that is only included to reassure my parents ... read more

PHILADELPHIA ESCAPADE I've been in NJ for more than a week. My cousin and i decided to go on a road trip. we borrowed my sister's car drove to Philadelphia because it's just a 20 minutes drive =) The air is not as chilly compared the previous days. Since it is already the world series and we are a fan of the PHILLIES, we decided to see the Citizen's Bank park. we are lucky enough to see the stadium the day before the big event. Reporters are already preparing for the tent to cover the event. after some photo shoots, we went to the Constitution center and the Liberty bell. As we cross the street, we did'nt noticed that the green sign is on so we we're being shouted by one local "dirt bag" and we ... read more

Dollywood - Pigeon Forge was like a little Vegas, bright lights, souvenir shops and mini golf (where once again Claire reigned supreme) We spent a day and a half in Dollywood itself mostly listening to numerous country and bluegrass bands sing endless renditions of 'Rockytop', which Ron now sings at any opportunity (he knows all the words). Park highlights included a visit to Dolly's childhood home and museum and a ride on the Dollywood steam train. From Tenessee we headed into Virginia where we camped up for two nights in Shenandoah national park. We enjoyed a scenic hike and Ron tried to teach me how to play American football, I can now throw the ball like a pro (most of the time). Whilst eating our campfire fare a black bear came wandering through the campsite, very ... read more

My time in Philadelphia is at an end. My cubicle is cleaned out, I presented my 7 weeks worth of work to my boss, recycled a ton of papers, and said goodbye to my coworkers. It was a good learning experience, and I made some friends that I hope to keep in touch with. Yesterday I made the decision to have a day out in Philly instead of spending it in my cube. The other interns were out in the field, so I took the train in and had a "culture" day. I took a bus out of suburban station and went to the Philadelphia Art Museum...the one with the famous "Rocky" steps. I spent the morning getting lost in gallery after gallery, seeing some of my favorite artist's paintings (ie: Renior) and trying my best ... read more

Today I checked another item off of my list of things to experience: sushi! I went out for lunch with one of the other EPA interns, my friend Mia. We hiked across Philly to go out for real sushi, but our intended lunch spot was closed. We finally found another place...a tiny sushi bar that was actually run by the owner. This place only seated 8, so we had to wait for our turn at the bar. Mia, my sushi guide, ordered us a great assortment so that I could taste bunch of stuff. Raw fish. Hummm...after ordering we realized that I have never had this, so would I even like it? Good question! Well, this was a jump-in-with-both-feet experience, so I was going in hoping the best. The sushi was prepared right in front of ... read more

My apartment is empty. The moving truck is packed. I can't describe how strange it is to be leaving, and not knowing when I will be coming back. It's been a crazy ride in 'the city that loves you back'. Much LOVE (with a tilted O) ... read more
