July 4th 2009 I can certainly say we picked the wrong day to visit Cannon Beach. It was the July 4th long weekend, my sister was in town and my parents were leaving in a week and it was 85F in Portland so we thought what the heck and set out. We dressed like one would when you head to the beach on a sunny day. Who the heck knew that Cannon Beach, a mere 1 and a half hours away would have totally different weather conditions and I had to check the wind directions. It was chilly and windy and very very cold So much for V’s tent and Frisbee. We did not do justice to the visit. Next time around, I will check the weather and also plan the visit better so we can ... read more

The departure date for Alaska is coming very soon! Sunday to be exact, at least that is what we are hoping for. Derek is on his way out right now; he should be here tomorrow. Saturday will be spent doing final preparations on our bikes. We will put new tires on Derek's bike, and make any final adjustments necessary. I am not sure how much I will be able to update this blog while we are gone, but I will do what I can. Derek is bringing a small laptop computer with him, but I'd rather not spend all my free time blogging. I plan on doing a video blog, and will be bringing my camcorder to do daily recordings. I plan on putting up that video when we get home. For anyone interested, here is ... read more

After a restful two nights and a bike fitting and tune-up in Portland, we continued our trek southward. Portland did include a trip to the Rogue Brewery, but no beers are worthy of mention. We left Washington with a sense of excitement as we had cycled the entire route and were beginning to really feel comfortable on our bikes. Oregon, however, proved to challenge us in a way that we had not really expected. The Oregon coast is littered with amazing ocean views scattered with jetting pillars of rock. In cycling terms, this equates to, at best, rolling hills and on the 'fun' days, peaks with minimal shoulder, stronger wind than should be allowed by the Gods, and our first experience with fog and its ability to completely encompass an area/cyclist. The temperatures were somehow colder ... read more

Had a relaxing day today. Slept in, got my oil changed, and headed South about 7 miles to Cannon Beach. Grabbed lunch and walked around the shops for a bit. Headed to the beach and read a book for about three hours. Doing laundry now and will be getting dinner sometime soon. Tomorrow, I'm on to Mt. St. Helen's and Seattle.... read more

CHAPTER 24-- TRAVELS WITH CALI-OREGON May 27: “Oregon or bust!” I think that was a slogan that was written on covered wagons. Anyway, Cali and I are finally in Oregon. We followed the Smith River most of the way up to Grants Pass. As I said in the last chapter, it is a beautiful river, so I am enclosing another picture of it. I also saw my first snow covered mountain in Oregon, but I don’t know its name. Near Cave Junction, I didn't visit the caves, but instead stopped at a place advertising big cats. Naturally I had to see what that was all about. A woman gave a group of us a tour of many cages with a wide variety of wild cats, including lions, cougars, bobcats, jaguars, leopards, tigers and some other cats ... read more

27th June 2009 This is definitely one spot that is widely advertised as one of the must sees for people in Portland, OR. Multnomah Falls is the second-tallest year-round waterfall in the nation. One of the things I definitely love about living here is you barely have to drive 10 mins and you are surrounded by natural beauty every side. The coast is less than 2 hrs away and the desert is less than 4, I can’t really ask for more. We moved here in Aug 2008 but having a baby put a stop on travel for a while. This trip to the falls was so my parents could see a bit more than the 4 walls of our home. Also exposing V to small trips to see how he and I did The drive ... read more

Oregon is awesome! It smells like camping and donuts! Okay, it doesn't really smell like donuts, but Portland has one of the most unusual donut shops I have every visited--VooDoo Doughnuts. They have some unique flavors there, in fact I tried one encrusted with Oreos and drizzled with peanut butter. Yum! You can even get married there! Check it out yourself: http://voodoodoughnut.com/ I had a great time exploring the winding roads and some amazing scenery, traversing almost 400 miles with my rental car in one day! I ventured east to see Multnomah Falls, the second tallest year round waterfall and to see some breathtaking views of Mt. Hood. I was fortunate to see the the peaks of Mt. Hood from both the sky and the ground. After my trek east, I headed west to the coast, ... read more

Meandered my way up the Oregon Coast today. Very pretty drive up US101. Stopped in Bandon on the way up and had some really good fish and chips. Also stopped at several lighthouses along the way. I don't know what it is about those things that I just love. Wish I would have had more time to explore some of the towns along the way becase a lot of them looked neat. It was a long drive, though, and the place that I'm staying (Seaside, OR) is a neat coastal town too. I went down to the main area on Broadway tonight to eat (Clam Chowder), and it looked like they had a lot of shops and reastaurants down that way. I plan on exploring it more tomorrow and maybe reading a book on the beach ... read more

Drove to Crater Lake today. Beautiful Blue lake in the top of a volcano cone. Believe it or not, about two thirds of the drive around the lake was closed because of snow, but what I was able to see was really cool. Going to take a leisurely drive up the Oregon coast tomorrow and will be spending the night and the next day in a hostel on the norther Oregon coast.... read more

Long drive on Thursday. Got pretty as I started heading north. Arrived at the hostel in the Redwoods in time to take a shower and watch the sunset on the beach across from the hostel. Woke up early on Friday and drove back south about twenty miles to the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Beautiful! The mist was enshrouding the grove, and the sun was shining through the trees. Drove up north about thirty miles to Crescent City after I walked through the grove. Stopped to take a picture of the lighthouse there. Drove about 10 miles northeast after that and stopped at the Reed-Simpson Grove. Walked the loop there and continued on northeast to the Stout Grove. Walked around there and headed into Oregon. Stopped at the Oregon Caves Monument and took the 90 minute walk ... read more
