July 23d- Ahh Portland. Driving up highway 101 with the twists, curves and coastal climbs was Generalissimo's dream come true. But if you had to drive a windy road, you'd want a member of Team Rambo/Generalissimo at the wheel. Texas Red and J. Karankawa felt like they were kidnapped by Speed Racer. Only Speed Racer's I-pod was full of Iron and Wine, Pixies, M. Ward, Patsy Cline, George Jones and Neutral Milk Hotel. Portland is a town that believes in yielding to pedestrians and bicycles--a big city that believes in keeping it small town. Restaurants had veggie friendly options, many boasted local produce, free-range meat for the carnivores, and organic veggies for the veggie. Portland is the mecca for microbreweries and one favorite of the trio was the all-organic Roots. Mmmm...beer. There was even a Beer ... read more

Greetings from Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Cascade Falls, Oregon! I am writing this blog while "fancy camping" in a KOA campground sitting at the picnic table while Phil is building a fire. This is our 14th state in 13 days! We got up from our campsight this morning to take a look around. We had no idea what it looked like since we got in so late last night. Not too bad. Nice sights, not crowded but with antiquated hookups! A quick shower in the RV and we were on to Mt St Helen's National Monument. Up and up another mountain. We are so impressed with this RV. She just keeps on keepin on-up mountains and down mountains! Mt St Helen's was just amazing. I know I keep saying that but what an ... read more

Hola a todos You have found my blog! And its first entry, which (to the disappointment of all I'm sure) is merely a test. So please, don't expect any exquisitely-structured descriptions of fine Argentine beef and whatever else might be considered FINE down there (not down under). So, if you hate to read a lot of parenthetical side thoughts, then my blog probably isn't for you (ha sucker). At this point, the only things I want to know are: is this a reputable blog site? And can my writing be selected for a Pulitzer? Stay tuned for a possible late night entry tonight when my neurons are firing at far different frequencies. Hope everyone out there in the world is fantastic! ciao ... read more

'Are you happy?' This was the very first question asked to me by a stranger in the beautiful town of Portland Oregon. Confused and slightly amused with it, I answer in a soft tone, 'yes.' He then got a little too close for comfort, pointed a finger in my face and said, "Well fuck you! Cuz you're gonna get yer ass whooped harder than ever before!" Then, just kept on his way with his little dog. It took almost all of being to not laugh in this guys face, but regardless I thought it was an interesting first interaction with a local. After he stormed off, another businessy lookin' fella assured me that that guy wouldn't have laid a finger on me. I thought that was cute. Well needless to say, our luck on finding good ... read more

First of all, HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY AARON!! YOU ARE AN OLD MAN!! HAHA. We stopped in Portland due to the advice of our friend Sam back at home. I think things have changed since she visited a couple of years ago. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely city - one of the few places we’ve visited where sporadic green parks and places of solitude actually work, and scores of anti-chain bookstores and coffee shops to keep the likes of us entertained for a few days. It also contains the beautiful Japanese Gardens up on Washington Hill, with beautiful views overlooking downtown Portland and Mt Hood in the distance. The areas of Hawthorne and Belltown were a delight to stroll through; wandering aimlessly by the quaint shops and obscure thrift stores was reminiscent of King St ... read more

Close your eyes, and imagine this. You navigate through the early morning traffic of a small city with tree-lined boulevards, seeing remnants of dawn’s misty fogs roll over the snow-capped mountain ahead, juxtaposed against a foreground of a small handful of medium-sized skyscrapers. Leaving the city’s boundaries, within minutes you are gliding smoothly along the highway, windows rolled down and breathing in the cleanest air you’ve tasted in months. Around the bend you notice on your right a large waterfall cascading down a jagged clifftop, its watery forces cutting through lush thick vegetation and dense slate rock. You notice the deep green pine trees and tall, proud fir trees dotting the slopes as you pull up closer, the sand and gravel crushing beneath your shoes as you walk in for a closer look. The falls powerfully ... read more

Ann and I embarked on our 10-day loop tour of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon on Friday, June 26. We visited the Okanagan Valley to enjoy some wine tasting and purchased more than we were supposed to for our later US border crossing. We continued on to Nelson where they were holding an after work festival in honour of our arrival. We stayed at a fantastic B&B called the Cloudside Inn, which was run by two travel- and photo-savvy owners. The next day, we attended Erin and Kris’ wedding. Erin and I went to UBC together over a decade ago. And that night we partied with old and new friends alike. We managed to get an early start the next morning and covered a lot of ground, following the Columbia River canyon, stopping in at Hunters ... read more

"Home is not where you live, but where they understand you" (Christian Morganstern) Once again our room is filled with piles of boxes and sorted objects with the distinctions of 'going' or 'staying' as we prepare to leave shortly. The day is set or at least as much as we can possibly set where we'll jump back into our truck and began our hot spring journey back to Colorado. The bowl of fresh garden snow peas sitting besides my computer reminds me that time has been well spent back here in Oregon. In most cases it has been a rare treat to return to our home area where we were both raised. Albeit we've found we can't name a road for the life of us. Directions around these parts come from the memories where other folk ... read more

Alright, the sadness is officially setting in. My sister, being completely dramatic (I don't know if we're really related:P) has kept saying "this is our last picture for a year! this is our last hug!", etc, etc. Amelia told me today she doesn't want me gone for a year, that she doesn't even want me gone for a day and that when we come back from China we have to move in next door so she can spend the night with us whenever she wants. I told her I have to give her 365 days worth of kisses, and she agreed. We just spent Thursday-Saturday evening in Corvallis, Oregon. It was only our home for slightly over a year, but somehow it felt like ages. We made some amazing friends there, and I'm very glad we've ... read more

We had so much fun taking the kids to Crater Lake, Oregon and we have decided that we are going to make this a yearly trip. There is so much to do and it is very relaxing. We got a late start yesterday. Jon did not get home until 4:15 and we got out the door at 4:30 om. I had everything all packed and ready to go and we were all very impatient to get there and were very glad when he got home. I had finished all laundry, cleaned the entire house from top to bottom, weeded, cleaned the fridge and mowed the lawn. I was so ambitious that I got up at 5:30 am so I got a LOT done. It was a nice feeling leaving knowing that when we came home the ... read more
