Welcome to our blog! Phil and I hope that this format will be an easy way to share our experiences and pictures. On the 8th of this month we received word that our visas were finally approved! It only took a month and a half longer than expected.......... Now we are in the scramble to get everything done asap. We have already booked our flights, we leave Portland on the 29th and arrive in Singapore on the 31st (crossing the date line and a 17+ hour flight between LA and Singapore). Then we will spend several days in Singapore with Phil's parents and fly to Penang on the 3rd. Last Friday we shipped off all our stuff to Penang. Fortunately we will be staying in a fully furnished apartment so we didn't have to ship furniture. ... read more

I woke up early and called a cab to take me to the train station. I was catching the 7:30am train from Seattle to Portland! I had never travelled by train before. It was so much fun! I had 2 seats to myself so I passed the time by alternating between sleeping, watching out the window and reading. I even went to the dining car for a snack. The time passed quickly and I was soon in Portland. My friend Stephanie and her daughter Kimberly picked me up at the train station. I proposed to Steph that we go to Corvallis to see my other friend Kathryn and her new house. She agreed and we headed south. Kathryn's house is great and I am so glad I got to see it and where she has lived ... read more

It was Awesome to see Dave and I only had the morning and late evening to hang out but I am sure I will see him again soon. Dave also has been a friend I have seen in different places around the world, but mostly, Dave is my brother and has been a faithful friend in a way that no one else has. I hope God Blesses him ten times as much as he has for other people. How cool to get to see so many great friends on this trip too. Best of all, he makes me laugh a lot. But he ate all my Thai food on the way out of town. Portland is only a couple hours from Tacoma, maybe he will be around if I move here. If I keep the TravelBlog ... read more

Hello out there... I would have done this sooner, but my laptop power connection crapped out on me... ugh. So, when we are in Cheyenne I am sending it out to be serviced from the UPS store. We are visiting Jake's Aunt Nora and Uncle Mark. They have a son, Eric, who is six, so the girls are having a ball. We are staying the night at their house tonight. So, our trip started out slowly because Jake had forgotten to have our spare tire changed to the new size that we got put on. So, we drove up the highway to Tok through the night to attempt to get on schedule. We were on time when we left there. HOWEVER I did not account for the terrible frost heave conditions of the northern Yukon, so ... read more

So today is Cinco de Mayo in Portland, Or (and, I suppose, most other places in the world that celebrate this Mexican holiday). Portland has a "sister city"--Guadalajara! Having visited Guadalajara, Mexico, I was excited to learn that the wonderful dance troupe, Ballet Folklorico de Guadalajara are performing at the fiesta down on the waterfront. Yea for brightly colored dresses and sparkling smiles! Perhaps there is some salsa or flamenco in my near future.... Speaking of which, I'm so excited!!! I still need to buy the tickets, but it looks like I'll be able to go the Eistedfodd International Festival in Llangollen, Wales! If I make it there by the 7th (which I will), I could go to the evening concert--Flamenco Nights! Yea for swooshy skirts, pounding feet and beautiful serpent-like hands! By the way, the ... read more

Architecturally, this is the oldest and most intereresting part of Portland. Too many of the old buildings were pulled down in the 1940s and 50s to make way for such things as parking lots and overpasses, but a lot of the old cast-iron and brick buildings remain. This area used to be sketchy, especially at night, but most of the drug dealers and other ne'er do wells have moved to other parts of town. Now there are some nice little bars and art galleries. The Ash Street Saloon and Berbati's Pan are two of the better venues for live music. The Portland Saturday Market is held here on weekends. It's a little touristy but worth at least one visit if you're in town. Check out www.saturdaymarket.org for more info.... read more

This afternoon I ate a hamburger and some fries at McDonald's. I hadn't eaten there in months and it tasted really good. Then I rode to northwest Portland, first going through the Pearl District before heading to 23rd avenue. ... read more

Between the rainy weather and my bike's being in the shop for a tune up, I haven't done as much riding as I 'd like to lately. Here are some pictures from a ride I took last week during a break in the clouds. I didn't go far, just downtown, over to the inner east side, then back home.... read more

This is my first of what I hope will be many posts. I live in Portland and I see the city from a pedestrian and cyclist's eye view. There aren't many photos of Portland on this site so I thought I'd create a weblog to show some of the photos I take when I wander around the city. I'd like to focus on out of the way places, the sites the guidebooks and tourist maps overlook. Check out the gallery section to see a series of pictures I took on a recent bike ride to Sellwood. ... read more
