July 28, 2013 Another chance this Sunday to be able to watch our church service on ‘live streaming.’ That’s always great news when we can see it. After the service, we walked around the park for quite awhile and then got ready to go into Newport. Headed to Georgie’s for some great clam chowder and fresh albacore tuna salad. Maybe one that we saw being cleaned last night… lol Went into Newport and to the Marine Discovery Boat Tours and reserved a place on the boat for tomorrow – whale watching!! I hope we see some, the boat today didn’t see any. Praying for whales. We were content to sit on the dock there and just watch a silly sea lion and all the boats coming and going. One place along the docks had a machine ... read more

July 27, 2013 - Saturday Today we were a bit lazy in the morning and then at 1 pm we went over to the Hatfield Marine Science Center and watched the resident octopus being fed. Her name is Sashay and she’s fed only on Mon., Thurs., and Sat. She’s lovely and turns a deep shade of dark red when excited about her food coming. She’s fed fish and sometimes shrimp. And she eats it up quickly too. They octopus they have are only kept for about 5 months and then put back into the ocean. There are so few octopus that survive that they don’t want them to stay in the Center and not be able to reproduce. Of the approximately 100,000 babies born, only 1 or 2 survive! The female dies after her babies are ... read more

July 24-26, 2013 We needed to move the trailer to a different site today. When reservations were made they could only give us 4 days in a regular full hook up site, so off to the overflow we go. The overflow is dry camping – no electric, no water, no sewer. We’re able to handle that for several days, but this was for only one day and night, so not a big deal. We were in a site right along the river, beautiful. Right after we got there, here come the deer – wow, right up to us, apparently looking for food. After lunch we went into town and walked around a bit then went to the Slack. The is like a Pre-Rodeo event , more or less giving the rodeo participants a chance to hone ... read more

Reality is sinking in that we will be home in just a few days time. While I'm looking forward to seeing family and friends, I'm not looking forward to much else! Ian and I talked about what drives these feelings that we share, and we recalled Ewan MacGregor saying, in Long Way Around, that when you're on the bikes, all you have to think about is riding and you completely look forward to it. When you're not riding, all you have to think about is what you are going to eat and where you are going to sleep. Next day you're back riding again, and on goes the cycle. If only life at home was so simple and uncomplicated. I don't want to drag my feet getting home or double back on any of the trip, ... read more

Geo: 44.6323, -124.058Portland,Oregon is a nice city and we made several friends in a matter of minutes. Some strange some normal. Stayed out longer than planned but had a good time doing so.Now back in car and driving interstate 5 again towards yet another town called Salem (not the witch town, that's in New England) we will then head west and pick up the Pacific highway 101 to take in the sights as we head to LA.Chris is doing an excellent job at driving whilst I read and blog. Now on road to coast heading to Newport Oregon for some lunch. Seen signs for leaping deer and elk but no actual sightings of the real thing. Omg this car is so uncomfortable. It's like sitting on a park bench and my bum has gone numb.Lots of trees ... read more

Tomorrow we are off to Victoria to catch the Black Ball ferry to Port Angeles. We will then drive to Olympia , WA to get on US 5 which will take us to Newport on the coast. The next day we will start our cycling trip down the coast (about 212 miles) to Brookings which is just north of the California border. Lets hope the weather holds. Day one which was basically the ferry and car ride passed into history with not much to be happy about - large traffic and a long day. We arrived in Lincoln City and went for the $49 special room rate. The two of us decided to eat at the Dionysus Resturant across the street. The architect did an excellent job of designing an inspiring space, but the chef seemed ... read more

The trip from Florence to Newport is a measly 34 miles. Anywhere else in the world this would mean about a half hour drive; Oregon is like no other place. Between the long and winding road, bridges, tunnels, and waysides the trek was about two hours there and two hours back. Oregon does not get the same miles per hour other places get. The fog had already rolled out by the time I started north to Newport; the sunshine lit my way along the Pacific Ocean. Stopping to take pictures the sea gulls let me get within a couple of feet of them before hopping to lengthen the distance. The crows sat with gulls watching over the shore. Winter or not the greenery never ceases here, making for a beautiful late winter or early spring day. ... read more

Awoke to a beautiful day. It is so nice to not be on any time schedule. We took all day to travel 60 miles down the coast. We stopped at Pacific Beach which was outstanding. I cannot say enough about the beautiful beaches on this coastline. We would drive for about 15 minutes and feel like we had to stop again and again to take it all in. Breathtaking beaches. We picnicked on a bluff overlooking the beach, having the best view in town! After a long walk on the beach we made our way to our Yurt campsite at Beverly Beach State Park. It poured rain all night and the following day was gray and drizzly. The next morning we went into the town of Newport. We had passed through Newport 30 years ago on ... read more

Today is my single day in one of the more dramatic sections of Oregon, the coast. I had planned for it to be longer, but need some of the time to get my car fixed. The Oregon coast consists of Pacific surf crashing against volcanic rocks. Much of it resembles Queets Beach (see ) in the Olympics, including the lack of development. The Oregon Coast is unique in that most of it is protected by a series of state parks. They are the legacy of a far sighted governor in the early 1900s, Oswald West, who did much to ensure the preservation of the Oregon landscape. To get to the beaches, I have to drive through the coas... read more
